New 5870 - suspect may have been used/opened

If your card works as advertised i am another one not seeing the big issue here end of the day there can be a few valid reasons to open a box prior to shipping and all have been stated. Would i expect OcUK to admit to any of those hell no not with the attitude some seem to have seems to me they would be inviting a batch of returns for no good reason.

Way i see it is i am paying £300 to have the card untouched and for it to perform to what it is meant too anything over that in terms of oc'ing is a bonus and no one ever gaurantees an overclock. So bench it if it is hitting the speeds it is meant too at the temps it is meant to be at then you have what you paid for if it isn't doing that then rma it as i am sure OcUK would themselves say :).

to be honest i wouldn't worry about your gfx card overclock, they tend to only overclock 10-15% which isn't gonna net you that many fps. i'd be far more worried about getting a cpu expecting it to overclock and finding it only worked at or just over stock...and the box had been opened.

Imagine buying a i7 920 and it only doing stock...even with your Noctua...

...but they ALL do 4ghz though don't they, so need to worry there...

..same goes for 860s - at least i hope so when i buy one (crosses fingers).

I've worked in a place before where they went through all the stock, granted the place was awful and computer systems went walkies regular...

Theres lots of reasons though that the boxes could be opened, one no one else has thought of is a dodgy postman :p I'd guess if anything customs would be the offender, I've had lots of things checked through customs including a violin mute which was SUPPOSED to be so small it wouldn't get checked.

Personally though, if theres no visible signs of use (scratching on the copper connecters for example) then I'd be happy, a scratched disc means nothing, maybe it was dropped while being packed, maybe the machine scratched the disc, maybe the disc was damaged pre-use, who knows?

I can see where you're coming from, but to me if you can see its not been used then I can't see where the issue is, if you can see its clearly been used, well thats a different matter.

You really think people who work for ocuk [the tech team] have the time to check through cards to find the best one,
what with vast builds to get through a week, not to mention that I dont think anyone that works ocuk owns a 5870.
I think you are reading into it to much IMO.

correct

nobody in the tech team has a 5870, we are all still on 4890's/295s etc

all of us are waiting for the nvidia response

me personally, i am waiting for gen2 DX11 cards

we dont have the time to cherry pick hardware

now if you want an i7 920, i overclock around 60+ a week and could find you a good one.
but the only time we touch graphics cards is if we are installing them into a full system build

i am quite shocked that a card has reached a customer in an opened condition, definatly somethign i havent heard of before.

the best thing i can suggest from my point of view to help the OP out is the following:

post here in the customer support forum, make your thread with the title:

'rjkoneill, someone broke the seals on my 5870, help me out!!!'
and post your order number and a brief reminder of the key points in this thread

i will look into the issue and try to resolve it as best i can

once again, i can only apologise about this occurance and hope the OP sees this and is able to contact me via the support channels

When I first recieved my Sapphire 5870 only the left side sticker was hanging off, yesterday I looked again and both were hanging off... so either I have a poltergeist or the stickers Sapphire are using are coming loose by themselves.

OCUK missing a trick here, they could start doing a sideline in CSI forensic examination kits, so you could dust for prints or carry out hair folicle analysis, or worst case your new 5870 card might test positive for semen, I hear they are supposed to be good cards afterall.

Got my sapphire 5870 this morning and while both stickers were still on they were only just on and it took nothing for them to come off cleanly so bad stickers by the looks of it :).

it was the left one on mine too. batch of duff stickers i reckon

I am surprised and a bit shocked to read this thread.

You see I ordered a 5870 on Thursday 1st when I first read the notice that they had new stock arrive and they were available. The delivery went fine and arrived at my office at 9.45 the following morning (2nd).

At 11:32 Friday morning (2nd) I registered my complaint in the OCK custumer services part of this forum to state. The seals on one end of the box had been opened, there was no seal on any part of the Graphics card bag and that the instalation disk envelope was open with scratches on the driver instalation disk consistant with it having already been used.

Sounds very familar.

I updated that post on Monday 5th at 11:42 asking if any one from customer services read the forums (the thead has been looked at 8 times now, obviously not all by me). Thank fully at 14:22 yesterday some one did reply (just noticed it now) and I will be getting the info he needs later today.

No idea what I can do though. The card is in the machine now, it is the card I wanted and ordered. The first part of a major upgrade for me. But it has left a bit of a sour note on what should have been a very exciting purchase . I will now wait to see what comments come back to me before I decide how much more of the upgrade goes through OCUK. The last thing I want is a machine full of other peoples returns or items some how interfeared with.

One of mine was the same, sticker hanging off, thumb print on the card. Clocks to over 1000MHz.

I could care less if it had been out. Don't think it had been used anyway, no dust or marks. I'd expect a speck or two of dust in the fan if it had. Not sure about the connectors though, I'd hope the board was tested at some point.

I'm the OP. The problem is I haven't been able to try my card yet as still waiting on parts. And when I find an opened box, and an opened/scratched driver cd in a tatty envelope, and a card in some anti-static bubble wrap unsealed, I thought something might have been up. I think this is reasonable, and I posted to find out peoples experiences. Since then it seems bar the opened/scratched driver cd a lot are in the same boat as me which is a relief. Therefore I think this post was worth it to find out. I hope to have my rig built by the weekend so will know if it works for sure then.

mine was the same

everything was inside as it should be and all works fine.

i dont see the problem ?

i think the problem is the fact some are experiencing signs that the box has been opened and card touched/used.

personaly i haven't opened my driver cd as i downloaded the drivers off the net beforehand.

I would have said the slightly later ones were better, at least for crossfire. Earlier ones had issues for me with idle clocks.
