My opinion on Wayne Rooney

Shut up DM

Gets called out on utter BS about Aguero because you seem to know so little about the game you didn't realise he was carrying an injury for the majority of the past year..... tells me to shut up.

This entire thread suggests you don't have a god damned clue what you're talking about, not a better central midfielder out there than Kroos, lol, sure. Absolutely average midfielder lucky enough to be in brilliant teams. poor scoring rate, woeful shooting/goals ratio, poor tackler, poor defensively.

Due to position he simply stands around 5-10 yards outside the box, lots of loose balls or general possession play goes through there. He shoots from range constantly and rarely scores, when he does they are pretty simple goals. That is the majority of what he does well, stands in space, gets passed to, either passes it on sideways or shoots with a poor conversion rate.

Rooney is an average player who is occasionally brilliant(for Utd). Has far too many games where he has the touch, skill and pace of a one legged donkey.

For a 6 month period in 2011 in my view he was the best player in the world. He is intermittent but at his best he can be unplayable. I do think Fergi killed his killer instinct which has held him back.

Not really, the problem is he's that consistent that when he does mess up it's scrutinised massively...a bit like when Rooney has a bad game. He messed up against Liverpool last year with a bad clearance and got sent off against Hull, I think people were then writing him off. City are woeful without him.

And against Barca where demichelis got slaughtered for getting sent off and giving away a pen (which should've been a freekick), when really it was Kompany's fault.

He was dire against cska, getting owned by mr.ultimate team

Kompany's first 2, or 3 seasons(forget precisely when he joined) were epic, he was outstanding in the first league title win and he's been a bit pants since then. Still shows some great strength and great tackles but he's been more mistake prone for sure. Part of that is constantly changing partnership and part of that is down to him being repeatedly injured over the past two years.

Kompany hasn't been at his best for a while but he was brilliant for 2-3 years before that and you can see reasons for him not to be in the best form. It's pretty hard to consider him as currently one of the best though.

Very good player, but considering where he was when he first joined United. I'd say he hasn't lived up to the hype.

He's regressed over the years instead of getting better with age.. Case in point is the whole Rooney v Ronaldo argument when both were at United in the early years, you can argue Rooney was the better player in the early years. Look at them now..

Ronaldo has gone on to improve in all facets of his game, while Rooney is as inconsistent as he's ever been.

Still a very good player mind you, just not this world class talent everyone labels him with.

Think this is a good point. Either rooney just hit his potential limit or he didn't truly commit to being a total athlete like ronaldo and held himself back that way.

Those are the teams between 2006 and 2012 that England faced in the group stages - a 'world class' striker should have at least managed one goal or more against them.

.

I think you could build a similar list of teams Messi has failed to score against? I think international football especially with England isn't a good benchmark. Most of them barely give a ****.

Ashley Cole is about the only consistent performer I can think of over the years. Even Beckham lived off one game for 56 years. So many England players have never got on in the same way they have for club.

He's far too over hyped. He's a good player, but is so inconsistent. I think he got lucky when he broke onto the scene with Everton and quickly grabbed by Man U. Most of his success has been down to the team he was in, rather than himself doing anything about it

He didn't get lucky, he was just putting the fear of god into teams when he was 18. Sadly he's nothing like the same player. I imagine he's about 18 months off being an Everton player again. :D

And Sunderland in the final when he should have just forced Borini to the byline but instead tried some weird karate kick clearance and completely cocked it up. He's a great defender, but I don't think he's world class.

Surprised no one has mentioned Ibra yet. 61 league goals in 70 games for PSG and 10 goals in 7 CL games last season isn't anything to be sniffed at. Not to mention 23 goals in 25 games for Sweden over the last three years.

You're absolutely right, phenomenal record - but he's playing in Ligue 1. If he had that record in La Liga or The EPL then it would be a different story.

Rooney isn't world class. He goes through periods of good form where he looks an outstanding player, but they don't seem to last long and aren't frequent enough.

I never thought it would happen but the combined IQ of The Running Man and DM has finally dropped below double figures. The lack of logic in some posts actually hurts, the rest of the time it's just cringeworthy.

Couldn't agree more, see below for more ridiculous statements.

Kroos is average?

I can't even be bothered to begin to entertain you with a reply. As I don't wish to hear your utter **** response to it

average
"having qualities that are seen as typical of a particular person, group, or thing."

That's the perfect summation of Rooney for me, he was recently suspended for United and you couldn't tell that he was missing, same thing when he's missing for England infact I think they attack with more fluidity without him. All you really miss is the character of Rooney and the media/pundits have nobody to fawn over when he does something distinctly average.

For me the top players are huge losses when they're missing, Mata can't even get into the Spanish squad and he filled Rooney's role with ease. Rooney might still be a top striker but when he's constantly playing as a midfield 'playmaker' that's what he'll be judged on.

In my opinion Rooney is definitely among the class of players who are just below Ronaldo and Messi (who are freaks and well ahead of everyone else to be honest). Rooney's goals and assist record has been phenomenal for United and England for years. Even last year when United were terrible, he scored 17 goals and assisted 10, in 29 premier league appearances. That's very impressive for someone who doesn't play on the shoulder of the last defender like your typical striker.

It's been the same story pretty much every season:

2012/13 - 27 games, 12 goals, 10 assists
2011/12 - 34 games, 27 goals, 4 assists
2010/11 - 28 games, 11 goals, 11 assists
2009/10 - 32 games, 26 goals, 3 assists

In fact, other than having a poor 2008/09 in terms of goals and assists he's been very consistent for years now. I doubt there are many players in world football who have provided consistent input like that for their club. I'll admit that Rooney hasn't showed up at major tournaments for England, but for many of them he was just recovering from injury or was still injured. This term 'world class' is so nebulous anyway, so many people adjust it to fit their opinions but ignore the facts.

He isn't world class but he is very good. He is just very frustrating a lot of the time. You can see such a marked difference between when he is on form and when he can't be bothered.

2012/13 and 2010/11 are not the stats that would be associated with a world class player for his position. I think that should sum of this thread to be honest.

There are very few 'World Class' footballers playing today. 'World Class' is one of the most over used phrases in modern football, especially in British press.
