N95 Release

GPS Problem solved!!

I thought it was an N95 hardware problem - it seems it is just a software problem. I was nearly going to send the phone back now probably not! All you need to do is download this:

http://www.mgmaps.com/download.php

It is google/yahoo/microsoft maps (satellite and virtual) combined with the GPS on the phone and its works a real treat. It works so well, tracks you smoothly, gets a signal instantly, you can add in landmarks, fon access points etc etc.

This is exactly how I imagined a GPS mobile device would work! Ok it doesnt have voice directions but thats not what I wanted it for. At any rate the existing GPS software on the phone will work well within a car.

Now all we need is VOIP/Skype sorted and we have a hell of a phone. (well and the battery life - which I havent tested yet)

Does the N95 use the same battery type as other Nokias?
If so, a 'sort of' solution to the battery life is to get one of those 1100mAh batterys to replace the stock 950mAh. Might get an extra 30mins-1hour out of the phone with it?

Phew i worried that the GPS would be a let down!

Have you tried apps like tom tom 6 on it?

Also i've been reading on other forums that the screen doesn't have a hard plastic protector on the top and you can directly touch and distort the screen like screen on a laptop/monitor?

Can you confirm that?

Ill give Tom Tom a try when I get my memory card:)

The screen is pretty hard actually, there is no screen protector no. If you prett a little with your nail you can see distortion but with the finger itself nothing. Personally I cant see the issue, if people are worried I guess they can buy a screen protector.

Same size.
Some of the mobile phone accessories websites sell them.
If they are the same as normal Nokia batteries, then the higher rated battery will fit fine. :)

Don't you think if the BP-6M batteries fitted, Nokia would be supplying them with the N95? The truth is, the BL-5F battery in the N95 is smaller/thinner to fit into the restricted space. The same battery is used in the N93i (hence it is smaller than the N93).

BoomAm sent me a link to a "BL-5B", the same battery as the N80, its not the same but do you think physically it might fit? You can get this battery (unofficial Nokia) in 1100mAh. Does anyone have both an N80 and N95 that can have a look at the sizes?

The N80 battery is completely different to the N95 battery. The BL-5B is quite an old battery.

I know its different but was hoping that it may squeeze in, if it did thats a 1100mAh battery = better!:)

Other than 3rd party batteries (which are probably inaccurately labelled), the only 1100mah battery Nokia makes is the BP-6M (as found in the N93, N73 and 6233). I think in terms of length and width, it is the same size as the BL-5F battery. The BP-6M is thicker though, so would basically mean you couldn't put the back cover on the N95 if you fitted it.

Whatabout that? Do you think it will fit, do you know the dimensions?

Well you can try it in the phones listed, but obviously not the N95 since the batteries are different sizes!

EDIT - I was wrong. They both look the same width. The BL-5F is longer, and thinner.

Nice find there:)

Got anything comparing the BL-5F and BL-5B as those seem more similar.

If you want to try VoIP download an application called Fring

Doesnt work with the N95 yet, it will I am sure soon.

The closest I can get is a comparison between a BL-4C and BP-6M. I *think* the BL-5B is a bit shorer, but thicker, than the BL-4C.

EDIT - Yes I'm correct, the BL-5B is shorter and thicker than the BL-4C. They share the same width though.

It comes including GPS software but not the spoken voice nav software (for driving) - that costs extra.
You can always install Tom Tom yourself afterwards.

No i dont.
There have been plenty of high capacity batteries out for a variety of products out over the last few years that the manufacturers havnt used, despite being relativly cheap.
For example, theres a battery that can be bought for £20, and fitted into an iRiver Hxx0, that boosts the life from 16hours to around 40hours.
Its the same for phones. Theres replacement batteries for most of the phones out there, that cost peanuts compared to the price of the phone, but increase the battery life noticably.
Manufacturers dont always release whats best for their product.

Forgive me, I just haven't seen the Nokia battery which is the same size as the BL-5F but holds more power. What's the model number for this other battery?
