I think they are IPS not VA, VA ones are 200Mhz

the 35" FALD utlrawide equivalents (X35 from Acer and PG35VQ from Asus) are VA technology panels with 200Hz refresh rate, 3440 x 1440 resolution, 512-zone FALD backlight

Few pages back was criticised when wrote that DP 1.4 is not capable to provide true HDR and colours at 120/144 hz making those monitors very expensive for what they do.
Here is today article from Guru3d.

The monitors compress the colours at high res to 4:2:2
4:4:4 only at 60hz.

Whoever wrote that is a dolt. The monitor does 4K @ 120 Hz at 4:4:4 just fine. The only Chroma-sub sampling drop to 4:2:2 is at 144 Hz.

Guru3d is not the first to report the drop at 96 Hz. Is that just down to using a substandard cable?

This is just like when 4k monitors first launched and were forced to use the MST method as a bit of a bodge ie For early adopters only.

You are right! **** so they will go from an x34p IPS to a x35 VA ? they have already the z35 that is VA, what the hell are they thinking?

VA panels have distinct strengths, particularly when it comes to contrast. Take it from somebody with considerable experience of HDR monitors including 384 zone FALD IPS-types.. Even with a multi-hundred zone FALD, VA offers a superior contrast experience in HDR. They handle inctricate mixtures of light and dark a lot better and unlike IPS-types do not tend to have issues with 'glow' or halos. Admittedly I have not yet used a VA FALD solution, but based on what I have already seen with VA HDR solutions that use far fewer dimming zones, I have no doubt it will offer a superior HDR contrast experience.

That isn't to say that FALD IPS-types don't offer a really awesome HDR experience. Just don't be fooled into thinking there is no advantage to using a VA panel in HDR.

So it sounds like these monitors are not everything they're meant to be afterall! This compression confusion stuff; it only happens above 120hz right? Why not just sell them as 120hz monitors then?

You'll only get 98hz if you want all the bells and whistles as advertised (HDR and 4:4:4 Chroma).

EDIT: Actually that's a bit unfair as a lot of games don't use HDR, but still, the whole 4:4:4 120hz and 4:4:2 144hz does stink a little. Reminds me a bit of those 3.5 970's....

It's just an early version, that spec really needs DP 1.5/HDMI 2.1 to fulfil its potential.

What happens if the fan stops spinning? Does it catch fire with all those hot LEDs? At least you've got an option for warranty replacement rather than repair...

Or if it slowly starts to fill with dust. Blutac some tights to the back of the air intakes (classy). See what the reviews say.
