NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

I'm going to arrange for the return of my monitor on thursday 27th, and hopefully they'll send me one that can display black as black and not some white/green/black swirlyness.

I'll have to give NEC a call tomorrow to ensure Its ok to return and for them to send me a new one.

Has any one had any problems with the new ones they've received ?

Cheers,

Guys, I think that you really should try to swap your monitors ... as I already mentioned above. You have definitely nothing to loose, it's straightforward process and you may even ask for the pre-check before they send you the replacements. Apart from the fact that I have the perfect panel, it really annoys me that you are still in the same, unfortunate, position. Come on, what type of answer takes 3 weeks to arrive and I doubt that they will send the DIY fixing instructions for the panel or even if they shift the refreshed stock who knows when it will arrive in UK. In other words, simply not sure how that Japan answer may affect you ?! NEC UK is probably distributing the stock around, as we speak, and I really really doubt that this thing is global.

thanks igors could you look please try this ?
set my picture as bg and reset monitor to defaults. (again  )

Switch between native mode and standard mode.? with advanced DV OFF,
do you notice that the screen deiplays a different amount of colours ?
can others report on this?.
LaRz, not exactly sure what is the task :( How do you mean switch from the native to standard mode ?! There is only one native mode for colours and again only one "standard" DV monitor profile.

Mine has the bleed problem as well as stuck pixels. Logged a call to NEC a few weeks back which I must say was a very pain free affair. Spoke to a chap named Mike who was very friendly and helpful.
Just received a call from Sarah explaining that a solution is very close.
After dealing with NEC I can honestly say their level of customer service is amongst the highest I've encoutered in a long while. My initial dissapointment is long gone - this monitor is definitely worth the wait.

Just got a call from Sarah as well, as Bryfiero has mentioned the level of customer support is excellent, regular updates and the customer is being put first. Big thanks to NEC and roll on another couple of weeks.

Then, I take my words (from the above) back. Anyhow, yes it's great to hear that after sales service is great.

I'm seriously tempted to have my next LCD TV, based on the enhanced S-IPS technology, to complement the NEC LCD monitor ;) Essentially, LG.Philips is using the same NEC AS-IPS panel technology for the next generation of the HD-LCD TV panels. Take a look, it's a interesting read:

Apart from the fact that document is mostly addressing the LCD TV aspects, you may find many interesting details about the development and essential advantages of the IPS panel technology.

Igors I was suggesting SWITCHING from "native" colour mode to mode "1" which is at 9300k colour mode.

this is done under all in the standard profile!

Assuming the monitor has been reset to default factory settings, you will notice, that Native mode has Less issues holding subtle changes in blue tones in my picture. Whilst at mode 1 there is noticeble colour banding on my image. The blues gradient in the picture doesn't always hold uniform, dipping slightly towards green within steps of blue tones right across the gradient.

I can't really write that any simpler, I don't want to put people off buying this panel as I think it's still a great panel. However it would be nice to have someone see this from my point of view.
Perhaps someone else who does colour critical work could comment?.

Thanks Muchly

LaRZ

Yes, you are right ... I noticed the same "subtle" change. However as I mentioned already I'm not quite exactly sure if this is related to the fact how gradients are reacting to the colour temperate change or something else is involved. I tried several times how standard RGB/CMYK colour gradients are reacting to the changes in each profile and I was pleased with the results.

No worries LaRZ, each of us is unique and each of has it's own perceptions & expectations even when we are discussing the monitors ;)

I remember that Arcaine is also involved in colour, so if he is around he may possibly try to help you here.

I'm seriously considering this as an upgrade to my Sony G500 CRT...

Thanks for all the effort on this thread, igors, but may I ask Baddass what his opinion on this monitor is ?

I use my PC mainly for office work / with some gfx stuff and gaming occasionally. I rarely watch movies.

Would be good to know if I'm right in thinking this is the one for me...

Cheers!

Hi there. Firstly, I haven't had chance to use this screen first hand so far, but I can certa8inly summarise for you what I have heard from many users, as well as reviews spread across the net. The NEC is certainly a fantastic screen and igors has done a very good job of reviewing it in this thread :) He is certainly in an excellent position to answer questions about it and it's performance.

From what I've seen about this screen, there are only two issues which seem to get a mention. Igors and I have discussed this in another thread and i admit these issues are not necessarily major problems, and manye people might not find them a problem. However, they do pop up a fair amount and are worth a mention.

The main draw back of the TFT itself to SOME people is the OptiClear coating. The screen is pretty reflective and to some users, this isn't desirable. Lighting conditions play a big part here, but it can make it difficult in dark scenes in movies and games particularly. Probably not an issue to you though since you don't really use the screen for these uses.

The main drawback of the panel technology being used (AS-IPS) is the movie playback. Twinkling and noise in movies is pretty bad and this is perhaps the main thing which comes up a lot in comparisons with this screen and others. Again, not an issues to some especially if you just watchf rom a distance, but worthy of noting

Anyway, i think it is a very good screen, for office use and graphics it should be perfectly good. I suppose you might be able to save a bit of money with some other models, but the only possible thing which might put you off is the reflective nature of the OptiClear coating. Maybe worth trying to see a similar screen in the flesh? I personally dont like the reflective screens, including Acer's, Sony's and NEC's efforts, but some people do prefer them. All down to taste

Thanks for that, Baddass.

I think I've pretty much decided to place an order for one of these. I am concerned about the reflectiveness, but I'm just going to have to try it. It will be fine during the day, I should imagine, but at night it could be a problem due to the bright ceiling lights I have. I guess I could just get a desk lamp if it's a problem though.

Thanks again (and to igors) :)

Badbum,

I am sitting right next to a window and please trust me when I say the reflection really isnt an issua. I am a VERY fussy bugger and if it was a problem I would be the first to have a moan. The only time its noticeable is when the screen is all-black and you have a light-source directly behind you... which isn't often to be honest.

Just checked tftcentral and was amused to see my comment on there... maybe there's something from my review that you added to the "review your TFT" thread that you could use instead seeing as that is written after i've spent far more time witn it.

Cheers mate,

Rich. :)

I have a Window right behind me and I don’t have a problem at all I think its the height and angle I am sitting at but I love this screen worth every penny. :D

Richdog and Bobmunkhouse, i appreciate your comments, and that's why i did say it only bothers some people. Richdog, i know how long it took you to find a TFT you wanted and how fussy you are and if the reflectiveness is ok for you, then i'm sure it is perfectly fine for the majority of users :p It's just one niggle which seems to crop up a fair bit so wanted to make it known in this thread as well. I'll get some info added from your user review post instead of the early comments on the guide in question :) thanks

Could anyone with this TFT provide me with the DVI cable length? Some TFTs come with pathetically short cables, only suited for those that keep a PC on their desk.
