Need for Speed: Shift 2: Unleashed

Drifting is an absolute piece of ****e, the physics of hitting other cars is really ****ing me off with not really appopriate is it? suggest you read the rules AIs clipping of the centre of your car and you spinning off.

Apart from that thoroughly enjoying it.

feel exactly the same fella! annoying aint it!

Just ordered this myself, was not going to pay full price for it but at £14.98 with free delivery it was just too good to pass by.
Easy to find btw if others out there want it and it's the limited edition too :)

Rename the SHIFT2U.exe to AFR-friendlyD3D.exe

I went from 40 fps to 90.

If I try that I get:-

HEADRAT

Has the AA been sorted yet for the ATI card. coz no matter what i do, i can't get full AA to work!! to much Jagged lines
Cheers.

Forcing from CCC causes problems afaik, so stick with the in-game aa for the moment as it works quite well, although it drops your fps by around 50% atm.

Imho ATi's MLAA doesn't do quite as good a job, but still drops your fps by the same level.

There is different cpu-based MLAA coming in the next patch apparently, which should offer the same visual quality with minimal fps loss.

I imagine that you'll need a quick triple / quad core to take advantage of it though.

What about ATI Xfire ;)

Try using RadeonPro.

Create a profile for Shift 2. Set the launcher to 'Steam', select the ' d3d friendly afr ' crossfire profile & see if that helps ?

If it doesn't then you'll need to wait on ATi getting their finger out to update the CAP's for a patched Shift 2.

I think the game can very good in parts, but the drifting is massively, massively annoying and yes, collision detection where you go flying off the road if you clip another car needs sorting out.

I think the drifting is actually fine. You've just got to make sure you set it to manual in the options before doing any drift events if you use auto gears.

That way you can stick it in third and power over instead of messing about with the handbrake. At least that's the way I prefer to do it anyway. Works fine for me. If you leave it in auto the gears are constantly changing and it makes it impossible to maintain a drift.

Is that with a controller or wheel?

With a controller for me. Although I assume it will have the same effect if your using a wheel with auto gears.

Problem is from what I can tell is that the code that selects gears for you is simply doing it based on true speed. So you can be doing a massive burnout round a tight bend and your speed will drop causing it to change down. That stops the wheels spinning for a short time that messes up the car balance and obviously slows down the rotation of the wheels when they get going again.

Doing it in manual is all about the right gear selection. 4th for the bigger corners like the oval tracks, 3rd for almost everything else, 2nd for super tight stuff. Also there's the fact that if you do the super long drift events your tyres will overheat before the end and explode. So to get a proper score you need to stop for a bit and let the tyres cool.

Why they left the standard gear selection and tyre temperature code in for drifting is beyond me....

The gears are not the issue when drifting, well yes they will be if you use auto but i rekon most will be using manual.

The problem is mainly the steering, as I have said many times when using a controller the drifting is easy because the game counter steers for you to a certain extent, hence easy to drift.

Throttle control is also seems dumbed down on the controller rather than with pedals which makes drifting even harder.

With a wheel its a total different ball game, there is no auto counter steer just you and the wheel, making the steering lock a small amount like 200 degrees has helped me a bit but I still can't drift well. If I plug my controller in I am a drift god!!
