My new Samsung 26" LCD

Has anyone had any joy connecting the sammy to their pc via hdmi?? Ive got the lead (dvi to hdmi) but cant select a resolution that fits on the screen  I can choose 1280x720 which is fine via VGA but with the hdmi lead but it doesnt fit and the text looks blurred? the only other resolutions available are 800x600 1900x1600 and these is no good either?? do I have to make a custom resolution???

The reason I want to connect this way is in this thread below

Im thinking about getting one of these as a second display to my 19" LCD, for movies and TV mainly, but also to use with my PC as a second display, either to play games on it and still see windows background or have windows on it and play games on my 19" LCD.

What do you guys think? its an awful lot of money you see, and i dont know if i want one just yet. Im thinking of going for one of the HD CRT's, a bigger 32" jobby just for movies and TV when they come out over here. I cant really make up my mind.
Don't bother, for the price, it's not worth it. CRTs will suffer the same problems existing ones do, bad geometry and will be very very bulky.

If you're looking at something for the PC too, go for the Dell 2405FPW, loads of inputs, VGA, component, DVI and all that, 24", very high resolution (will do 1080p), and decent brightness settings.

Movies and TV over here won't be for ages (in HD), and will have teething problems that you'll want to pass by, you'll be waiting minimum of a year for that. Just get the Dell chappie!

In principal I agree with you - however you are potentially trying to convince him to pay an additional £250+ or more for a new graphics card as well ( as while the Dell is fabulous, those high resolutions need a monster of a video card to do them justice) and possibly a new cpu / mobo / ram also.....so let us know wild58 what yur rig is like and then we can make a better judgement (obviously the Sammy has a much lower resolution compared to the Dell so its a lot easier on graphics cards

Believe me, once you have a Sammy or any big monitor you will want to try out games on it(I certainly did)

Heh, thanks for the advice guys.

Atm iv got a 9800pro, 1 gig of ram and an athlon 3200 64.

Another monitor im looking into getting is the Hyundai Q321 32" HD Ready LCD Monitor from ocuk, anyone know if its any good? My business is making the purchase so no paying for VAT, budgets guna be around £650. thanks guys.

The Tv's guna be for DVD use mainly, aswell as a second monitor and if i get along with it as this, a primary monitor.

With that rig and for those uses I personally would go for the sammy

imo you would need a much better reg to justify getting Dell 24", and even though OCUK sell the Hyundai i wouldnt touch one with a barge pole :D

Is the 'place' that does the 20% discount still actually doing the discount? I want to order one but when I read the terms of the 20% off it says its not for electrical items? Did the 20% have to be from a code you enter or is it just knocked off at the end of your first order?

use the DREP code, worked for me yesterday :)

tho i accidentally ordered 2, ooops

Can anyone tell me what the picture would be like for one of these Sammy's through Freeview compared to through a Sky box?

The reason I ask is that a friend has just got one of these TV's, the model without Freeview, and he has his connected through his Sky box and says the picture is great.

I have also been thinking about getting one, but I am not prepared to pay for Sky, so I'm a bit concerned about the difference I can expect in picture quality between the two? I am a complete novice when it comes to all this stuff so any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

SKYHD is available now. Better off investing in that. However the Digital picture quality is pretty good.

Ok, well that's good to know, as I said I am not prepared to pay a monthly fee for Sky at this time so Freeview will have to do.

Thanks a lot

make sure you can recieve a digital signal in your area before buying anything,. Also, look at one of the Sony Digi Boxes with a hard drive. Be able to record TV then...

Quick question for you all:

Looking at the specs/discussion on other forums for this, it doesn't support PC over DVI, only over DSUB (old analogue). Surely its shouldn't care if I plug a DVI - HDMI cable between the PC and screen? What gives?

Well this is what ive been griping about a few posts back, I tried the dvi to hdmi lead and the picture is terrible, the text is very blurred with the display not fitting the screen no matter what res i use,,, :( Real shame really but the vga connection gives an absolutely crystal clear picture which rivals some monitors ive seen,,, looks like im gonna have to try a KVM switch so I can have two vga's going in :)

my origian post was:

Thanks for the info.

I spotted this screen in Selfridges today. Although it was running the Samsung demo reel (so pinch of salt needed) the picture was damn good, no ghosting etc. I was explaining to the girlfriend why its such a good screen and she said that I shouldn't get the 26 inch model..... I should get the 32! W00t. Twas a grand in Selfridges, about 250 less online. Do John Lewis pricematch online? Or I might have to go down Tottenham Court road to get some prices to pricematch with.

The 42 inch was simply amazing. Shame my house is not big enough!

I ordered the new 74BDX model (26" version) day before yesterday, should be here Wednesday hopefully :)

Will be using it as a main PC display and Xbox 360 screen (when that arrives on Thursday - fingers crossed).

Will post a mini-review-thing hopefully.
