My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

Baddass mate.. any news, or a review about the Viewsonic VX922 19" LCD Monitor - Black/Silver (MO-046-VS) ???

there was a bit of info about it here at Behardware. It's just an extension of the VX912 / 924 using a more overdriven version of the AUO panel used in those models. Viewsonic have supposedly improved theiir ClearMotiv electronics too, making them version 2 now, but tbh i doubt much has changed since the VX924

Cheers for the linky! :)

Was kinda hoping they'd listen to the consumers and make it a true 16.7 one... hopefully the response times will be a bit more consistent.. the VX924 was horribly neither-here-nor-there

I'm fairly convinced this is the monitor for me now.

However, looking at a couple of photo's. I see the various monitor and power leads sticking quite clearly out of the Left of the monitor in its normal widescreen ratio? For me going to LCD would be for neatness as well as quality large size.

I'd rather have all those leads tucked underneath and be as less visible as possible?

Is this an as untidy monitor as I suspect?

So, Seriously, Seriously thinking about one of these screens (2405).

Had an iiyama 454 thats just died so nows a good time.

I mainly play games (BF2 and FS2004) and email etc.

From what I can gather this is a good bit of kit. Am I also right in thinking that most of you that have purchased this monitor from OCuk have had few if any dead pixels?

Unfortunatly I will have to drive it from my ATI 9700 pro until sometime in January when I can start replacing/upgrading my pc. I believe I read somewhere on this thread that I can play game s at say 1280x1024 and can either have the picture scaled and streatched to fit or have it letterboxed vertically and horizontally?

Thanks

The Monitor has a really nice cable tidy in the form of a large rubber clamp on the vertical part of the stand to tuck all the cables into. On the side there are a few USB ports and card reader slots. I have my keyboard and mouse plugged into the USB plugs behind and at the bottom of the screen so it really is very easy to keep things tidy on the desk.

And I bought mine from OCUK and have yet to find a dead or stuck pixel.
Video scaling is nothing short of amazing and yes you have the choice to stretch or have black bands :)

Hope that helps. Just get it, you won't regret it :)

Are these dead pixels?

For my husband's xmas present I bought him a Dell 2405 monitor. I must admit I was so impressed I decided to buy one for myself, I need the real estate to play WoW. :p

Today my monitor arrived. :) Everything looked good until I started to change my background colours as I was checking for dead/stuck pixels. I appear to have two small lines of black pixels to the top right hand side of the monitor which do not change colour at all. :(

I have attempted to take a digital photograph of the two lines and placed the mouse cursor next to them for comparison. I'm afraid it's not the clearest picture. The monitor is running at the max rez @ 60Hz.

I can't really tell how many pixel's may be dead in those two lines. I was wondering what other people here thought?

Also do you know if dead pixel's are they likely to spread, by that I mean do dead pixel's affect other normal pixel's around them?

Many Thanks

They dont look like dead ones to me, as many screens as ive seen with dead pixels (100's), normally they are easy to identify (a perfect dot, or a cetain colour for lazy ones).

Some screes just have slightly marked areas. And i doubt you really notice it on a screen that size!!!

No, dead pixels dont spread :)

Don't look like pixels to me either. I think you would know if it was a dead pixel as it would show up as a tiny dot, but very sharp and detailed in either black or white. or if a sub pixel it would be red - blue or green.

I think its a fault in the surface of the panel and definitely worth returning.

Finally hooked my one up, got one dead pixel about 1cm from the bottom so it's barely noticeable.

Fantastic screen otherwise though.

Ry@n, thank you for the explanation about the pixels and yes you are right if I hadn't been looking really hard I probably wouldn't have noticed them. :)

I agree with both of you. I am unsure about returning it as it definitely does not have any dead, stuck, lazy pixels and to be honest the lines are so faint they are hardly noticable. I have carefully attempted to clean the screen, but I suspect the damage is underneath somewhere as the screen itself has no visible scratches.

I've only had this screen less then a day and I would hate to part with it. Writing large Word documents is an absolute dream since it's easy to view at least 3 pages at once and WoW... well lets just say :D

Thanks to everyone who answered!

Hehehe... Im gonna put my two cents worth here aswell

The ghosting or blurring on the 2405 is insignificant. I agree with Baddass and the rest with this one. And Baddass' sources from TomHardwareGuide can be very much trusted. They are a very credible source. Shocky Im surprised you didnt know that??? :-)

But what needs to be established is the type of gamer you are. If you are leisurely strolling through games like Flight SIM and so forth, I think this monitor is fantastic. I couldnt imagine any problems.

But if hair trigger response is what your looking for, the 2405 is NOT what you want.
2405 has LAG. not ghosting, not blurring but downright lag. Its a VERY small lag, so landing an aircraft or cruising through LA (GTA) isnt an issue. In fact you will be completely oblivious to it. But if you're attempting a headshot with a rifle in a multiplayer scenario the LCD is a complete nightmare. Now I know many people will burn me for even considering a 2405 for serious fast paced shooting games, but I'd like to say that prior to my realisation I dont think anyone here claimed otherwise. ANd I certainly dont know of any official reviews that address lag with OVERDRIVE technology.

LAG is impossible to get used to whereas the small ghosting and blurring takes only a few days maximum to adjust to. That's the issue and I think everyone is missing the point when they talk about ghosting and blurring with the 2405.

And just because you play q4 and have no problems doesnt mean its fine. It just means that you probably like spraying bullets, and of course, who knows where those bullets are going. I doubt you are aware that your bullets are 2mm off, from the moving target. But if you pick up a rifle (with perfect accuracy) and try to shoot a moving target, AND THEN compare to a non 2405, you will notice your accuracy on the 2405 is a HELL of a lot weaker. For me, its the difference from being last in a game, to first.

I have to agree with Shocky on one thing.
Its easy to say.. you will get used to it... but in essence you can get used to a crappy CRT for that matter and be completely oblivious to what is better.
You can also go and spend a fortune on the latest graphics card to play picture perfect games and then ignore the fact that your monitor is lagging. FRAMERATES PEOPLE!

Shocky, if your a FPS gamer, I would wait probably another 3 years before going lcd.

But, in all other aspects, the 2405 is incredible. That's why I have two monitors now, 2405 and CRt connected.

Put it this way, if you just went out and bought a 7800GTX card... you better think twice about buying a 2405.

There is a thing on the back for keeping the leads tidy, kinda like a gripper, probably just that most people don't bother using it :) (I don't)

Guess what's shipped ? Yup Sitting here debating wether to go to bed early and see if santa comes early......

My New 2405 should be here in the morning!!!! Pity Ocuk did not sell DVI cables as well! Hated having to go into the shop with the blue shirts and paying £29.99 for a Belkin DVI cable!!!

um, the 2405FPW comes with a DVI cable

Better not !!! The Sales guy I spoke to at Ocuk this morning after I placed the order online was not sure, So I had to ask him to go and check (not "I'm not sure let me check btw"). He told me It did not come with the DVI!!! Will not be chuffed if he sat and drank tea for 3 mins and then just said no!!!

well mine did, and i know many others did too. Worst comes to worst, it prob won't be a problem to return it to the high street store anyway :)
