^ Need for Speed Shift ^

Releasing a demo weeks after release always sets alarm bells ringing for me

I agree (though they were working on the PC version very late, I believe). But I've still not cancelled my pre-order because -- and only because -- any game/sim with the Nordschleife deserves support. :-)

I've also seen a superb movie of a race there, from someone in the States. It looks absolutely amazing on a high quality movie. (I'd share the link but I don't want to kill his personal webspace.)

Simming 1st impressions have been very mixed though, so I'm not expecting to be entertained for long. My sim-radar is flashing big red warning signs, but somehow I still can't bring myself to cancel it... assuming I still have time to do so, which is debatable.

That audi steering looks well off, he turns the wheel 1/2 way for light corners but 1/2+10 degrees for tight corners!
How do they work that out?!?!

Nice vids.

Better than Grid and GTR2?

i think you have assumed that ive made those vids ? i wish i had but the games not unlocked for me yet :(

it probably is off.. like some people already mentioned game pad has problems and wheel looks off so i guess it need fiddling with settings to get it right.. :/ few weeks more for demo? wtf..

So how do I fix the XBOX360 controller problem?

You don't know that there is a 360 controller problem until you try it....

Wow, it's awful haha. I don't like the handling too much.. much prefer grid.

Grid is hardly a bastion of realistic handling now is it? Let's not diss it too much without having first hand knowledge.

for those who have bought the game how about some online private races on friday night ?

Obviously we'll need to see how this can be setup and if theres any options to add friends ingame etc etc

been waiting for a good arcadey racer never liked grid :( so hopefully this and dirt 2 dont suck . why theres no demo really does stink and makes me think it is crap.

oh come on Will, based on a series of screenshots and a couple of lo-res youtube vids, does everyone here prefer NFSS or GRid???

So what's everyones preference? Grid or NFSS?

I prefer neither. Grid had good sense of speed but the handling was pretty mild and lacking weight distribution, weight in general and all those other little things that makes a driving game good.

Shift has *some* of those elements in it. Acceleration and braking is pretty good in Shift but when you turn, that's when the trouble starts. The tracks are WAAAY too slippery, you end up sliding half the track if you want to go fast. Turning into corners nearly always forces you into a slide, very controlled slide but very unrealistic slide. The handling is also very restless even with a wheel, speed sensitivity turned to 0% and plenty of racing experience. The handling lacks finesse and feeling. Also the force feedback effects are partially, well, missing causing even more trouble with trying to simply feel the car. In both games it's very hard to feel the car, something that is very much present with other (and in my opinion better) games like the GTR series, GTL or even the dreaded iRacing.

I think iRacing is much easier to drive than Shift. In iRacing the car drives, feels and reacts like you expect it to. In Shift you have to un-learn everything you know about cars in real life and just act against your instinct. I'm not against arcade racing, not at all, but Shift feels *wrong* as opposed to arcade. Dirt 1 felt wrong too, but Dirt 2 feels just right. Another good example is Flatout and Flatout 2, both feel *right* while still being arcade games. Rally Trophy feels right too and that's close to 10 years old now.

Having said all that, many people think Shift is the best racing game ever made and that's their opinion. I don't understand it but it's not like they understand me either. I guess it comes down to personal preference - I like to think I know how cars drive and I want that reality based feeling from my racing games. Some people just want racing *games*. And that's what Shift is.
