My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

I found myself using vsync with triple buffer at the moment while playing WoW in native rez on the Dell. Mind you I have an old 9800XT :p and it still usually pumps out 30+ frames while all details are set on max ^^. Not using AA though :(
 
Just got one from OCUK yesterday. Upgraded from a Dell 2001FP.

The picture quality is so much better than the 2001 IMO. Gaming takes on a whole new dimension especially as I am only sitting 2FT from the screen!

Mine was also perfect as in no dead or sleeping pixels and no backlight issues either. Reckon Dell are now checking these before they ship as mine also had the VGA cable already plugged in and only 1 of the screws was partially tightened. Build date is Sept 05 made in hungary. The Dell box it came in was only shipped to OCUK in Nov so must be from a recent batch.

DVD's look flawless to me. The compression artifacts go away when you tweak the picture settings in the DVD software player.

Only issues I can think of are:

1: Many older (and some recent like NFSMW) games do not support 16:10 so you have to either stretch the image sideways (looks ugly)or have vertical borders.

2: To run @ 1920x1200 requires a seriously fast PC. I can play FarCry64 with HDR and it is still smooth, as is Quake4 but strangely enough Doom3 & Doom3 ROE are slow @ this res. FEAR runs the same for me as it did @ 16x12. HL2 supports 16:10 so looks & runs the same as it did for me @ 16x12. My motherboard is only AGP so my upgrade path to a faster GFX card would mean a new motherboard/ram/gfx card. I will have to stick with what I have got for now as spent well over £2K with OCUK in the last year on continual upgrades!

Or you can do what I did and get an opty/asrock dual sata with agp & PCIe and get a faster cpu in the bargain!!!

I just Love my 2405!!! Had it since Wednesday from OCuk!!!

In fact it was so good I bought the moddable x500 GTO2 and its great.

If i may ask.. Does any one play counter-Strike:Source on this screen?
if so is it worth getting this screen?

I have a X850XT 256mb, <--- << with this GFX card will it run CSS does any one know.?

I can play HL2 (haven't tried CSS as uni has blocked it out ¬_¬) perfectly on this screen at over 40FPS in most instances with my old 9800XT, so you shouldnt have any problems at all :)
 
Got my 2405 delivered yesterday.....must say im delighted..no issues at all.

Its connected through DVI and although the contrast and aspect setting are greyed out on the OSD this is all accesssable throught the Nvidia drivers.

All I have to do now is trawl through the stickies with regard to widescreen gaming and try to understand it!!!!

I too received my 2405 this morning, along with the rest of my new system, and i was amazed at the sheer size of the thing. I thought the box (which was all wrapped up), had other bits in it, but how wrong was I! I am using it now and i am still amazed by it. Jumping from a 19" CRT, i must say that this screen simply blows it away.
There seem to be no dead pixels (i will use Badasses test thingy in a bit) and there is no sign of the whining that some users report. I am more than impressed to say the least

Worth every penny (i was lucky enough to get this on the offer)

Nope, no power cable. Did get DVI cable, VGA cable, USB cable. I just took the power cable outta my CRT and plugged it straight into the TFT, no problems. Looks like you gotta buy a cable to go with the monitor if you don't have one already. Bummer! :(

Just found the dead pixel finder, and i have one stuck on red in the bottom right hand corner. In normal use, i haven't seen it, i only picked it up when i put the screen totally white. I'll have to see if it goes with some fast paced use, as i have only used the screen in windows thus far. I'll keep u all informed :)

No you dont - just whoever you bought it from was too lazy to ship it with the main box - I bought mine straight from the manu and I got one in a seperate box and I have bought 4 Dell monitors in the last year

I would call to complain and get one sent FOC - their mistake, not yours :mad: ...

Heh, looks like i am complaining to OcUK then :confused:. No but seriously, i am really not that bothered about a power cable. I have far too many kicking about my house already to warrant another one. If i didn't have any, yes it'd be annoying, but luckily (or unluckily, depends on how u look at it) i hoard things, so have an xs amount of power cables :p
