NEC MultiSync EA231WMi-BK

I only got around to building the PC this weekend so haven't had much time to play around yet, I installed Crysis whilst benching so had a quick run through and it looks great.

I'm waiting for a display port cable to arrive as it's supposedly possible to force it to run it at 1080p at 83hz without skipping frames.

Hopefully it'll turn up tomorrow then i'll get the calibrater on it and post some pics and results.

I calibrated last night using the Eye one Match software and Gretag calibrator. As expected the colours were way off at default but to be honest, they still looked pretty good. I need to play some more as I've introduced some very mild banding into some gradients now it's calibrated, again though, you really have to be looking for it, i'm pleased overall but i'll try again and see if I can get it better.

The one issue i'm having though, is display port. I can't get a signal to my 5850 crossfire setup through it. I get "no signal" as soon as it's connected, tried to set it via the OSD but no go. Another user I spoke to is not having a problem with a single card so i'm wondering if it's crossfire?

I also mounted it onto an ergotron mx, will try and get some pics up later.

The Display port issue I had was a duff cable, Display port is working in crossfire perfectly now. Apparently the mild banding was something to do with my not using the correct "tile" to set my white point when calibrating, I'll redo that tonight.

Excuse the mess, still waiting for the case to be finished.

If any one is interested here are the full range of pics of my NEC EA231wmi.

I will simply say that this is an amazing monitor. I bought this monitor off reviews of other peoples positive experiences on HardForum and I can honestly say that they were right. Everything about this monitor is good. This is THE general purpose monitor ATM IMHO. Perfectly suited for image/photo editing for those on a budget or as a secondary monitor (average deltaE of 0.34 /max 0.87 calibrated with 0.15 black level and 125 cd/m2 luminance). Great for gaming (even hardcore FPS though there is some lag.
Uniformity unlike the Dell U2410 is almost a non-issue (mine had some green tint on the right). However very little discernible temperature difference across the screen. Backlight is good (not perfect but good).
Build and design are standouts (simply superb).
Much less grainy than the Dell U2410. Still some grain but perfectly useable and a non-issue.
This monitor receives my unswerving recommendation
If you need a monitor ATM I would not hesitate with this monitor. Just buy it and try it out for yourself. Barring receiving a DUD with bad uniformity (it CAN and has happened the panel is made by LG Display after all)
you will not be disappointed. This guy

seems to agree with me (along with most others on HardForum). Consensus is that this is a VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT monitor ATM.

As I have already said I REALLY like my new NEC EA231wmi. :D

Please be aware that my camera handling skills (and my camera) are by no means exemplary and may unintentionally enhance perceived defects

Calibration in sRGB. Perfectly accurate out of the box factory settings for general use

For color critical work the monitor performs even better when calibrated:

Will post more pics in due course. I also intend to calibrate with another program to verify/validate my results.

Have you tried any HD content on it out of interest?

No. This is my next goal. I want to test responsiveness and lag and movie watching.
I have never tested for lag though and not sure how to go about it (ToastyX has covered this on HardForum anyway I think).
The monitor is not really suitable for hardcore FPS but is satisfactory in this regard.

I am definitely itching to play some HD movies though and test how good the black is, dithering etc. Though I do not believe this monitor has any reports of dithering unlike the Dell U2410.

Have more pics to post but can't ATM. Also itching to calibrate with another program to validate as Prad's review seems to indicate the colors were way off on their sample. Not what I experienced though and I think its because they recieved a DUFF sample (bad uniformity/colour temperature across the screen).

Check out other peoples impressions though on other forums. They will convince you further. I am just one voice.
I will say I never thought NEC could be this good.:)

I've found it every bit as responsive for gaming as the 20" GX2 I used to own before it, it's been excellent in LFD2, ToastyX on [H] managed to force the refresh rate to 82hz via display port, unfortunately I can't do that as I'm running 5850 crossfire (unsupported by control strip) and I can't find anything else that will change the refresh rate.

1080p through VLC has been perfect. I have to agree with HowzThat, it really is a fantastic monitor, I was initially worried about the 16:9 thing but now I've got it I couldn't care less.

Here's mine after a run through with a Gretag Eye one and Colour Match.

Gutted i gave in on this monitor after OcUK never stocked them, ended up going for a 32" TV but this review has tempted me once again!!

They are readily available in Europe. Especially in Italy and Germany. Many shops from these countries do deliver to UK and even further abroad (I am in Australia - we get such poor quality monitors here it is not funny). :o

I imported from this company www.computeruniverse.net.
Brilliant customer service (answered all my qustions promptly). On time delivery (for such a long way anyway). Package delivered in good condition. They are a German company though so you will have to get it delivered if you are from UK.
They ship througout the entire world though (to my knowledge) - Australia is very far away :D so I had to pay a bit for shipping :D - But worth it in the end ;)

unfortunately I can't do that as I'm running 5850 crossfire
@Arcane:
Sorry for double post but where??? did you manage to get not 1 but 2 5850's.

You lucky son of a!!:D:D

I really need one now considering the NEC is 1920x1080.
My 8800GT is struggling to keep up at that res in some games at MAX settings (even MED).
Perfectly adequate for my 1680x1050 res TN (I am so happy to be rid of this monitor) but no longer. :(

But alas....5850 is out of stock everywhere (especially with stores that ship to Australia - i refuse to pay the small market extortionate prices in Australia - $450$-500 for a 5850 no thanks).

EDIT:
I was initially worried about the 16:9 thing but now I've got it I couldn't care less.

Yes its not really a big deal for me either 16:9 and 16:10 is much of a muchness (especially for games/movie watching). Missing the extra height only for photo editing and the web.
Would have loved an extra inch though! Would have been even closer to a perfect monitor then!

Great review, (I got the best results using the native setting as well). I noticed this monitor also got a 90%, Premium Grade rating in this months custom PC. Funny that it's not getting much attention, it's such a great piece of kit.
