Kids today are just people, no different from kids in any other era, some good, some bad, and certainly not deserving of effective indentured servitude based on a few anecdotes.

The ones who have lost it are those that judge all young people by the media hyped actions of a few.

Wasting your time, dude. He ain't gonna have any of that xD

My Scouts are independent, intelligent, community focused individuals with great drive and ambition. What would my Scouts gain from your proposed national service?

They would enage with others who were not so independent, intelligent, community focused and help and support them.

Im also lecturing 18yr olds through a degree, they certainly aren't feckless, idle or self absorbed. Should they do your proposed national service as well?

Absolutely. Life skills are just as important as academia.

I think it would be wholly unfair for the generation in power to instate national service for young people when they never had to do it themselves. Unless of course you are volunteering for a 12 month break from work in order to complete yours?

Stuck in an office for the last 15 years 5 days a week I would jump at the chance!

I disagree,

I support these people on a daily basis....I see it with my own eyes.

I worked in a Juvenile prison with 15 to 17 year olds and they were the scum of the scum.
I couldn't imagine any of them doing NS.

So what groups do you work with? Have you considered that maybe it's the subset you have contact with that display those traits?

However I agree with this, we were dealt a bad hand.

I don't see how compulsary NS would benefit anyone really.

Kids of today are no different to kids of my generation, but if anything they are smarter, more informed and more aware of the political and social bias / divides. It is all well and good working for the nation, or defending it and trying to instill some national pride in a young person, but how are you going to get them to swallow the hypocrisy, the lies, the political games and all of the other guff that permeates our country? We talk of freedom and liberty in one breath and then force people to serve without choice in the other?

We create an environment where young people struggle, then blame them because they are apathetic about a system that does not work for them and pack them off to boot camp to make them a "better citizen"?

Better meaning just do as you are told and do not question the state or it's leadership.

I don't think that is ever going to work and will breed more disillusion and apathy, particularly given most of the threats facing our country have been, to some degree, brought on by our own ruling classes and our own policy making both here and abroad.

The problem is that modern youth are too opinionated, don't know when to shut up, have no self-discipline and give little respect to their elders. The military is about being part of something bigger than yourself, I suspect many of them would struggle with the discipline and removal of personal liberties they have always taken for granted.

They would enage with others who were not so independent, intelligent, community focused and help and support them.

They already do.

Absolutely. Life skills are just as important as academia.

Can you define those "life skills"? I bet a lot of them already display a lot of what you will propose.

I don't think the notion of respecting your elders is a valid one either. Be prepared to show respect for everyone until they have shown themselves to not be deserving of it is wordier but more realistic.

National service should not include tasks which may involve war or policing, we're supposed to be moving away from the idea that young people are only good for throwing at an enemy if we have one.

The Civil service could use more people, for one.

No.

The Military is voluntary for a very good reason. Mixing strict military discipline with kids who may not want to be there would be an unmitigated disaster. I mean it can bad enough with those who 'do' want to be there :D

Genuine here george.

What do you do when on day one of the new national service initiative the vast majority dont show up?

And instead go to a nice big protest?

Is this like get the dole scum to sweep the streets for their dole money?

If there are streets to be swept then pay the going rate. Where do you draw the line, stack shelves in Tesco for your dole money... oh wait...
