New Alienware Q3 2020

Holy moly - my AW3821DW turned up today and wow it’s an amazing piece of kit!!! I had 3 different LG 4K 27GN950’s before this with different QC issues - this one is miles apart in terms of quality and image. Need to get used to the new aspect ratio - but loving it so far!!

Curious for those that say there is *no* blacklight bleed, how is that possible given how the panel is lit? surely there must be some unless Dell accidentally fit you an OLED panel?

Can anyone tell me what AWCC.Background.Server does? I quite often notice in my HW monitor that my cpu is running at 50C with 10% util and find that running. I kill the process and it goes down to 29c, seems like a bit ofg a resource hog.

All of this story just to say how I find it unbelievable that all of this is happening, when Dell actually went to great lengths with their premium warranty for a mere U2414H! I can only hope that nothing has changed since then, and it's just the bad period that is causing all of this.

Honestly my previous s2719dgf a few years back was a different story. My first had stuck pixel day one and was replaced within 2 days. Then the second had the same and was replaced again within 2 days. However my brand new display was replaced both times with one with 'dell certified refurbished' stickers on the base which was disappointing but atleast I was never without a display. My AW2521HF also came with a dead pixel that I returned and that was collected within 3 days and when promised.

Maybe it is a bad patch but at this point in time unless they offered me a large store credit to apologise I don't see myself using them in the forseeable future. Shame as the build quality is great, and the AW2721D is clearly one of (if not the best) 1440p monitors on the market right now, but of the 5 displays I've had from them in the last 2 years all but 1 has had a QC issue and that was a refurbished display. Coupled with the, to put it nicely, terrible customer service I've had this time I don't consider them worthy of my money going forward.

I just got an Alienware AW2721D monitor and am so far very pleased with it.

There is one problem I am having with it though. I am using an AMD 6800 and when I check to see if Freesync is working using the nVidia pendulum demo it is very stuttery even at high framerates. I have enabled the adaptive sync compatible toggle in the Radeon drivers.

The funny thing is that when I disable the adaptive sync compatible toggle the pendulum demo is very smooth at all framerates. Using the monitors built in FPS counter, it displays 240hz at all times.

What is going on?

I'd never heard of this demo so downloaded it to give it a go on my Aw38, it was stuttery on that with gsync on and off, with a 3080. I dont get that stutter in game, so could just be something with the demo?

Me too ! Tried this last night in my aw3821 and 3080 - but stuttery for me as well. https://www.testufo.com/gsync Works much better!

Thanks guys. Good to know.

Well it seems I have solved it somehow (touch wood).

I set the refresh rate from 240hz to 144hz to test to see if my displayport cable was not up to the job and it worked. Both the nVidia pendulum demo and the AMD windmill demo were smooth and my monitors framerate counter was going up and down in time with the FPS. I then switched back to 240hz and it still works and is smooth?!?

I have no idea how changing framerate to 144hz and back again would sort the problem? Very strange.

Just curious what other monitors people have come from to the AW3821DW? I’ve got a VA BenQ EX3501R which I’ve never been that happy with compared to my IPS Dell U3415W, so wondering if the Alienware will be a worthwhile upgrade.

My AW3821DW was supposed to arrive yesterday but it's still at the DHL depot, not arriving now until Monday.

Not bad as I only ordered it the week before Crimbo and it only shipped on the 29th.

Gives me extra time to spend exploring my G9 though, so far I am totally loving it.

With £100 off with an Amex and 20% off employee discount it seems that the 38" can be had for £940, which is tempting me.

I think I can get over the backlight issues but the remaining hurdle for me to get over is the colour saturation. How are people dealing with the lack of an sRGB mode? What's the best workaround for avoiding shonky colours in windows / non-HDR content?

I've whittled it down to the 38" version, the 27" version, or one of the 1080p 360hz ASUS beasts (the latter of which all seem to have excellent colour accuracy). Pick your poison and all that....

Your giving up on thinking of buying one of these mega monitors didn't very last long :D
Indeed - it’s difficult toying around between them. It’s about half the price of the mega Asus one so at this price point it’s more bearable. The 1080p 360hz is only slightly cheaper.

Still not convinced either way! :(

I’m all in for the FALD 27” 1440p whenever that arrives!

Would you really be happy with a 1080p 25" screen when you own a 3090 ?

Then again i can understand this if your really into fast MP FPS and can notice the difference with these really high refresh rates

I’m all in for the FALD 27” 1440p whenever that arrives!
If one does arrive check reviews for the response times between the FALD being enabled vs Disabled as am sure i seen a review on the PG35VQ where this effects the response times

I think I’ll end up going for one of the alienwares eventually if I can get to the bottom of this colour / sRGB issue.
Just hit that buy button now as your not going be happy till you do :D
Think how great games are going to look on this 38" screen and all that desktop work space you'll have ;)

They do look really great (not my picture or monitor taken from here I’ve ascended AW3821DW : ultrawidemasterrace (reddit.com))

Am not going to try talking you into buying one of these great looking monitors :D

:D

What monitor are you using now ?
None! Don’t have a PC yet.... just a crappy MacBook Pro that drives me beserk. Buying all my bits for a new build when I move house (hopefully next month) as the centrepiece for my new man pad. It’s an agonising wait looking at all the components sat in boxes. No room for a desk here unfortunately!

Have been dying to build a PC for years!
