I would struggle to respect someone who is for example racist regardless of age.

 where did that come from? We're talking about respecting people. Sure, if they turn out to be a racist you can test and adjust your regard for them. However, surely the default here is to respect people first and foremost.

Seems the problem is you people who can't do that, not necessarily "them unruly kids"

no - make it voluntary if you want to have it.

I always wanted to my service when i was kid, but as i got a bit older i did not want to as i don't see the point. I then left Germany so i didn't have to do it anyway :p

However with my family growing up in East Germany, i don't know what people think about this "getting a new outlook on life" when my uncle was stationed in the woods surrounding Berlin and getting told to shoot anyone in sight. no thanks :o

Having lived in switzerland where you also have a national service (which you can opt out of, but instead pay an additional tax!) it seems to screw up the employer more than the employee as you have to attend your national service over multiple years (you can choose to do the whole service in 1 go, but most people don't).

his point is that to respect someone, you need to know them well enough to respect their deeds, which takes time.

what you're referring to is manners and politeness.

I disagree,

I support these people on a daily basis....I see it with my own eyes.

but you've not done your military service and lack the conviction to do anything about that still (despite seemingly holding an opinion that it somehow improves people)

you're advocating something you know little about/haven't experienced yourself as a good thing to be forced upon others whilst not having the balls to do it yourself

I just meant that old people don't deserve more respect than others just because they are old. It wasn't that complicated a statement.

I really hate the term 'respect your elders'. People don't deserve respect just because they are old, they earn respect by their actions and words.
Is not the same as.

It really isn't that complicated, like you say.

Either way you put it, you infer that you don't just respect people off the bat. Your respect is earnt. Head up arse more like it.

It's the same sentiment said slightly different. People don't deserve respect just because they are old means the same as people don't deserve more respect than others just because they are old. As for having no respect for people your literally putting words in my mouth. I hate it when people have petty arguments that have nothing to do with the OP. No I have become one. :(

Oh so you don't respect other people either? And we wonder why our kids are growing into *****.

wow, chip on shoulder much?

it's not hard to grasp, just because i don't treat everyone i meet like some kind of deity because of their age doesn't mean i don't respect people who are deserving of it.

nor does it mean i don't use manners and politeness on all, regardless of wether or not i respect their opinion.
