NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

Sitting in front of a CRT at the moment, and it occured to me to ask, is it more or less reflective than a glass-fronted CRT?
Well, it's difficult to tell as I simply don't know what is your current monitor and what type of screen coat or glass does it have ;) Anyhow, for example I think that NEC is maybe 20%-25% more reflective than my old CRT, as a guess. But again ... it's different type of reflection and as general guideline it's much more sensitive to the very bright objects placed just in front of the screen. As I already mentioned many times, screen "calmness", glare "smoothness" and (at least perceptive) colour reproduction and balance is simply worth it.

but people are saying it's not so great for movies.
Who ? (if we exclude BeHardware)
I know you've commented on the twinkling already
Well ... I have commented the pixel pitch and honestly I have strong stand here (as I already explained in my comments about the BeHardware review and in my global review). Now, if someone can "enlighten" me about the "twinkling" I would be more that nappy ;)

but I'm just being really careful before I spend £400 ;)
Of course. You should be careful, indeed.

Would be nice if someone could directly compare the NEC with the Philips, but who has the money to buy them both? :D
I'm sure that Philips is a nice panel ... especially if it's based on the IPS (but it's still not confirmed and we simply don't know). Also, it's £60 cheaper and price difference is not the major one. Maybe it's unfair that I comment the price difference on your behalf, because for some of you maybe £60 is a lot. For me, major NEC advantages are Advanced DVM, amazing gaming performance, implementation of the latest LG.Philips panel, 0 backlight & colour bleed, impeccable colours, great design and, of course, better engineering. Somehow, it has "stronger" all around package and it's based on the latest technology.

I think that some of the forum users (here) already purchased this monitor. It would be probably interesting for you to see what they have to say.

Mine shipped today - should get it from couriers 10am tomorrow - when I'm at work - and so will collect it after 6pm, fingers crossed - but it does seem to be the best panel around - and as always, you get what you pay for.

I looked at all the other 20"ers - and apart from the new/unreleased 1 or 2 viewsonics and dell - about which nobody knows yet - this is by far the best picture quality panel out there, maybe not the fastest, but its close enough. If there had been a fast/high-quality/reasonably-priced 22-24" out, I'd have probably gone with that, but there isnt - beyond maybe the dell (opinions vary) - but times will change - and we'll all be going 24" in a year when the 20" is the run of the mill as 17 going on 19 is at the moment.

Just to let people know I've received mine today and I must say I'm impressed coming from CTR to a W/S TFT seems weird :D whats a good thing to have the brightness @ cause its kinda hurting my eyes

Hopefully(fairly likely) there will pop up a good offer on this screen tomorrow or maybe even today :) . I'll be the first one to hit the order button ;) . If I'm lucky it would be at a bit over £400, which isn't too bad.

I bought mine today, and wow!

I've been using it for only a couple of hours and I'm staggered how good this is. My previous monitor was a superb Mitsubishi DiamondPro 930SB and I had previously put off the move to TFT because of response rates and the other issues. But times have changed and now theres no going back for me.

The monitor is pixel-perfect, no defects whatsoever. It is stupidly bright at default levels, but easily cured (my CRT eyes weren't prepared for such an assault). And I've now got lots of desk space!

If you currently have a CRT and are thinking of making the switch, you won't regret purchasing one of these beauties. :)

Glad that "transition" was smooth and enjoyable :) As I see, your previous monitor was 930SB, best CRT monitor ever manufactured imho. After that monitor, it's no wonder that people are very judgemental when considering the LCD technology ;)

I received this screen today and im very happy with it.

For those interested on how it is on the 360, I fired up pg3 and the kameo demo and gaming performace was excellent, with expansion mode the game fills the whole monitor, didn't notice any issues at all no ghosting banding etc.

The only issue with the 360 is the 720p trailers when watching them in expansion mode to full you notice artifacts think this is due to the scaling and the video compression.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but the monitor has a button for selecting what input to display so you can have your pc and 360 running and switch between them at the push of a button.

As mention the screen is bright but some adjusting and its fine.

Happy so far gona do some more tinkering with the settings.

I couldn't agree with you more.....I'd been holding out on the move from my DiamondPro 930SB as well. Originally, I'd settled on waiting for the VX2022, but I'd always been worried about dead pixels and backlight bleed etc.

When I first saw the NEC appear on OcUK and looked at the spec, I searched the forums and read Igors review (by the way - excellent review Igor and very much appreciated!) and desperately wanted one.

It arrived on Wednesday and I'm over the moon with it, not only for getting the desk space back, but I love the design too - thin bezel and widescreen looks really cool.

The first thing I checked for was dead pixels (don't we all....) and with my fingers crossed, ran Dead Pixel buddy and finished with a big grin on my face...no dead pixels at all (which I'm hoping will stay that way). My only concern initially was on a totally black background, I could see backlight bleed on the bottom left corner and top right of the screen and I was gutted, but I'm really pleased to say that this must have just been the movement in shipping because the following morning and since, it has been perfectly black with no evidence of backlight bleed whatsoever.

The reflection doesn't bother me at all. You can only really see it when the screen is off or dark and if the room is fairly well lit. Under normal use (web browsing, working, gaming etc) on light backgrounds - even with light sources in the room, I can't see it at all. On black screens or borders on films, I can see a reflection if I try to look for it, but the picture and colour quality are worth it and I mostly use mine in dim ambient light anyway.

The only thing I noticed when I played a DVD was in dark areas (in this case the spider cave on LOTR: ROTK), was an odd effect on areas of the floor that I suppose is the 'twinkling' effect mentioned on BeHardware's review, but to be fair, I haven't ever watched films on a TFT monitor before and apart from some minor adjustments (such as lowering the incredible brightness from it's default), I haven't really changed many of the settings, so this may be normal for a TFT.

Overall though, I'm really pleased with this monitor and glad I went for a widescreen and I'd like to thank Igor again for all of his time and effort that convinced me to get this monitor.

Hi there

Are you all buying these from OcUK?

Unfortunately we can't do any special offers because at the moment our demand is higher than supply.
