I just wanted to drop my 2 pence worth in, I have played Shift 2 now a few hours over a couple of days and I must say I strangely disagree with most of the comments about the handling. I say strangely because I hated Shift 1 with a passion, due to the complete arcade handling. I had high hopes that Shift 2 was going to be fixed and so far I am pleasantly surprised. Its not perfect (Yet) but I am really enjoying it.
I say this as a amateur sim racer, having dabbled with iRacing for a while (Don't get the time to play to warrant paying subscription charges anymore) and a long time racer of rFactor. So I do not say this with no sim racing experience. I am no pro but I do ok.
Yes the physics are different from iRacing etc. There feels like much more grip in Shift 2 but not too much that its unrealisitc. I always felt like iRacing had too little grip. Too much like 1 mph over the perfect corner speed and you were under steering off into the gravel, Shift 2 is a little more forgiving while still having understeer when you get a corner wrong.
I can however only comment on Elite Mode as that's all I have used since the 2nd race. All aids off, no best line, manual H-Box gears & manual clutch using a G25.
I am in the process of tweaking the FFB setting to try and get a better feel as I do think the FFB is lacking quite a lot. Rumble strips feel good but the direct feedback from the wheels during corners and loss of traction under acceleration & braking is poor at the moment.
I am also using the Helmet cam without any major complaints except that with the wheel setup that I have I can not manually move the camera left or right to see whats around me, like on the Xbox 360 controller. I can set it up to use the buttons on the G25 shifter but its not something you want to be reaching for during a race. I am hoping that the game will get Track IR support at some point, but EA seem to be determined not to as they think it will reduce the effect that the default helmet cam has. Either that or I am hoping someone could develop some kind of head tracking using the Xbox Kinect sensor, that would be cool.
a lot of people seem to be still complaining about the cars feeling light and floaty and I am struggling to agree. Unless this is a game pad issue or silly people trying to use the keyboard to drive. Using the wheel the car feels good, now its good but not perfect and I can only comment on the very few cars I have driven so far, so no super cars or GT1 etc (except the GTR in the first race but that doesn't count hehe)
The AI so far are amazing, they seem to race reasonably fair from my experience so far, they move over to block the inside line when you are looking to make an out braking move before a corner, but they do not try to take you off, if you have a nose down the side they will look to block then back off, not saying they will do this 100% of the time but it feels like you are racing a real person in a way, they also make more natural mistakes rather than being perfect throughout the race.
A few disappointments I have found, when using the manual clutch you can not stall the car & therefor there is no ignition on/off & engine start sequence. Again not a deal breaker for me but extra touches like this could have made a big difference. Another issue is no qualify and no pitting, which could be a deal breaker for many sim racers out there, especially when the game includes FIA GT1 racing. I would have probably said this was a deal breaker for me but after playing it, I'm kind of seeing the game differently as to what I iRacing is etc. Its hard to explain really. My last annoyance so far is the silly American voices at the beginning and end of the races, its way over the top, Oh and it would have been nice to have some decent radio chatter during the race to tell you if you get a problem or puncture etc. As you can see there are quite a few problems but some how I still love it. Don't ask me how!
Without going on too much, I would like to finish by saying if you drive the car right, brake right, steer smoothly, accelerate smoothly and respect racing etiquette. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how good this game can be. Drive like an arcade racer and this game can feel like its lacking in physics but you would never drive a real race car like an arcade racer so why would you do it in the game.
And the other thing that bugs me is 99% of us will have never driven a car or race car around a track at full tilt. How do we really know what it feels like? I don't think we do? We just guess what you think it should feel like!
Would be nice to get some unbiased review from real racing drivers.
Final words to Sim Racers - Stick it in Elite mode, get a decent wheel, tweak FFB, drive smoothly!
Final words to NFS Underground/Hot Pursuit gamers - Don't bother with shift 2 if you do, don't moan when you can't control the car! Hopefully you won't have a real driving license to terrorize real motorists, hehe
