New 8800 GTS price + info

might hold out for one of theese new GTS cards, i was very tempted by the gt but im using a 24 inch monitor now, and at 1920x1200 they might not be a great choice, my current 8800 gts 640 0c 1 aint to bad, (just use less aa, cut a few details down, or use 1-1 mapping) but if this new gts delivers ultra performance, i have a few hundred quid saved for a new card plus whatever i can get for my current one id be more than happy

Hope there is lots of these cards available on release though, not like the 8800 GT where it's next to none and every place has added £30 on top of the RRP because of their availability. Still, £240 would be okay on the price. Ideally a little lower but see how that one turns out. If it's closer to £300 then I'd rather have dual 3870's or even dual 8800 GT's if you can get them cheaper.

I cant work this out (maybe being daft)

if the new GTS is above the old Ultra in performance, new GTX and Ultra will be pretty close to the natural performance of a new generation (without any new gizmo's /add-ons)

Now while I know the new GT is a very impressive card for the price (esp once quantity arrives) its not equivelant to an old GTS or GTX by any means is it?

Surely that leaves a huge performance gap in the market? (Ie there doesnt seem to be any card in performance terms between an old GTS at best and an old Ultra - unless marketed OC cards come out in the new GT range....(Im meaning on the new process of course, of course there will be "cheap" old fab GTX's for a time)

Any of that make sense and is my guesswork correct?

Price wise I would guess new GTS's may well for a time settle in the region between old GTX and Ultra (premium performance therefore premium price ) at least until new GTX / Ultra's come in

The GT's are great with a 24". I was playing COD4 last night with Everything On + 2X AA and it was superb.

From what I've seen you have that slightly wrong.

The GT is better than the current GTS and only slightly below the performance of the current GTX.

Anyone please feel free to correct me if I am wrong?

Correct!

Ultra > new GTS > GTX > GT > old GTS

New GTS will be very close to an Ultra, the reason I don't think it's going to beat it is Nvidia stated that no Ultra beating card from themselves would come out prior to the 9 series. But it can't be far off so I'd say somewhere in between the GTX and Ultra. The GTX and GT are near enough as close as the new GTS/Ultra will be. Old GTS is at the bottom of the stack.

Some more bits and bobs on the card:

A slight modification

pre-oc new GTS > Ultra > New GTS > GTX > GT/revised old GTS > old GTS

revised old GTS faster than GT in some games, slower in others and depends on res.

If high res then revised old GTS is faster than GT, lower res the other way round.

The most interesting thing is though just how small the gaps in performance is between cards.

ie New GT within 10% of a GTX
Ultra about 10% faster than a GTX (I think)
therfore new GTS is within that 10% gap making the gaps between cards only 5%

That's a lot of cards available across a 20% performance band.

If new GTS prices are right and even if we are ripped off over here or there is limited supply, the only certainty will be GTX and ULtra prices will have to drop.

GTX will have to be priced between a new GTS and a GT so around £200 mark or less.

Guess Ultra will just drop to around new GTS price or slightly above.

Good times for us consumers with fantastic price/performance ratios.

How will etailers shift stock of the GTX's and Ultras when these newer cards are better vfm? Do they hike the price of the GT/GTS in order to take a hit on the GTX & Ultras.....lets face it you would be crazy to buy an Ultra or GTX new+VAT (which annoys me!+VAT - just say the price all in!!)

It's only like the intel CPUs where there was the E6x00 range. now intel have the E6x50 range selling cheaper.... why bother buying the old range?

if the information about ROP's and SP's are correct i just cannot see this card being slower than an Ultra.

seeing how the GTX and Ultra are pretty much EOL now this makes sense.

i think this new GTS will be almost or as fast as 2 3870 in xfire in quite a lot of games for around the same price without the problems associated with multiple cards.

had my finger on the trigger for 2 3870's yesterday but i think i'll sit for another 2 weeks and see what pans out with this card, on paper it looks quite a lot stronger than the GT for not much extra moolah

not announced but they've effectively made them EOL, no-one in their right mind is going to purchase them ....especially once the G92 GTS is relsd Dec 3.

no-one knows about a new high end part, just rumours and speculation.

Personally I think we'll see another GTX in G92 form, although not an Ultra and instead there'll be the 8850 GX2 (probably 2x G92 GTS's).

Which is the same as they did to the old GTS with the launch of the current GT, although you could also argue that the GT has already made the GTX a pretty unattractive proposition from a value for money point of view

Seems like December 3rd is indeed the release, another news message on vr-zone confirms this.

*G92
*128SP
*Core : 650MHz,SP : 1625MHz
*256bit memory bus width
*GDDR3 @ 970MHz(effective 1940MHz)
*New black dual slot cooler
*Price : US$299~349
*Dec 3rd launch

so it seems it has a dual slot cooling , unlike the GT. :)

So if the 3rd December date is true, will OcUK have them for the 3rd and go on sale then, or will that be around the date they start getting dispatched to retailers?
