My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

For my husband's xmas present I bought him a Dell 2405 monitor. I must admit I was so impressed I decided to buy one for myself, I need the real estate to play WoW.

Today my monitor arrived. :) Everything looked good until I started to change my background colours as I was checking for dead/stuck pixels. I appear to have two small lines of black pixels to the top right hand side of the monitor which do not change colour at all. :(

I have attempted to take a digital photograph of the two lines and placed the mouse cursor next to them for comparison. I'm afraid it's not the clearest picture. The monitor is running at the max rez @ 60Hz.

I can't really tell how many pixel's may be dead in those two lines. I was wondering what other people here thought?

Also do you know if dead pixel's are they likely to spread, by that I mean do dead pixel's affect other normal pixel's around them?

Many Thanks

i have a similar problem with mine, its like a black smudge

its still an utterly fantastic monitor though and i dont regret buying it

if you look at it from a distance you can see it

any ideas?

all dell tft come with vga and dvi cables, alleast the one i got had

as for the smudge thing, not ever seen out like that

Yep, mine came with VGA and DVI too from OCuk, didn't get a power cable though and had to pop back to collect it as they forget to give it to me (not in the same box and monitor and video cables). Doh!

Arrived at 10:15am this morning along with other stuff, Opty, MB etc.

Had to replace the Shower unit in the Bathroom first!!!! (Its not overclocking very well, its running hotter than before ;) )

Just sat down and on first impression OMFG!!! What a screen!!! No dead pixels that I have seen so far!!.

Now going to swap motherboard and CPU so I will be back with update later!!!!

So Far VERY happy Bunny! :D

I have been offered a 2405FPW as a Christmas bonus at work...so I now need to make up my mind.

We have had one at work for 2 weeks and for Web pages, graphics and other processing its a wonderful monitor :) I have tried a DVD and it looked good as long as you do not sit very close to it ( 1 to 2 feet).

I like playing games like GTA, Warhammer, Civ, Doom3, Jedi Knight and Half Life 2. I have not played fast competitive games online since RTCW so that’s not important. I know you guys have said GTA is OK and strategy games should not be a problem. The question is... Is there a problem playing games like Half Life 2 (Or Doom3) on this monitor?

The monitor I have been using the last 2 to 3 years is an NEC 1760NX (17") which was one of the first 16ms LCD's. I have been happy with it, but it does suffer a bit with blacks and viewing angles, plus its a bit small now :D . I do not know if anyone has used the NEC1760NX and then moved to a 2405.

Is the Dell 2405 worse than the NEC1760NX for games? (Because of the overdrive or other stuff?)

Thanks

A confused little crazyswede :p

crazyswede,
short of reading all 20 pages of this thread I would say, for the games you've listed, you'll be blown away mate!! I've played thru HL2 and FEAR on it and was stunned mate. :)

Yep you can!

I have a 3ghz P4 with X800XTPE and play WOW at 1900x1200x2AA @ 30-60fps. Odd drops to 20 but you have a much better CPU/card. You should get a lot more with that card.

Oh, and 2gb is essential for keeping IF in double figures, lol :)

Got nearly the same setup but I've got a P4 3GHZ, an X850 XT and 1GB RAM, usinga 2405 screen WoW look stunning!

But I've got a question, While playing WoW it allows you to set the refresh rate to 85 MHZ but in windows it only supports 60MHZ, does this mean that I'll be able to change it in windows, or is this just unique to WoW

It should imagine that is for CRT only. LCDs don't go above 60Hz. Or certainly this Dell doesn't.

Thats what i thought, but however when i did up the refresh rate on WoW the game ran a lot more smoothly, strange hmmmmm

The only thing I can think of there is that you may be using VSync which locks the framerate at 60 fps to match the Hz of the display. If you then upped the refresh rate to 85, maybe VSync is locking the framerate at 85 fps therefore it looks smoother?? *just a theory*
