NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

Hi, I am running this monitor at 1680x1050 and cannot select different expansion modes. When I select Expansion Mode in the OSD a message pops up saying see users guide!!!!!!!!!

I am trying to disable expansion mode as for some games I want to run say 1280x1024 at correct aspect ratio with black borders. Please help.

Thanks.

wait until you actually run something in 1280x1024 for example and THEN select which expansion mode you want :)

Yes, you are right ... I noticed the same "subtle" change. However as I mentioned already I'm not quite exactly sure if this is related to the fact how gradients are reacting to the colour temperate change or something else is involved. I tried several times how standard RGB/CMYK colour gradients are reacting to the changes in each profile and I was pleased with the results.

Many Thanks Igors :) I was hoping someone would just see what I had seen. You see in this respect my Dell 2005fpw is better at rendering these gradients at 9300k and the screen surface sands help it even more so to further blend out the gradient whilst adding a sparkle to high detail.

However this NEC is very smooth and cleaner in colour and perhaps is one of the most honest renditions of a PC's output I've yet seen. It's is by far the sharpest TFT widescreens I've seen so far at this DPI. Even each pixel has a sharp edge and even cornors are clearly defined. the 20wgx2 is slightly darker than my Dell 2005fpw in doing a full screen of black and is also more uniform, (after a weeks warmup).

I'd say this monitor is perfect for people who have been waiting for a smoother transition from CRT to TFT
No motion blur !, very little afterglow, great viewing angles, only falling subtley short on colour @ 9300k, I use it for gaming and browsing and I'm finding my Hauppage DTV card gives a great picture for TV :D

I'd still rather use my Dell 2005fpw in photoshop, but that could all change if NEC perhaps released a better colour profile to suit 9300k users ? and DID i mention I want one of these in Black ;) ?

Many thanks again Igors your all your help m8 :)

I'm looking to buy one of these when it's back in stock. The monitor will have to be delivered to me at work.

Do you guys know if the box come with a nice handle?

Nah, the box has no handle on the top. There are a couple of handholds at either end but they aren't that great for carrying ;)

I'm getting impatient for this already.

I love how it says 1-3 days to be back in stock on the site, but actually they don't know when they'll have them in.

:(

Does a 360 look good on this monitor its the only thing holding me back from buying a 360 :D whats the resolution used 720p?

You can use a standard VGA input for the xbox 360 on any reasonable monitor. Xbox 360 also has options for wide screen as well so would be good with a monitor like this, my son has his on a basic tft and looks very

720 = 1280x720 res ;)

Just got mine - pleased with it :)

It's got one dead pixel though :( I'm not going to get a replacement for that am I? Will it go away?

Seems to have a bit of screen bleed too, but i guess that'll settle down.

Reflectiveness is not much more than my G500 really.

Awesome.

Great. Glad to hear that :)

If you definitely have dead (dark) pixel and if it's not visible during the normal usage and you have to look hard to find it on the screen (usually when using DPT or any plain colour background) ... honestly I wouldn't bother. If you are *really* annoyed you may ask NEC for the replacement and this is usually straightforward process. Probability for the dead pixel recovery is really marginal. Lazy/stuck sub pixels - there is a possibilty.

Just had a flashback. Actually, I used to live with two dark lines of the Diamondtron CRT aperture grill for a long time ... and that's like 2 independent rows of 1680 dead/dark pixels :D

Just give it a few days to settle down.

Yes. Actually, when the screen is on, illumination of the panel itself is minimising the reflections. Noticed that many times other reviews around are showing the reflections when the monitor is *off* and that's pretty much irrelevant imho.

Cheers Igors

The pixel is bright red - so I don't know if that means its stuck or dead or what? Its quite annoying me now though - I'm considering contacting NEC as the backlight bleed hasn't improved too much either.

Whats the best way to test the backlight bleed?

I noticed it was quite light in the bottom left corner whilst loading CounterStrike yesterday. I've had it running for a few days now...

Dead pixels on IPS panels are usually dark/black. Is that read pixel visible on the black background ? If yes, this is stuck/lazy pixel and it may happen that you "revive" it by using the dead pixel tester/buddy or similar programs. They are rapidly changing the major working colours of the pixel and sometimes such approach may bring them to life. Of course, success is not guaranteed.

With the environment lights off and with the uniform-black monitor background you should be able to observe the backlight bleeding properly.

It is red - and yes, mainly viewable on a black background, but I can see it all the time. It just sticks out like a sore thumb on darker backgrounds. Where can I get this program?

This is my first TFT, so I'm not sure about these sorts of things ;)

Turning the environment lights off? How? lol :)
