Netflix here we go again.

Hmm well that was what Netflix was at the start.

IMO people moved for the combination of price and user friendliness.

As I said earlier today, for the same sort of price as a couple of DVD rentals from Blockbuster, or a 3x at home DVD rental by post subscription you got a service that :
was on demand with no limitations.
was equivalent to many times as much content.
had a better range than pervious services.
whilst subscription based was no long term commitment.

Since then its slowly been whittled away at, whilst the other services have started to think they would be better off getting more of the pie themselves.
Netflix has never offered all content available everywhere. It’s always been a curated list.

Welcome to the world of capitalism, where the aim is to increase profits and growth.

But not quite same.
As there is a high bar of entry to games consoles (console itself)

More like steam/epic
I would argue that the lifetime cost of any subscription is worse than buying all three major consoles

It's £250 to £400 for a console. You could buy second hand at £150 ish and be fine. These per subscriptions are £150 a year now so they really not that far in terms of high bar to entry and if you want all the content with consoles you looking at Xbox, playstation, switch as example. Second hand is £660 or new is £900. Now they one of costs and you get content for 7 years with them before next console drops.

Content TV wise then as yearly. I've only looked at major subscription services in UK.
Disney+ £79.90
Paramount+ £83.88
Netflix £131.88
Prime £95
NowTV (use that for sky content) £167.88
Apple TV £83.88
Lions gate+ £71.88

Yearly that is £714.30, over 7 years that's £5k. So relative console gaming is significantly less, even in a year that a solid cost

Surely you figures are wrong as consoles are a 1 off purchase. Even doing all 3 premium tiers across the consoles must come to about 200 for the year.

Sorry did you mean a one off cost of 900 or yearly? I do think people are going to go down the drop in/out route. I'm surprised Netflix don't do a similar thing to prime/Disney where its cheaper to pay for a year rather than monthly.

1 off cost for £900 then so £900 vs £5000 is what you need to consider when you compare having all content on consoles (major UK options) to that of wanting all content on TV (did not include sky sports via Now mind which would be another £120 a year on that cost then if that your thing.

And once again. Just read on MSE about Netflix dropping their basic plan, madness.

Can't see myself ever bothering with a long sub again now. I've no other streaming services either.

At least if you're on it you can keep it.
Although that's quite clever as you can't dip in and out and get it back

Tricky situation really, on one hand they do produce some decent stuff now and again which needs funding, but with these constant moves they're driving more and more people to piracy which in turn will affect their revenue and thereby their ability to create more shows, resulting in them needing to find ways to raise their income, which will feed the pirates too.

If I were them I'd take the company private and undo all the nonsense moves they've made recently, their slow demise is due to shareholders expecting constant growth, and it's simply not sustainable.

Just a heads up for anyone using Netflix downloads for entertainment while traveling abroad. I went to the US this weekend. Before I left the UK I downloaded a lot of content onto my phone and tablet for the flight. Flying out was no issue. But, flying back from the US, Netflix had marked a lot of the content as unavailable in my region despite having downloaded the content in the UK. To fix it I had to connect to a UK VPN before getting on the plane. That's a poor show from Netflix for already downloaded content which I would expect to work for a few days wherever I was.

If travelling with downloaded content then make sure you have access to a VPN.

I thought that was the case already, quite annoying, usually try and leave my ipad on airplane mode for the whole trip.

Tbh I don't know what you get at each level. It was on a US podcast and they were saying it's maybe $7 ad supported, $10 is now gone, £14 is the lowest ad free. They suggested maybe the $7 gets bumped to $10 in time, which actually I wouldn't be surprised to see happen.
Cheers.

I'm on two screens for £10.99 @ 1080p - if they decide to add adverts to that, i'll not be moving up a tier, they'll just lose my sporadic business over the year.

Basic with Adverts offers all the features people expect from Netflix’s Basic plan, with a few differences:

  • What stays the same: A wide variety of great TV series and films; personalised viewing experience; available on a wide range of TV and mobile devices; change or cancel your plan at any time.
  • What’s different: Video quality up to 720p/HD (now for both our Basic with Adverts and Basic plans); average of 4 to 5 minutes of adverts per hour; a limited number of films and TV series won't be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on; no ability to download titles.

It's £5, £11 and £16. Source: their website.

With CoL forcing me to trim outgoings to equal good savings, £5 plus other savings adds up. If i'm going to sub, it'll be the £11 package, but i won't leave it running. Part reason i cancelled a year ago was due to lack of content. So i'm happy to pay if they can supply me it. £16 package for myself gives me nothing extra..

I assume if there were programs with a licence in the USA then it would let you watch those?

I actually don't watch a lot of stuff off streaming services, watch a lot more sport than anything else but it does add up.

We got rid of Sky a few years ago because it was "expensive" and to be fair the full package with sport/movies, etc is the days.
We pay £15 a month for the top Netflix package, Now TV and Amazon Prime (although I tend to think of the TV aspect of Prime as an extra as I use the Prime Delivery a lot).

Disney + is an odd one, I seem to get given free 12 months subs like confetti, Samsung seem to hand them out all the time

At some point these streaming services are going to collapse if they keep pumping up prices, especially now.

Then they will blame piracy blah blah and not admit they screwed themselves.
