NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

Ive had this monitor about 4 weeks now.

Backlight bleed is still there in the 4 corners - It is very very slight now - If I look for it when say watching a film (because of the black widescreen borders) then I can spot it. It has definately got better over the weeks.

The monitor doesn't feel as 'vibrant' as everyone seems to be saying it is. Maybe I haven't got it setup correctly? Could people post their contrast/brightness/any other options?

Overall I'm really pleased with it - For the money it is excellent.

Yeah I would like to check if I have mine set up correctly as well at the moment I have it set to -

Contrast @ 50%
Brightness @ 50%
Advanced DVM is ON

Can some of you guys post your set up so I can check if I have it set up right?

I am very happy with this monitor by the way but I would just like to check

Thanks

What is everybody else using to clean their screen - I know the official line is a soft cloth which is fine for gerenal dust, but over time it's going to need more than that. I love my screen to bits (even with the backlight bleed) and I don't want to damage the screen with TFT cleaners on the market without knowing if they're safe.

Any suggestions would be appreciated....

Any superfine microfibre cloth (and sometimes slightly moist if you have smears) will do the job nicely. Don't use standard lint free cloths as they are no go for this type of the screen. If you have Sainsbury, Waitrose ... etc supermarkets around you may look for the "Spontex Window Wonder" microfibre cloth. It's very good.My personal preference is KlearScreen:

and UK dealers:

Thanks very much for all the info igor - it's really appreciated. BTW - It was your original review that convinced me to buy this screen. I liked the look of it when it was first announced and nearly did one of my "impulse buy" specials, but at the price, i thought better of it. Like you, I couldn't find any info anywhere and then 2 days later your review appeared and that was enough for me - i ordered it straight away and haven't regretted it once. :D

It's also been nice to see such an active thread and following everybodys excitement when they ordered theirs and saw them for the first time......and to find out I wasn't alone with the backlight bleed, (but we won't mention that :p )!

What happened to all those people who were waiting for their monitors to be replaced by NEC only to be told to sit tight and wait for the NEC guys to resolve the backlight bleeding issue? Are these people still waiting? Have NEC fixed the backlight bleeding issue which they said was being investigated a few months back??

Any updates on this would be greatly appreciated.

Still waiting! :(

I noticed that this monitor is out of stock for many weeks now at OCUK. Is this the product recall from the current stock and they are waiting for the refreshed one from NEC ? Second explanation is that supply is higher then demand. Can't think of anything else. If the NEC managed to sort out the problems with the backlight bleeding, that would be superb ... especially if the panel uniformity is the same as on my review monitor.

Backlight bleed is important aspect of the LCD screens. If LCD panel uniformity is not good, monitor itself is simply unable to expose the full potential and that may include the colour richness, contrast and colours uniformity (and in this case even calibration can't help you much). Look at my pictures (from the review) of the monitor in the dark:

I was hugely surprised how come that panel is so uniform and without any single trace of the visible backlight. I never witnessed this on other LCD monitors, which I had pleasure to see and test. When you combine this and the fact that with the Advanced DVM monitor backlight is dimmed even more, this must be the best LCD panel in existence when you consider the black luminosity. Also, we know that NEC warranty also includes the backlight bleed free panel state so it may quite possibly happen that this monitor is not design to have this "side effect".

I sincerely hope that panel uniformity of the new units will be on the same or similar level.

Igors, still no news from NEC on the fix. 2 months in and still no resolution from Japan. That light bleed various user to user but from i know is always bottom left corner and top right.

Flash like lightening (Dramatic pause) NEC strike again.... Judas Priest these guys are fast. Just got off the blower to a very helpful chap and chapess, organised delivery of my new NEC for wednesday - according to Siggy theyve changed somehting (hope its now pink instead of grey :D).

Keep an eye on ** phones folks seems the light at the tunnel is finally here....

Will give an update on my new monitor as soon as its unpacked.

I thought this issue of backlight was fixed yonks ago? Is it still a case of hit and miss?

I noticed that most places dont have stock? Are they all waiting for a batch of 'updated' monitors?

Just dont wanna splash the cash if i should wait for a fix!

Thanks guys :D

Just rang NEC Customer Support, the sales guy I spoke to was stupid and he seemed to think that they havent ever released the 20WGX2 in UK and that it will be a available at the end of the month. I assume this will be the new batch of monitors. When i told him several stores have had them available since February/March and that a lot of people have already bought them he seemed to suggest that they must have bought them from aboard.

I then spoke to someone called Sarah (from the warranty/repair service) and she mentioned that there has been a change in the manufacturing process for the monitor and that the backlight bleeding should be fixed and will be shipped out to those waiting for a replacement.

I guess I will just have a wait a little big longer it seems to just buy a damn friggen LCD.

Icemansin, for your information, I have been doing some digging on this model for stock in the UK and Overclockers have received some units today, so try them first!

The only time its available is the only time i cant afford it...TYPICAL!

So the ones OCUK are now stocking are confirmed to be the ones that have the updated part(s) that have fixed the back light bleed?

*EDIT* WOO 1000th POST :D !!!!!!111one
