New Alienware Q3 2020

Just ordered an AW2721D. The website was quoting £644 even with a discount code applied. I decided to phone up and ask if they could offer any discounts and the person I spoke to came back with £559.99. Yes please. Hopefully I get a good one.

Afternoon all.

For those of you that have the AW3821DW, I was just wondering if I could have some assistance, please. I have the 3420DW as well as the 3821DW. For whatever reason, I just cannot get the AW3821DW to look as good as the predecessor. Most of the pre-sets appear severely washed out, dark, and it is frankly not playable with them. Additionally, I have noticed that the panel is no where near as responsive as the predecessor as well. When you click the monitor button for the 34", it immediately brings up the menu and is instantly responsive when navigating and changing colours. The 38" however, appears delayed by about half a second or so, and you can see this when adjusting the picture as well. I have also noticed that if you select from the various pre-sets in game it starts to add what I can only describe as motion/ghosting image for about 5 seconds before the panel seems to catch up and go back to normal. I have also noticed that if you enable extreme mode on this panel, it is very jarring, and can even flicker. The 34" does not do this at all and offers significantly less ghosting.

If it helps you can try my calibrated profile?

Is this a fair summary relative to its competitors then?

Pros:

IPS
Gsync ultimate
Price (relatively low against competitors)

Cons:

Backlight bleed bottom of class and a lottery.

————-

Seems to have got a mixed response.

love my aw2721d so I can’t really comment but to your last point about bottom of class and a lottery I don’t think so, everyone seems to think that the small sample of owners on these forums are representative of the majority of owners and they aren’t.

it’s the same on camera forums, one person gets a bad sample and suddenly all the camera must be technically flawed, whereas in fact, 99.99% of owners aren’t actually posting on forums at all and have no issues at all.

I’m not saying that the less than 0.1% of owners with ‘bad copies’ shouldn’t complain, of course they should, but their voices are usually shouted loud from the rooftops for all to hear whereas happy owners just get on and don’t usually shout the equipments praises.

Hi everyone!

While I am looking forward to join you with the AW2721D I have ordered last week on the 22 Dec, I really can’t figure what’s happening with my shipment! The monitor was posted on the same day as the order, so the 22 Dec, Dell said delivery 24 Dec on their website but that was flawed as Syncreon was quite firm on saying ETA 30 Dec, which is today. Though there is nothing confirming I will be getting it today... I have got in touch with Dell yesterday and they knew nothing too, all they had to tell me is to wait till today if anything updates.

my tracking has looked like this so far:

27/12/20 09:16 PLAN COMMITTED NOTE.
27/12/20 09:02 PLAN COMMITTED NOTE.
24/12/20 14:08 TILBURG ORDER DISPATCHED FROM HUB.
24/12/20 13:22 TILBURG FIRST BOX SCANNED OUT OF HUB.
22/12/20 14:40 EMF DEPARTED MANU.FACILITY
22/12/20 14:13 TILBURG MERGE ITEMS PICKED.

Like all others tracking I would assume that it would at least say arrived in the UK! Is anybody else in the same boat as I?

edit: I have just received the delivery confirmation from Syncreon to the 05/01!?!? What the hell? 2 weeks for a single monitor to arrive, did they need time to manufacture it? This is utterly ridiculous

30/12/20 09:11 NO PRECALL 05/01/21 SCHEDULED DELIVERY DATE.

Thanks for this. Sensible point.

I find the high end of the monitor market a little frustrating. The cons of all of the competing monitors are not easily dismissed (price issues, performance issues, fan noise, poor QC).

There is always a risk of having a duff unit I suppose. Could be a gamble that pays off well!

For me personally this rings pretty true.
With my 20% discount through work I was able to get it for £556 which is a great price when you see what other monitors are available in that price range. The FI27Q-P for example costs around this price for 144hz, slower panel, comparatively large chin and (based on reviews) lesser build quality. GSync is flawless with this panel compared to GSync compatible too. I also had relatively low amount of IPS glow.
My sample of the AW2721D however had really bad back light bleed that was visible in game on even dull scenes not just the black screen test. Mine also came with a bright blue stuck pixel.

Unfortunately the issues have put me in a position where I doubt I will be buying from dell again. Bit of a long story so Ill try to make it as short as possible.
  • 29th November Order placed via chat rep (note that call back for the purchase after confirming I accept the quote was literally 2 or 3 minute
  • 2nd December Monitor arrived
  • 3rd December requested a replacement for the bright pixel that was confirmed to me by dell on that date.
  • 10th December I asked for an update on the replacement that went unanswered.
  • 13th December I got fed up of being ignored and not being updated so requested a refund as my 14 day return period ended on 16th December.
  • 14th get confirmation of return and a collection date of the 21st.
  • 21st comes and no collection. I write an email that again goes unanswered.
  • 24th I ring Dell and get told there was a 'technical fault with the collection' and they will rebook for the 29th. I get an email that night saying the collection is booked for the 4th January.
  • 28th I call again asking why and they said that the 29th collection was cancelled but they couldn't tell me why and it was rebooked for the 5th January. I said that was wrong as email said 4th January and the advisor said the email was wrong. At this point I asked to speak to a supervisor and was put on hold for 5 minutes. Was told supervisor was busy and I would get an email and a call back from the supervisor. No call back was received.
This morning I received an email confirming my collection date as the 5th of January and that I would get a call on my phone number on the day of collection from the courier, though somehow they have managed to put an 8 where there should be a 2 in my phone number. I cannot believe that I am 28 days on from receiving the monitor and have no monitor to use and £560 for dell to refund which I wont get until probably the 12th January (If the collection isn't cancelled or has another 'technical fault')

For such a large company with good warranty terms this whole experience has been negative. My last few displays have been Dell S series displays and never had this much trouble, yet I buy a premium £700 display and have to chase a collection and be ignored (though took literally minutes for responses when it came to them taking my money). I sent in a complaint email when my collection didn't happen on the 21st due to the lack of communication and surprise surprise haven't even had an acknowledgement of it. I appreciate Covid and Christmas can cause delays but the above is beyond acceptable when I can go to DPDs website and book a collection from my address for tomorrow morning right now.

It gets worse - I have had a broken New Dell 38 Alienware here for more then a month. It arrived faulty - No OSD - powers on and displays nothing on HDMI or DP. Nothing has been done. Phoned up multiple times and they said a replacement would be shipped. well one month later and nothing. Called up today 30th Dec - 30 days and they said the swap had been pending approval and was approved and then the ticket was closed on the 16th Dec and hence nothing has been sent out.........The new person dealing with it now assures me a swap will be done... Well who knows...

No mixed response from me, my AW38 is fully working for the last month, minimal if any backlight bleed. Only see updates to this thread because of email notifications but I'm turning those off now as no point continuing to read the thread as the only posts I'm really seeing now are those who got a faulty monitor or aren't happy with level of backlight bleed.

BLB is perfect on my AW38. Loving it so far,. Much more immersive than my old 16:9 screen and the gsync ultimate is the first time i have experienced a screen faster than 60hz.

That's unfortunate to hear. Its a shame because the monitor does so much right but going on a month without the monitor I paid money for (boxed it back up as soon as the replacement was confirmed to me), and no refund really just leaves a sour taste for me regarding the company as whole. I understand that some people will get faulty units due to manufacturing, that isn't my issue, my issue is that when someone does get a faulty unit it shouldn't be this hard to resolve.

I think that's my disappointment as well. A normal company should be able to resolve this quickly.

I hear all of these sad stories of Dell's support, which are extremely frustrating, and I feel sorry for all of you. Wish you good luck. My new AW2721D is taking 2 weeks to get delivered, so I don't want to imagine how long it would take now if I needed a replacement. Though I find it very curious.

I had a Dell U2414H a couple of years back which showed a screen defect after a year, same premium warranty I guess. I phoned them in the late afternoon on a Monday, like 4pm, to ask for a replacement, and to my surprise a couple of hours later I received a tracking for a delivery. But that wasn't what surprised me the most. I was still living in my parents' house back then, which is in a small town in the South of Italy that is normally serviced in 48 hours on nationwide deliveries. Well, the morning after I get a call from UPS to confirm a delivery time in the same day, as someone was going to drive directly to my house from the nearest airport (Dell used UPS Express Saver) depot, ~60 miles away, instead of the local UPS depot. Someone actually comes, with his personal car along with his girlfriend, and after dropping my package it even asked for a food place recommendation in the area as it was lunchtime! All of this trouble to get a not-a-very-big-deal U2414H replacement in less than 24 hours in a remote area.... and if it wasn't enough the monitor was posted from their depot in The Netherlands! As for the faulty monitor, they contacted me again 2 weeks later for the pick up, so they took it easy on that one...

All of this story just to say how I find it unbelievable that all of this is happening, when Dell actually went to great lengths with their premium warranty for a mere U2414H! I can only hope that nothing has changed since then, and it's just the bad period that is causing all of this.

So I have had my AW3821DW now for about 3 weeks and I can honestly say I love it. I don't seem to have any BLB or dodgy pixels it seems spot on to me.

My previous monitor the AW3420DW which has now been stolen by my son is also a superb monitor, however the AW38's Gsync definitely seems better to me, smoother maybe, however it may just be that the AW38 is 144hz as opposed to 120hz I don't know.

I do really enjoy the HDR though, I personally think it is superb in games such as COD Black Ops and makes a big difference to my eyes at least.

I have been using it primarily with an Nvidia 3090FE but today took delivery of a 6900XT as well. I can assure you that the VRR works really well on this monitor, I think it performs as good as Gsync does to be honest.

If I can run any tests or do anything to help you with your purchasing decisions then let me know. I for one am very happy with the AW38, it's a fantastic monitor.
