New Alienware Q3 2020

Yeah, sorry about that (actually missed that you had written the monitor version there at the end ! :o ). I owe the same card you do, just wanted to be 100% sure it does work before spending the money on buying said monitor. There is no official information that freesync is supported, hence wanted to make sure, especially with games, as in no tearing etc when playing. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated ! :)

No problem! :)

@uwait20 Thanks for posting that screen grab of your Display settings ! :)

Calibrated mine with a new spyderx pro, it's on 34% brightness iirc. It gave a lovely colour depth which is identical to the second panel. Was really impressed with the new spyderX it's really quick now it has a proper lense

Not the greatest picture for backlight bleed, I don't really know how to take one in the dark without the potato blowing the exposure out the park.

Oh and it's on the wall now thankfully.

Hi LOAM, you seem to be the only one that not using the stand (from the few pictures that have been posted at least) so I'm wondering if the VESA back mount is compatible with any monitor stand/arm, or does it only work with the wall mounting kit ??

I just used a generic wall mount that I was previously using to mount a Dell 3008. The specified weight requirements are over the top at 31kg when the panel only weighs 9kg with cables, I felt pretty confident about the arm as it had supported the 3008 fine and that weighs a ton in comparison. The arm I'm using is just a bog standard multi-vesa mount (200, 100,75) and uses bolt shims within the 100mm vesa mount on the back of the panel because the plate in slightly over 200mm

Similar to this without the extenders (but wasn't that actual one, i got it so long ago it's not listed on Amazon anymore)

Thanks for your replies. I already have a monitor arm I'm using for my present monitor, just wanted to make sure it would still work since the AW3821 instructions book did not really specify anything from what I saw.

Appreciate both your replies !! The only store that sell these over here sold two yesterday, so now I have to come to a decision before they sold out ! :o :p

Yeah it's pretty standard back there, 100x100mm vesa depression for the Dell stand plate. There's already 4 M4 bolts in the panel but they aren't long enough if you're not using a 100mm vesa mounting plate so you would need some longer ones. There's nothing out the ordinary back there though, see below.

can you use it to calibrate your TV as well

i have 2 Sonys and 1 Panny that i would like to calibrate

Hi All - My AW3821DW is due to be delivered soon.

Dell mentions that the following cables are provided by them:

Cables Included
  • 1 x DisplayPort cable - DisplayPort to DisplayPort
  • 1 x Mini DisplayPort cable - miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort
  • 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 upstream cable

Does anyone know how long the displayport cable is?

Thanks,
Sean

Not really. You need different equipment for that but with modern TVs 98% of what getting a tv professionally calibrates can be done with discs or online content,

https://www.audioholics.com/home-theater-calibration/hdtv-calibration

the pc calibrators could be connected up to a laptop and used to check readings from the TV but cant acutally auto calibrate them.

I've manage to get the AW3821DW and I have been happy with the size, looks, quietness and gaming performance, especially with G-SYNC. But one big problem I'm having with this monitor is eye-strain. I've calibrated the brightness down to 50cd/m2, switched eco mode off, use 125% scaling, variable backlight off and use one of the gamer presets, but to no avail. I use this monitor for work too, so using it all day, but my previous monitor, a DELL U2412M (and the various cheap HP monitors I have at work), I have absolutely no problems with using all day and zero eye strain.

I can't work out if I can't get on with the backlight technology LG are using with their nano-ips displays, if my eyes are just sensitive to the extra blue light these new monitors pump out, there is a fault with the monitor itself or something else.

Has anyone else experienced these issues before? As a last resort I'm thinking about buying some Gunnar Optiks.

Don't know. I have to set the scaling to 125% for high pixel density monitors but I am fine with that, and it works on the 3824DW In fact really 125% leaves things very slightly larger than your old monitor, so I don't think that's an issue here.

Are you covering the air vents for the fan?

No there's a tiny gap because of the shims and the gray surround is a few mm higher than the black plastic where the slots are.

There's barely any vent slots back there anyway, most are located on the vesa plate of the stand which just aesthetically link the top and bottom ones. Even they didn't look like vents as they aren't open, just slots in the plastic. The vents appear to be along the bottom and accross the top.

I received the monitor, there's some whiteish IPS glow in all 4 corners, though not severe and some light bleed in the lower and upper right regions. Again, not severe, but not perfect either. Also, my speakers are buzzing when I'm moving the mouse with this monitor and only this monitor which is very weird.

EDIT: Adaptive Sync seems to be broken on AMD cards (using a 5700XT, but I'm planning on getting an Nvidia card soon so I'm not bothered by that since it wasn't advertised as a FreeSync monitor). Sometimes, the fps just drops to 20 or 30 and the screen flickers and displays random black images. After further testing—going in exclusive fullscreen mode seems to fix this (?). Ok so it still flickers/gets black lines when the FPS reaches 12 and only 12. Above and bellow that it seems to be fine if it's in exclusive fullscreen and sometimes it's fine even in windowed fullscreen apparently. Basically, it's not 100% supported on AMD cards from what I'm seeing so far, but it works.

Interesting may give this a go. Been trying to find calibration settings online, but still not much available. Tempted to get some calibration hardware, suspect my TV could make use of it as well, but they aren't cheap and I don't plan on upgrading monitor or TV any time soon to use again.

Did you give this a go / did it help at all?

For me I gave up on calibration when I tried in the past to tame TN panels getting them as close to 'good' in Windows only to find that they would throw that out the window as soon as you loaded a game.

Not sure if that situation has changed in Windows 10 but I like to make adjustments in the monitor's OCD itself especially if you have multiple devices connected to the monitor.

Afternoon all.

For those of you that have the AW3821DW, I was just wondering if I could have some assistance, please. I have the 3420DW as well as the 3821DW. For whatever reason, I just cannot get the AW3821DW to look as good as the predecessor. Most of the pre-sets appear severely washed out, dark, and it is frankly not playable with them. Additionally, I have noticed that the panel is no where near as responsive as the predecessor as well. When you click the monitor button for the 34", it immediately brings up the menu and is instantly responsive when navigating and changing colours. The 38" however, appears delayed by about half a second or so, and you can see this when adjusting the picture as well. I have also noticed that if you select from the various pre-sets in game it starts to add what I can only describe as motion/ghosting image for about 5 seconds before the panel seems to catch up and go back to normal. I have also noticed that if you enable extreme mode on this panel, it is very jarring, and can even flicker. The 34" does not do this at all and offers significantly less ghosting.

Hi Everyone - I got the AW3821DW delivered yesterday! Just in time for Christmas..

I'm struggling to get the I/O Shield Cover at the back closed - Any tips with getting this sorted? Or do you'll just keep it open?

No, didn't have an issue. It clips in something like half an inch below it's final resting position and slides up. The most important thing to do is hold the cables out the way as you slide it up. But honestly I would have just left it off if I had an issue.
