N95 Release

Cancelled my contract with orange today, They need 30days notice so it looks like my ive got the n70 for another month. Ill order my n95 2-3days before the n70 gets switched off.

We could do with a few comprehensive reviews on this phone, as im seeing reports at both end of the spectrum. Some saying its amazing in every regards, and some saying its complete rubbish.

i also recieved mine this morning, fantastic phone, the stereo sound is like nothing ive heard on a phone before, and video/photo quality is great, im also shocked at how little branding t-mobile has on the phone, compared other N Series phones, still seams a little slow but im coming from an MDA which was quite fast anyway, the only other complaint is one a lot of official reviews have said which is the slide mechanism (sp?) is quite loose but this isnt a major issue, definately the best phone ive owned to date (and ive owned a few, including Vario II, Compact III, N73 & 8800 Sirocco).

i got mine on a new contract Flext 50 (18) and got the phone free of charge...

i would say its Nokias answer to HTC's TynTyn (vario 2) with better features and running on S60.

I have a strange question for those who have received their phones!

What languages does it support? Can you change the language to Simplified Chinese?

I think it's going to be a while before we see this phone out here, and it will inevitably be over-priced when it does arrive.

People only go their units yesterday, I am sure one will be done in due course. I havent read one bad review of this one on any forum. The only bad thing about this phone I would say is the slow GPS. It takes an age to connect.

I would have asumed that review units would have shipped weeks ago?
Regardless, ive seen bad reports on a lot of phone sites, mainly from the user opinions though.

How big are the GPS maps that are available to download and can you download them via your PC and then import them?

Only ask as i'm off to Canada soon and i'll need to download the British Columbia and Alberta maps

Cheers

Spud

Yes, you can download them to your PC and import them to your phone for free. BC is 17.3 Mb and Alberta 10.4Mb.:)

How is it for texting/phoning/everyday use so far?

Great, really easy to use the sound quality is excellent no complaints abou the 'normal' functions. The menu on the front of the screen allows you to access the functions really quickly.

Intresting to see the size comparison between the N73 and N95. The N95 is smaller than I thought.

Ive got a N73 and on a O2 online 12 month tariff £35 per month, 400 mins and 500 txts. Upto July though I get 400 mins and 1000 txts which is good. Had it since January, please with the phone so far but I think I want a N95 from what Ive heard about them, yet to have an hands on experience though with one.

Ive looked on the O2 site, cant find the N95 yet, which Im thinking its out yet.

On the way home from work tomorrow, I will be popping into the O2 shop to see about an upgrade. How much it will cost and if I have to have this N73 for 6 months or so untill Im allowed to upgrade.

You mean downgrade to a £20 / month contract pay that for the remaining 10 months, sell the N73 and get a new contract with a N95 ? Downgrading to a £20 month contract wont they try and charge me for the N73 as its really not free on the £20 month contract.

Also the N95 aint free anyway I dont think.

not gonna do the leg work or the maths for you , but you can downgrade contracts and maybe work out a cheaper option , rather then just paying a upgrade fee

Not off the top of my head no. Dont be so suspicious. :p
I belive the site was one of those that lists all the offers for a specific phone, in the user comment section.

Im personally hoping that the N95 is the gem that it looks to be, and not just another N80. That its got a fast GUI, stable, not buggy and goodish battery life.

lol sorry!:p I am liking this phone the longer I have had it - it works so well, does so much and is fast/not buggy. I am really suprised as I was expecting bugs thankfully none yet.

This music review section about the N95 is great.

Here you go :D Taken from my-symbian.com

We got our review model earlier this week, with the final firmware (So the camera now takes pictures that aren't red, and the GPS works). The device feels flimsier than the prototype, and comments from people who have seen it include the opinion that it's cheaply built, and won't take any bumps and scrapes. The screen is also unprotected with the tough plastic of the N73 and the like. Time will tell whether this creates reliability issues with Nokia (let's hope not - Nokia has had quite a lot of trouble with some of its smartphone devices).

GPS reception is extremely poor. If you're expecting something with the sensitivity of a SiRF III chipset receiver BOY are you going to be disappointed. Put the phone in your pocket and you'll lose reception. Step on a bus and you'll lose reception. It also takes up to 15 minutes to get a 'warm start' fix, so if you came out of an underground train station and wanted to find where you go to a shop, restaurant etc then you'll have to stand around with the phone out in the open to get a fix. Can you tell that I'm not blown away by the GPS side?!

Camera seems okay in good light. In low light, it softens the image to hide colour noise but the end result is a dull picture that looks blurred. Screen is fantastic, but why does the camera take longer to load and open than the N73 (nearly 4 seconds?).

Battery life; Okay if you don't leave GPS on. I left Maps running and from full charge (9am) I had low battery by 1pm. It seems that the GPS receiver will destroy the battery. In fact, Orange UK is quoting just 1 day standby, and I would have to say it won't even last that if you're using all of these features.

Could this be the N80 all over again? Thank god the E90 has a massive battery inside it! I just hope that with a few more charges it gets better, but I'm a bit concerned that as it stands this Nokia will receive a bit of a backlash from people who had similar experiences with the N80 and were promised that this would fix all those issues. Like the N80, everyone raved about it at the start but once people realised the phone couldn't last a day, and so you had to use all the features sparingly (or not at all), people decided to switch. Many operators ditched the N80 like a shot when the N73 arrived because the battery matched the requirements.

The music player is good (as are the speakers), but as you can control all the music functions from the D-pad, there's no point in having those music control buttons that are fiddly to press! It means you can accidentally slip the phone screen down in your pocket, which releases the key-lock in the process! Might be worth installing a third-party keylock application on this as the slider does slide rather too easily.

Fingers crossed my opinion changes as I use it more, but because there are issues (some which could be fixed in firmware) I would recommend people wait a bit before taking the plunge. This isn't a cheap device!

Hmmm. I was going to get this phone on contract next month. This has made me rethink that dicsion. I'll wait for more reviews but battery life is a big factor for me.
