I've been saying this since I was 18 myself, 10 years on and I still think it.
Never been in the army myself, however I used to do army cadets when I was younger and it teaches you good habits and discipline. Bonus is if it teaches you something productive ie there were options to learn a trade during your service.
Front line war? maybe not, but as long as the process is free from criticisms listed in this thread I think it wouldn't be a bad thing.
