NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

The NEC runs at a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, will my 6800GT's be enough to run most games at this res? My main game (at the moment) is BF2 and I run it maxed out on the highest settings.

Any ideas?

You will NOT be able to run it maxed out(at least not bf2 and bf2:sf). When I get the screen I'm going to check out how it is with my x1800xt 512mb PE :)

Mine is lovely - quite a lot of backlight bleed on dark screens - only on the left hand side - top/bottom corners - there was some on the right, but reset to factory defaults and its now only on the left. Will see if its noticable after a time or that its just I'm just looking for it atm.

You're telling me that a single extra tenner for delivery means you have to wait a few weeks? Wow...

Its a tough decision - I've been there in the past as have others I know - foor or computer bits/nappies or beer/women or ...

Budgeting is tough, but all have to do it at sometime or other - when you hit the limit, you hit it. Still, rather than postage, there could be bus/coach fare from wherever to stoke...

That's interesting. If it turns out that backlight bleed is a possibility, I think I'll end up going with the Philips instead. Lack of physical imperfections was the reason I was thinking of breaking my 400 budget and going for the NEC. If it's not a given - although in fairness you're the first person to report bleeding of any kind - then my budget sense will have to win out. At least I'll have some money left over to eat afterwards ;)

MIne had backlight bleed when I 1st started up but after coming home from work ( 4 hours ) all was well.

No time to type a detailed review ........ games to play and drop my jaw at...... just to say this monitor is excellent, highly recommended !!!

Hi,

Not much free time lately. I had opportunity tonight for a quick look how the thread is progressing ;)

I see that some of you experienced unfortunate backlight problems. So strange. When I powered on the monitor for first time, panel uniformity was just perfect and there was no single trace of the backlight. This is very interesting:

I could see backlight bleed on the bottom left corner and top right of the screen and I was gutted, but I'm really pleased to say that this must have just been the movement in shipping because the following morning and since, it has been perfectly black with no evidence of backlight bleed whatsoever.
It sounds like self-healing?! or something of the panel and it's rather interesting, indeed. Maybe you should just wait for the monitor to "burn in" or simply try to power off/on when it's not used or used ... just for the beginning. If this is related to shipping movement, I'm simply unable to confirm as such information is also new to me. I still didn't received any "confirmed" complains about the backlight bleeding from other users around. Also, is the backlight bleeding present when the monitor is only @ crazy 100% brightness ? Did you try to decrease the brightness to comfortable levels and verify if there is any improvement ? Anyhow, we will wait for other users and see how it goes. Generally speaking, it's known rule that any LCD monitor can suffer from slight backlight problems ... and this can be related to the slight disposition of the CCFL backlight during the manufacturing process or that light source is somewhere on the panel not properly masked or just uneven construction of the panel itself. Question is how much is too much, what percentage of the units are affected and if such problem will fade away after the monitor burn in (as reported by BigChin1).

Good luck ! :) ... and may the force be with you.

Probably something to do with temperature affecting the TFT panel itself and maybe backlight. Retailers and delivery couriers just have freezing cold warehouses!
Well, it's general rule of thumb that electronic equipment should "acclimatize" in the working ambient temperature before powering on. It's quite cold in the UK last couple of days. I remember that when I bought mine it was rather warm on contrary :)

LOL, its all speculation, if you theory is right then the problem should disappear within minutes of turning it on since it'll warm up every second its on.
Well ... not exactly. I have witnessed numerous hardware faults (as I worked many years in computer parts trading) when equipment was powered on immediately from the "cold start", as it was brought from the freezing temperatures outside.

Also, how much time monitor really needs to warm up or "burn in" ?

Never mind. It's not important and there is no point that we elaborate this matter to such extent as it's simply not going anywhere. However, for me it's surprising fact that backlight was gone for good (for some users here) and definitely there is no presence of the constant time pattern after the monitor was "cured".

I cannot see it when theres lots of stuff on the desktop - or now in daylight (when the reflections get more noticable) - I suspect I'll leave it - certainly for a time to see if it goes away - as unless you're looking for it - and with all the threads here/elsewhere about quality problems on lcd's - and will monitor (pun not intended) the situation.

I didnt notice it when I first powered it on - when I had a black background on my desktop (I'd been checking out my old LCD) and there is something about allowing 20 minutes warming up for optimal performance in the manual.

Given its newness and out-of-the-box settings I maybe able to play with some of the settings, but at present its hardly noticable.

I had an 12-18 month old viewsonic vx910 before this and that was great - but also had some backlight problems - but they were evenly across the panel. I prefer this screen given the 4 or 5 hours of use its had.

Got mine today.. love it! Everything is sooo much sharper and crisper than my old CRT's. Even though it has just as much vertical screen space as my 19" crt, its quite low down, so feels smaller for some odd reason.. its not tho.

Need to get a stand for it. Thats my only criticism. The DV modes work great.. Currently just got it on out the box settings with some Digital Vibrance on to up the colour depth a bit.. Looks well good..

Cant see any dead pixels soo far.. played some CS:S in 1680x1050 mode.. looks awesome.. Very slight twinkling effect on things like leaves n stuff. Whereas on a crt that would all be blurred together it aint on a TFT.. so high frequency stuff looks a bit noisy... easily solved with some Transparency AA.. I reckon I'm gonna have to upgrade me vid card for these kinda resolutions :)

Very happy with it.. :)

After a good sesion with this monitor im seriously considering returning it, dont get me wrong gaming etc was awsome but im finding the glossy reflective screen to overpowering, think it might be the way my room is set up but the reflection of the screen is very anoying even after changing the lights in my room its still an issue :(

Hmm.. well if you got a lot of lights in your room you will get that.. I have curtains closed, theres light still coming through and on a black background I can still see my reflection.

On anything but a black screen its unoticable tho.. so I put a backdrop picture on.

Taken from the AnandTech forums:

Some photos of the glossy screen, which I'm getting pretty dubious about:

That looks pretty bad.

Whats all this talk on AnandTech about the NEC being a 6-bit panel?
He gets corrected at some point in the thread.

[edit: Raymond means they were talking about it being a 6-bit panel, I think :)]
