N95 Release

well ordered mine from O2 today. Have had to go to the £50 contract to get it for free but that gets me 1100 minutes + 500 texts and another 50% on top for being on an 18 month contract.

The only downside they won't get them until the 11th of April so have to wait a little longer but am happy with everything.

Just means my new memory cards that arrived today will have to wait a bit longer before they can be used.

Plus it means I have to have a new sim card. Seems such a shame as I've had this one for nearly 10 years.

So what would people recommend for some cool apps for this phone.

Mini GPS Report - Right then I am getting a little dissapointed now. In the real world GPS is pretty bad. I went to a walk with it and it took 5 mins to get a signal, it was working fine, tracking my position smoothly etc, until I put the phone in my pocket and went in the shop. When I came out, the damn thing was disconnected and wouldnt connect again - was holding it out and walking around for around 10 mins - still no connection. To that end its pretty useless! Maybe in a car in a fixed position it is ok but walking around it seems pretty bad.
Do you think this can be fixed with an update?

Edit - I just did the same route again and it worked fine - and connected quickly, very strange - so GPS seems a little temperamental. It may have been down to the fact I didnt have connection to an internet signal the first time (wasnt connected to 3g) and the 2nd time I was.

Cheers guys.

So just to clarify then Chrisp7, out of the box, the phone can voice navigate to atleast one location in the UK?

I just found out about this - no voice navigation has to be paid for by subscription. The reason I thought this worked is the simulation function (complete with voice directions) works but not for actual navigation itself. The GPS does track a route, mark it etc for free, sans voice.

The first application I'll be installing will be FExplorer, its been a god send on my N70 ;)

With a website like that, I would be very afraid to install it! What does it do?

This is taken from their website

FExplorer is an excellent file manager, and is our recommended tool for installing and uninstalling software where the default methods fail.

It's core is a suite of file managing abilities, which are basically complete;

Cut, copy & paste files
Check date modified & size
Display free space available
View file with inbuilt text viewer
Cut, copy, create & paste directories
File find. (although this only works within a directory)
Additional non-file manager related features are:

Take screenshots
Set your backlight to be permanently on.
Send files via bluetooth. (may be necessary to rename .sis to .sis_)
Compress memory - increasing available free memory

Got mine today, went into work (i work at O2) had a play and got it on another contract :D

£28 a month :D £20 for phone, god bless staff discount lol

I can't get the sat nav working though :(

I had a look around but it was such a mess I gave up.:p

Forgive my ignorance, it looks like a good app but cant the N95/N series do most of those things already?

Got this phone today, the T-Mobile version, it seems like a good phone, menus quite fast/responsive, (was a bit worried when i made it crash after only being in my hand for 5 mins!) not a great fan of S60 though but will be using it a second phone, also have a MDA vario 2 which I would say I prefer at the moment, but it is very early days. The GPS seems a litte weak compared to my bluetooth gps and I am a bit upset that closing the slide doesnt end calls, I am gonna have to get used to that. The speakers are great though as is the video recording quality, the 5 megapixel cam and half bad too! I do hear a high pitch sound during call though, I guess its from the screen but its quite uncomfortable during calls

No probs. Fexplorer just takes the easy way around and lets you access all the area's of the phone, especially the ones the Nokia have tried to lockdown. I find it easier moving things around from the phones memory to the memory card. each to their own really :)

One of the big things for me about this phone is VOIP/SIP (Free calls!)

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17712228

I will look into those but to be honest I think the voip will only be usefull for international calls give the huge amount of free minutes I have. :D

just a shame that O2 don't give you more free data transfer.

But then again with wireless I think I will be using that more than gprs anyway.

certainly will help me kepp up to date with my emails.

Just out of interest I am guessing this comes with some sort of outlook type app on the phone how easy is it to use? plus can you have more than one account set up?

I have to say it again, do you really need another phone? I don't mean to intrude but after posting your financial troubles for the world to see, you seem to still be incredibly stupid when buying flashy new technology. If that's a 12 month contract, you've just spend another £356. That's a lot of money. I just hope you don't still have three other phones alongside it....

hi guys looking at replacing my se w810 phone with the n95 and am just wondering what the sound quality is like and how is it for battery when playing music :) also whats the web browsing like with wlan i "work" in a factory with wlan in the whole place and would love to use the n95 for browsing the internet :p

I had a play with a N95 in the Vodaphone shop (proper handset with a battery installed) and have to say I'm not impressed. I wanted to like this phone as it appears to have all the features I could ever want.

Firstly, it felt cheap and poorly built not what I expected from the flagship model.

I don't like the feel of the sliding mechanism and how accessing the music buttons unlocks the handset.

The screen is nice but appears flimsy and is not protected like the N73.

The reports about battery life are my main concern. I do not want to take the chance of running low on power as I travel a lot and use the phone to keep in touch with work / family / access emails / send photo's etc etc

I was looking forward to the GPS function but that appears to be tempremental too !

Even a firmware upgrade can't fix the bits I don't like. All in all the N95 appears to be a great design but IMO badly let down by build quality and battery life. I would have thought the lessons of the N80 had been learned but it appears not. I'll be sticking with my Tytn for now.

I ended one of 2 of the contracts and started this one so i have 3 now instead of 4.

thats still crazy though isnt it? no point in asking the forum for financial advice when you do things like that
