NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

What's the rate of dead pixels on these? Wondering whether to pay the extra and go for a dead pixel check from elsewhere...

Mine came with one lazy pixel (green) but has the light bleed problem on the bottom top right and top left. I wouldnt worry too much about dead pixels wouldn't waste ** cash on a check to then have a light bleed issue.

I ordered one of these bad-boys this afternoon, hope I get a good one. After reading through this thread I was starting to get worried.

Oooh it's like Christmas come early. Roll on tomorrow :D

wow - I do have to admit NEC's customer service is excellent - my screen stopped working sunday - rang them monday 2PM, new TFT arrived tuesday 2PM!

The newer one (albiet from the serial number its older than my knackered one!) thankfully has no dead pixels (my main worry) - but suffers from bleed in the bottom left. Reported this to NEC so they are waiting on a response from Japan labs - heres hoping the bleeding will dissapear after a couple of days of use and doesnt get worse like the last one.

Bleeding or no bleeding - I can honestly state - this is my best investment to date - no regrets - the picture is just awesome!.

Don't let the bleed issue concern you if your after a new TFT - this one should be on the top of your list :)

I just ordered mine so with all the bank holidays and the weekend it should be here Tuesday, which is cool. I am now very poor but oh well I would have only spent it on beer otherwise lol

I hope I get a good one I will try and post some pic's and maybe even another review when I get it next week. :D

WOW

Mine just came and... Im lost for words. It's fantastic!

Im just giving it a quick look over to make sure there's no imperfections (cos im a fussy bugger), but so far it appears perfect.

Happy

edit : WARNING: When trying this lcd out on CS, be sure to turn your brightness down BEFORE someone flash bangs you. I still haven't got all my vision back yet :D

I really want to order this monitor to replace my old NEC 1760NX, but I know if it had just a single dead pixel I'd be annoyed because I'm such a fussy bugger. Hmm, what to do!

I take it my 6800GT should have enough oomph to drive the resolution ok in games such as Far Cry, Half Life 2 and WOW without stuttering too much?

Andy.

Ordered mine yesterday, got it this morning. Just fired it up for the first time. A little backlight bleed in the lower left corner but I'll see how it goes over easter. One thing I'm slightly more concerned about is the flickering - its almost like interference. Its only really visible on a black background when I ramp the contrast up. I haven't started to play around with the settings much yet so it may be that something needs to be tweaked. I'm running it through VGA although my graphics card needs an adapter as it has 2 dvi sockets. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Also, the colours seem very washed out - anything I can do about this?

Andy, it's not so frequent case that this monitor is suffering from dead pixels. Actually, it's very isolated and I think that only few users were so unlucky to receive one with the dead pixel.

It's difficult to tell what you should do, if the dead pixel fear is on the paranoid level ;) Anyhow, seriously, I wouldn't think about it to such extent. Even if you are *so* unlucky, replacement is very straightforward.

1680x1050 is demanding ... even for the latest GPU cards. However, resolution scaling is excellent on this monitor and you should be able to play the games even in lower resolutions properly. In some sense, LCD monitor is the long term purchasing option and you will probably change your GPU during the next major refresh cycle. In other words, LCD monitor will always follow your GPU nicely ;)

Hmmm ... I don't remember any flickering or interference ... even with the inreased contrast over 50%. It shouldn't be there, really.

Why don't you try the DVI ports ?

Colours are far away from washed out on this screen. Cause of the combined problem of the flickering and washed out colours may quite possibly lead to the cable problem,VGA port or just your GPU (from the hardware point of view). I don't think it's driver, software or monitor settings related. It may be the monitor itself also ... and I know that this is the latest thing you want to hear or discover ;)

Thanks igors - tried it with DVI and the colours are much better plus the wierd flickering has gone. However I'm still not 100% happy with this monitor. Maybe its the jump from CRT to TFT and I haven't got used to it yet but I was expecting to be a bit more impressed with this screen than I am. The widescreen aspect is nice and the colours vibrant but I'm not convinced its £400 better than my old CRT. I'll play with it over the weekend and see how I feel next week. Maybe its just my eyes :D

Does take a little getting used to when you switch from using a CRT to a TFT. I know as i have just done so. Even so, you should notice a big improvement in clarity of picture, vibrant colours and crisp text. I know i have. I have a different TFT though.

I ahve a gt6800 and play all the games you mentioned above and they play plenty fine. Its running on an a64 3500 2 gig corsair memory and a winfast 6800gt.

No fear mate plays a treat.

Just a quick update. Been playing around with my new toy all evening and I have to say I was a little hasty in dismissing this monitor. I think the jump from CRT scared my eyes but, having adjusted, I've now started to appreciate the colour and clarity of this screen. Gaming on this monitor is great. Unfortunately I've got some nasty backlight bleed and, while I'm enjoying the widescreen aspect, I really would like a few more inches. Having researched widescreen monitors for a while before deciding on this one it doesn't seem like there are any bigger WS tfts that are as good for gaming. Am I wrong?

I have this monitor connected through VGA as I am using onboard gfx at the moment. I am also suffering from flickering quite regularly, almost as if the screen is auto adjusting all the time!!!!! Should I contact NEC for rma?

Next best monitor is the DELL 2405FPW. The NEC does have a slightly better picture quality and faster response time so its all down to what you preferre. For me the DELL wins it as those extra 4" make quite a difference. :)

The flickering you mention I have had on both monitors i have had, it only happens through the VGA and not at all through the DVI, happened with both the xbox 360 and PC via VGA connected. I also had wavy lines through VGA with both monitors but nothing at all wrong with DVI.

This monitor is *gorgeous*, the reflective screen looks really nice, I can't see any backlight bleed, one dead pixel that I can hardly see, and I don't notice any ghosting. Worth the money without a doubt. I recommend it to anyone else with too much money burning a hole in their pocket. :D
It honestly has the same viewing angles as my old CRT as well. Colours are a little off in the default config though, I'll sort that out later.
