It does seem like excellent timing. Just as the oil crisis peaks, one impediment to dealing with Iran has been removed.

I note the £400m Iran claimed was owed to them is being paid, in an entirely unrelated development.

They didn't just claim it was owed, the Brits agreed it was owed. Sanctions got in the way. Maybe we should also thank Putin for her release.

As someone else mentioned in SC, the UK was fighting tooth and nail to not pay up, she was caught between UK wanting to punish Iran and them taking her hostage. It was always connected, always and everyone knew it.

Then it turned to "we can't pay because of sanctions", to "we need to find a way of paying which will go to the people, not the military", our story has changed just as much as Iran's.

It's a sad story indeed, but I guess on some level the UK couldn't just pay up immediately, be it directly or otherwise because we'd essentially be paying a ransom.

Stretching it out, making it a real pita for the hostage takers in every way possible is a strategy of sorts to dissuade others.
 
I guess she'll never see her family there again, which is a bit rubbish, but a dual national would have to be bat**** crazy to go to Iran again.
 
Iran pay for a fleet of Challenger 1 tanks - they dont get them and want the money back. Fast forward 43 years and the refund is processed.
 
Amazing, the oil crisis and BoZo off to see his friendly dictator in Saudi for oil supply and things get sorted with Iran because they want Iranian oil to start flowing again into the market to keep down prices. Even paid Iran the money they had kept since the 70's.

The staue will be for Zelenskyy. You'll probably want to tear that down too but it might be more unpopular.
Personally, I'm happy she and Anoosheh Ashoori are on the way home to their families, being a pawn in a political game can't be much fun.
