My opinion on Wayne Rooney

Yesterday is the perfect example of how Rooney is idolised and gets put on a pedestal by the media for relatively little in the way of performance.

He had an ordinary game with his team getting absolutely battered beyond belief, his team nick a VERY lucky goal to put them a goal in front and then at the end when Arsenal are throwing the kitchen sink at United and leaving themselves wide open at the back he ends up 1 on 1 with the keeper and scores in what was his and his teams first shot on target in 84mins.

The media have been falling over themselves about his 'winner' since and he's headlined in most of the newspapers and online articles, it's a completely overblown reaction which feeds in to the claims that Rooney is world class. Di Maria was the best/standout United player yesterday by a mile despite his miss at the end, yet even if Di Maria had scored his chance to get a third it would still have been Rooney celebrating posted everywhere.

i have had sky sports on all day, and other than it being shown once along with all the other goals from the matches yesterday nobody has mentioned it.

It's obvious who the Man U fans are in this thread and who aren't.

Rooney has failed to score more than 14 goals in six of his ten seasons at Man U. A world class player at a team like Man U would not get stats like that IMO.

You can argue all you want that he isn't played as a front striker, but why not? If he was world class, you wouldn't be playing him out of position would you?

Maybe not just rely on stats to make your opinions?

Actually watch a lot of games, and you will soon see he doesn't play for himself but for the whole team's benefit

He may not be in Ronaldo's or Messi's standards (but then no-one else is either) - and bale shouldn't be considered anywhere close until he has managed at least another 4-5 years at the same level he has been on for the last 2 ish seasons

.

Seeing as Di Maria couldn't even get a shot on target in the same kind of situation kind of proves how good that goal was taken by Rooney

The composure to score a goal one on one is developed by practice, practice practice. Not Luck as you suggest

Assuming 4 strikers/center forwards would Rooney be one of them? No. Not at present... In the past he would have been (2004

IMO the following were all better than Rooney in 2004:

Henry
Shevchenko
Ronaldo
Van Nistelrooy (probably better options if given enough thought)

If you're in the top 5 strikers in europe for nearly 10 years in a tough physical league i think you're doing pretty good. No he may not be the greatest. But he has always been great.

I never suggested Rooney's finish was luck but then scoring a one on one isn't exactly limited to world class players either, they're scored every week throughout all four divisions.

I just said that he had an average game, he/his team got dominated, the first (deflected) goal was lucky and is the only reason he had the chance late on because Arsenal had thrown everybody forward in search of an equaliser. The way the media have acted since him scoring you'd think he had scored a hat trick of wonder goals and that United weren't thoroughly outclassed in midfield.

Di Maria was the standout outfield player, he looked a cut above everyone else... especially that run from the half way line where he passed to Rooney in the box who wasted it when RvP was wide open 10yrds away from him.

De Gea obviously played brilliantly as well it would have been 3-0 at half time without him, but no.. Rooney gets all the plaudits from the media and pundits for yet another world class performance, give him another pay rise.

Maybe you should look at the first goal more closely

Rooney and another Utd player are actually right in the path of the ball before the deflection anyway, just by the back post, completely unmarked

As Rooney he has the third highest amount of goals in the Premier league, he must be doing something right.

If Rooney can score goals for England with a bunch of poor Liverpool players in the team, he must be doing something right.

I'd say three of them players are WC.

I'd say Neuer (assuming that's who he meant), Ronaldo, Messi and Bale are there.

Others might be Suarez, Schweinsteiger, Fabregas, Vidal, Hazard, Modric, Silva, Kompany. It's probably a bit late to say John Terry but he's clearly the best English centre half still. Huge dearth of class defenders at the moment.

I can understand someone that doesn't know anything about football putting Pique down due to games he plays and teams he plays for, but that's all.

Long time lurker here, thought I'd chip in for once :)

With football being such a massive global sport, I define anyone who is generally ranked among the top 10 in the world in their preferred position as 'world class'.

As for Rooney himself, as a MU fan trying not to be biased, I would say that over the years he has been among that top 10 in at least a couple of periods in his career so far. I wouldn't say he is in it currently, but that obviously doesn't stop him being an excellent player.

I would agree with most of that, but Bale hasn't been playing at the top most level for long enough to prove he is world class - the indications he will be there before long are there, but not yet.

Robben is a much better player than Bale. Bale isn't really that talented of a footballer, he has good power and pace with a good left foot but his technical ability is no where near as good as it should be to call him word class.
