My new weekend toy - Supra TT :-)

Ive been on the mkiv since june 2011 but havent posted much at all.

I often turn up at the meets and big events just to get pics

Was you the bloke in the corsa? I met someone at the anniversary meet, he didnt own a supra but he just liked taking photos and attending meets...

I have just updated post 1 with the build/restoration progress. I have reached the limit on pics so I will add them on later.

Nice read, that purple colour really came alive after you gave it a good clean!

Would be good to see a few videos :p

Yes it did, when the weather pics up I am going to clay it as I have yet to do this. The pictures at castle hill dont do the colour justice, it was low light so they came out darker. Videos are on the list of things to do/make :)

Nice work

Thanks..

Here is a picture of the engine when I got it

And this is a picture now..

From the picture you can see the new turbo vac hoses, new upper radiator hose, strut brace powder coated in satin black. Blitz rad cap. I vinyl wrapped the upper air intake but I will probably end up removing and respraying all the plastic bits in satin black. The wipers before and after can also be seen.

The ali cooling plate is missing from the pictures as I sent it off to a friend to copy.

Really good work there, especially considering you'd not worked on cars before. Did you have a helping hand along the way? Did you borrow quite a few tools? I still find myself very occasionally having to borrow tools, most recently it was some spring compressors.

Nice to see someone looking after a car rather than stripping/scrapping it!

Yes Iky who owns a supra is handy and does a lot of his own work, he did help me a fair bit. I didn't really need any tools, the halfords kit covered most. I did have to buy extensions. Also I recommend getting a heat gun (borrowed this) to take off old nuts. What also would have been nice to have is them bendy spanners to get in awkward places.

It looks simple but believe me some of it was very hard and I struggled for days.

Are you running it in sequential or TTC?

The latter should stop one of the turbos breaking again, and sound a bit more like a single turbo :)

I am running sequential at the moment, I have had it mostly in TTC but I prefer the sequential as it gives you more low down power. TTC did have a nice grunt to it :)

How long a project was it, from picking up to the MOT date?

I can't really be bothered to work on cars these days, I might get a track car to play with at some point but can't see it happening any time soon. I'll only do oil changes and fairly simple things now.

I was mainly waiting for the log book so I could get insured in order to drive to the MOT station. Its a difficult one to answer but looking at my pictures "date taken" data it took 5 months. I wasn't in any rush and was working on it weekends and odd days.

how have I only just seen this thread?? You've done an excellent job OP. looks awesome :)

I only updated it earlier today with the full build..;)

Love the mods and work you've done, although I have to admit:

- I really really don't like that colour, it's awful.
- The bodykit is nasty as well.
- The wheels as a result of the above, don't suit it.
- I'm not keen on the front numberplate either.

But apart from that, enjoy! It's just my opinion after all - if you like it, who cares? :p

LoL sounds like you dont like any of it ;) The front bumper is eventually going the rest of the "body kit" is stock

I prefer the indiglo dash and the dash surrounds. before it didn't look great.

The dials I managed to break somehow so its back as normal until I figure out what to do...

Do you find you are happy with BPU and don't crave single turbo power?

I have never been in a BPU supra but I have driven a few with single's and it is addictive!

I have never been in a single yet and I dont understand why anyone would want more power than BPU, its crazy!

I've been in one that had over 400 at the wheels.....'twas nice....very nice :D

Hopefully I should be getting that at the fly

They never did an aero manual they are all autos unless they have had the 6 speed installed which will demand even more money. A 6speed box alone 2nd hand goes for £3500 excludes fitting. At the top end of your budget you might be able to get a 6 speed but you will be very lucky.

There are a very few JDM aeros that had them fitted.

Nigh on impossible to get one nowadays though.

The rear bumper doesn't look stock?

Yeah, it's mainly the front that bothers me. It might be the light also but the back doesn't look stock?

There are plenty of things I do like - the interior is cool in a "90's Jap" kinda way, the engine is smashing and I do get pangs of wishing I had one of these (Gran Turismo side talking there).

The rear end is stock other than the lip which could be blended into the spats.

I like the colour - its different! Any plans to go for a manual conversion?

Miss my old one :( 4 years this month since it died.
Sorely tempted to get another one now.

How did it die? Did you do a Wraith on it?:p

There is nothing wrong with the auto transmission other than lack of driver engagement. I prefer the auto because Im sick of changing gears having owned 2 many diesels lol...If anything I would probably get it rebuilt to with stand more power and get a hi stall installed. Manual conversions are expensive, as I mentioned above the box costs £3.5k alone!

I will have to drive a manual first, at the moment my priority on the car is the mechanical then body work. I plan to have this car for as long as possible...so a manual box could be the cards (if the price comes down!).

Forgive me if this sounds a bit retarded, i'm not that savvy on Auto's but what are the 2 and the L under Drive?

L is 1st gear only
2 is 1st & 2nd gear only you can put it into manu mode which alters it to 2nd only

MANU makes the transitions between gears faster. The ECTS throttle system cuts back on the throttle during gearchanges, and in MANU mode it cuts back less, therefore making the shifts harsher but losing a bit less acceleration during the gear change.

^^ Useful for launching.

March Update

I did not attend the RR session in Feb, mainly two reasons, the weather was poop and the coil connecters were perished so the car had a very slight misfire which could effect the dyno reading, oh and I spent the money on a new car stereo :)

Spent the early part of Jan/Feb sorting the heater matrix out, man was it a big job! Some pictures below…I was breaking and snapping things a lot!

102.jpg

The old pipes part of the heater matrix were removed and replaced

103.jpg

104.jpg

Old matrix left vs new right (nothing wrong with old matrix just the above broken pipes forced the replacement…

105.jpg

Part of the heater matrix change requires the old AC gas to be removed, which I got a garage to remove it and 2 weeks later to regas once everything was back together and they only charged me £40 :) The AC is blowing ice cold ready for the good weather…

I decided to replace the OEM speakers ready for the new (2nd hand) stereo which I had purchased to replace the 20 year old stock one. I had some 6” speakers laying around and also was donated some more. I didn’t want to spend loads of the audio so went with what I had from previous cars.
The audio system in the supra for its age was a decent setup other than the speaker condition was now naff. As stock in GZ model, the car had front tweeters, 4” door speakers, rear speakers and sub which was essentially a 6x9 all powered by an amp under the passenger seat. All was removed and replaced…

Rears (back seats)

106.jpg

Replaced with some 3 ways, and I ran new cables from this location to the head unit.

107.jpg

The front door cards/pods had to be modified to cater for the larger speaker and I followed some guides and did a DIY on them…

108.jpg

109.jpg

The speakers were alpha sonic, can’t say I heard of the brand but they looked like a good quality product, it’s amazing what you can find in the cellar (belonged to my brother).

With the door card on, it’s a bit of a tight fit with the OEM speaker cover so I am thinking of modding it slightly to fit the covers that came with this speaker. Either that or use something a bit more stronger than double sided tape and Velcro, both have failed resulting in the speaker cover to pop off..

110.jpg

New stereo…

The new stereo I got is a Sony 601BT, nice piece of kit, DVD, Bluetooth, mirror link ipod connections etc Took some time but eventually managed to fit it all in…

111.jpg

112.jpg

I bought a wireless reverse camera kit a while ago and decided to hook this up too, the supra has a key hole in the rear light cluster, I decided to get rid of the lock and fit the camera into there. It sort of fits but needs a little modding. I am getting some slight damp around the light so I need to seal it when I get the chance…

113.jpg

You can see the camera clearly in this picture, right light cluster

114.jpg

Picture of how it looks on the screen in reverse, It would be nice for the lines to be not there but its part of the camera, gives me a rough idea of space if visibility is poor.

115.jpg

I need to make a custom sub box to allow my roof to fit into the boot so once that’s done I will post some better pictures. The amp is currently in the boot and at the moment it’s just running the sub.

I have been driving the car a lot recently and it developed an awful noise coming from the rear passenger side. It turned out to be a wheel bearing issue. I got a local garage (mechanics I know) to replace the wheel bearing and they also replaced the rear shoes and adjusted the hand brake which I have never used! I didn't have the skill or tools to do this job and as I needed the car, it couldn't wait for me to get around to doing the work otherwise I would have had a go myself.

Whats next? Well those coil pack connectors need replacing so that is next on the list as priority 1. The custom exhaust has been adjusted so its not sitting too low, however its making rattling noises that I find annoying whilst driving so that needs to be addressed. Tempted to buy a nur spec r as the current exhaust is not very loud and the fit on them are great . I also want to sort the interior, the OEM carpet is shot and was grey at some point, I want the face lift model black carpet but Mr T charge a lot so I am on the look out for some 2nds. I also want to replace the matts with new black ones…. I want to take the vinyl wrap off the dash and have them resprayed. The car needs a good wash, infact needs a good respray…. I think I need to start making a list again lol

Ill have a look on the owners club for you, I take it your budget is around £3k? Im sure there will be a nice N/A for that mark as that's usually the going rate.

Small update:

I have bought some coil pack clips to replace my broken ones and also bought a set of Tein 2nd hand coil overs, I will be fitting these myself next week.

Took a video a few weeks back...60-100mph PULL

^how do you insert videos^ :( *thanks Ianh*

a little update, someone at work left the hand brake off their car and it rolled back into mine :( and damaged the wheel, wing, bonnet and bumper. I am trying to get something sorted but if things work ok should be having some changes with the front end ;-)

Dyno day at Evotune on saturday just gone. Car made 369 HP
The reason for the red bumper is because I am going back to stock front end, just waiting for the bodyshop man to return from his holiday...

Aw man I think that front bumler looks the best out of all those front ends. Plus you probably have the best colour too.

the bumper gives it a camaro look imo.

lol I do like the bumper it has grown on me, but prefer the stock one with a lip. Colour is lovely though i will be respraying it in the same colour.

Anyone Knows the wheels on it? Read the thread and couldn't find anything. Also, lovely supra! Shame about the incident, hope it's not too expensive

There Wolf race sharks I think mate  very common with supras and halfords lol these will be going soon.

I got paid out mate and I am looking to get the whole car done :)
