New 24" iMac 2.8Ghz Extreme - Ordered

Very nice indeed. Im tempted to get one with Leopard.

Can i ask, to play these HD movie do you have to have a digital copy on your HDD as the unit doesnt have a HD drive ?

Thanks

It's not 'screams', it's 'screamers'.

Core 2 Duo, these things are screamers.

Pentium 2, these things are screamers.

He also uses 'mere mortals' too.

Very nice PAC2007.

I ordered a non extreme 24" iMac on Sunday, should turn up by next Wednesday. Really looking forward to getting my hands on it. I might put some pictures up if I can ever stop playing with it.

Steam Counter Strike Stress Test...

Now these are with High settings, which the system recommended...That is also No AA and Trillinear

I ran the tests three times:

1024x768

1st: 186
2nd: 195
3rd: 196

1600x1200

1st: 108
2nd: 108
3rd: 107

What think?

:)

consistent >100 fps has to be good. To be honest after about 60fps I cant tell the difference anyway so as long as it doesn't dip below that it's all good :). When you watch the stress test do you notice any stuttering or lag?

Can you use CS:S @ 1920x1200?

I doubt it would be a steady 60fps, which wouldn't bare well if you were in an intense gun fight as it'd likely drop to 30s :(

On a side note: Anyone stress tested their MBPs?

Haven't had the chance yet, and am interested to see the 8000 GT series' performance.

Downloaded and installed 3DMark 03, 05 and 06

Also PCMark05

Now, since I'm using Vista I decided to run these programs in XP SP2 mode under the properties...

3DMark 03: 10,834

3DMark 05: Crashes (Tried reinstalling etc)

3DMark 06: 3820

and Finally PCMark 05: 6868

Hope this helps?

how will the iMac 2.8 Extreme handle Battlefield 2?

I played this a lot on my first imac (2.0GHz,2GB,x1600-256mb) with medium to high settings and a 1280x768 (or something similar). It played well and looked good!

No so down at all, I bet I could have pushed it more....but I just seemed to have hit the sweet spot and got playing.

I could have been on a custom built pc, except I was on a iMac lol. Couldnt believe it.

I will now try to get this installed next and updated, will post back soon.

PS? Does BF2 have a stress test at all?

I would be very surprised if the new iMacs couldn't run CS:S at a steady 60fps at 1920x1200. I've been doing it for 2 years with my Geforce 6800GT. Shurley the card that comes with the new iMacs out performs the 6800.

I pretty much gave up my gaming habit when I switched to Mac.

I'd love to install Windows on my MBP but with 90GB free I wouldn't have much space to play with!

Saying that, If I get an iMac I'll be happy to install Windows and CSS, BF2 (+2142) and all my other games :)

@PAC2007... Test CSS at 1920x1200, I'm interested in seeing the performance :D

Windows / Steam (Probably this) wont allow 1920x1200 - just 1600x1200...

Both (CSS & DODS) are set to this, decent enough...Now and again FPS can drop but still not bad.

I think I played BF2 at 1280x1024? It seems to ring a bell last time I played it on a iMac - Although I havent installed it yet on this computer.

All the source games can do 1920x1200 to my knowledge. I run them at this on my iMac.

Not really.

Its very unlikely the new iMac can run it at 1920x1200 full details at 60fps. Infact impossible I say :D

In CSS if you go to the screen format drop-down and change it from 4:3 to 16:10 you can then select 1920x1200 :)

That seems a bit rubbish that the new iMacs can't beat a graphics card thats over 2 years old. I don't run any Source games at full detail but it still runs silky smooth and at 1920x1200 you don't really need much AA.

Glad my next upgrade is going to be to a MBP with a Geforce 8800!

The macbook pro has an 8600 :)

I was severly disappointed at Apple's choice of gfx card in the new iMac's, especially considering the recent natter over gaming on Mac's, ID's Rage engine etc etc. They should really have had an 8600GT as standard in the high-end model, not a 2600Pro. I suppose it just means in 5 months time they'll offer a BTO with it or something.
