"willy waving rig" omg that made me rofl ! Well yeah i cant be arsed to keep upgrading every 6 months to a year so i just i want something that will do me for 2 years, and 2x 295s come in at 988.98 so not over a grand but not far off !!!

Dya think ill be able to power everything sufficiently with a 850w PSU or should i get a 1000w ? My electricity bill is already 100 quid a month so i don't wanna get that extra power if its not needed :P

Thanks for all the responses i really appreciate it.

Well no one is forcing you to upgrade every 6 months, that depends on your will power to leave things alone and not be drawn in to having the latest and greatest.

I last upgraded my graphics card (8800GTX) over 2 years ago and my CPU (q6600 on a P35 mobo) 18 months ago. Both are holding up with todays games without any compromise to perfromance or settings.

Yes, cards will come and go for the next 2 years or so, but a single 295 will see you out to then and beyond.

It really will be a nice rig and the envy of your mates, but they'll be going on holiday whilst you'll be at home looking at depreciated equipment in no time.

That's what I would do, and what about a nicer case with some of the money saved? A Silverstone TJ07 or TJ10 would be nice with that setup? or one of the larger Lian Li, (Armorsuit PC80?).

And you HAVE to write up a build log on that beast so we can all drool over the pictures :D

Good luck with the build ;)

Good thinking mate, although most of the other cases i looked at did not have a window and it may just be my personal preference but when forking out my hard earned money i kind of want a case with a window so i can see all of what i spunked it on rather than just a nice case that could contain anything.... will try and get a build log going, never done that before but would like to share it with all you guys seeing as you helping me to make some choices i wasn't sure on :D

one more point, i know a lot of you see this is excessive but please remember im gaming at a res of 2560x1600 which i really do not believe one 295 alone would be able to achieve the framerates i would like.

Looks a good rig, but when spending so much money why add an old CDROM drive?

Add this blu-ray drive, which can write DVDs as well.

Indeed, makes sence to me. But for what he's using it for, he would be watching blu ray movies on his TV and not on his PC - so is there really any point forking out the extra money? There won't be any other benefits other than being able to watch blu ray films right?

He can watch Blu-Rays, HD-DVDs, read and write DVDs.

Yes he can watch Blu-Ray movies on his PC, or if he wanted to, hook it up to his TV.

There's no point forking out over 2 large on a rig, then sticking an old CD drive in it, or am I misguided?

thats exactly what i thought, i watch my blue ray stuff on my PS3 so i dont really NEED one, the only thing i was thinking is burning music to like 40gig CD's would be awesome if only they would play in a Car stereo but seeing as my head unit only plays CD's it would be king of pointless me having one all together i reckon

So, changes so far are...

upgrade to a 1000w PSU
upgrade to a solid state hdd
downgrade to 6gb of ram rather than 12gb

gonna role with Nvidia rather than ATI as i have a 3870x2 now and it doesnt even handle the shadows on full in Wow at 2560x1600 plus i feel my nvidia fanboi roots calling me.

If you are going quad gpu get 2 x 295 and not 2 x 4870X2.
I've heard that people will often get better performance with 1 4870X2 compared to 2. Quadfire is in it's infancy I suppose.

I would normally recommend a single 4870X2 as it is better value, but your budget seems great enough to warrant more.

Have you looked at in game benchmarks with 2 x 295s? I would want to be sure they perform well with the games you want to play before making the purchase.

No I totally agree with what your saying, but (being a good friend of the TurboDuck) the pc wouldn't be used for playing Blu rays or HD DVDs, therefore for this reason I would suggest that a DVD writer would be acceptable - becides, it's easy enough to upgrade in the future should he change his mind :D

I'll be helping build the PC so i'll be sure to get my camera out! ;)

Going by the Anand article i suggest going for 2x 4870X2s.

Use the spare cash and buy SSDs.

Hell, if you wanna be excessive, buy one of the expensive Areca RAID controllers with on board RAM, and put like 3-4 Extreme Intel drives on it >_>

At least you are going to feel the difference there, kind of anyway.
