New Alienware Q3 2020

hopefully this thing is too big, bulky and niche for people to try scalping it

Yeah it's not a scalping target tbh, they usually go after smaller items plus it's not unique - there are already comparable 38" models available from other manufacturers.

Here is a decent review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df2NsnsYAdg

It doesn't show that much but the presentation of various local dimming modes is pretty interesting, compared to Rtings review of 38WN95C and some 38GN950 videos on the web it seems like it is much more responsive on Dell and actually dims to full black in Mode 0. It is still like 10-zone edge lit or something like that but still a massive upgrade over HDR400 which is just a global dimming and way more of a problem than feature. HDR600 implemented this was way can actually be used. Theoretically should be better for the price, but not quite so if you actually consider alternatives and compare to the rest of the desktop market instead of taking what should and shouldn't out of the hat.

The rest is going to be typical for 38" LG IPS panel which is top of the line as far as current ultrawide market goes.

I just hope that this G-sync fan is really not audible, like not only when you are deaf but actually, and that it doesn't have coil whine which could very easily happen with internal power supply. These are main concerns. And of course the price cannot be 1899 EUR, that's just over the line. 1399 would be perfect.

This on the TFT central article gives me hope that since they've updated the module slightly they tweaked the fan while they were at it:

1) there is a new updated G-sync module, adding support for a second HDMI 2.0 port alongside previous 1x DisplayPort 1.4 and 1x HDMI 2.0 options. Perhaps we will refer to this as the “v2b” module given it’s not a major step-change to the previous v2 module.

From the Reddit posts I've seen, most owners are saying the fan is nearly inaudible. Noise is subjective though, so will be interesting to see if this actually turns out to be the case (obviously not many people have the panel yet, but still).

I've been following AW3821DW posts on reddit and youtube, so far every owner says that the fan is extremely quiet and you have to put your ear on the vent to hear it. Screens like Acer X35 or LG 38GL950G had immediate reports of fan noise, though there were many who claimed it is quiet, so you know... But initial reports are promising. It is really ridiculous that we even have to worry about this, how inconsiderate you have to be to put a fan a display, this is just madness.

Yeah, tiny whiny fans should have been consigned to history years ago. I was disgusted when they made a reappearance on X570 boards, let alone monitors!

One thing I have noticed in these early reviews/previews/leaks is no mention of any overclocked refresh rates above the rated 144Hz, unless I'm much mistaken.

The equivalent LG model, which will be using the same panel, overclocks to 160Hz with no reduction in quality or even 175Hz if you want to put up with chroma subsampling.
Of course, whilst the panel will be capable of this, it's the G-Sync module that's responsible for the actual overclocking and the rumours of a "new" module combined with the lack of any mention of overclocked refresh rates has me worried this could be pinned at 144Hz only which isn't that big a jump over my current 120Hz 34".

Probably weaker fan is due to less bandwidth to process. 144hz vs 175hz... It's like running a CPU at 5.1Ghz vs 4.8Ghz - requires less voltage and outputs significantly less heat and so the fans spin less on the radiator.

wow... it seems the listing on the dell US site already has a massive discount on it

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/ali...1dw/apd/210-axvg/monitors-monitor-accessories

i know its black friday but the thing was only just released... it must not be selling well

well today is either a day of joy for UK customers or a day of disappointment... probably the latter

either way my debit card and discount code are ready..

As far as I can tell the listed them a week or two prior at way over the price they should have been, presumably so they can ‘discount’ them for the weekend. The price should be in the region it is now, take the AW2721D - £699 quoted in TFT Central, US price $1,099. I was already quoted £625 but told subsequently it wasn’t available to UK just yet.

Fairly standard Dell practice with all their stuff tbh - stupidly high MSRP and heavy discounts pretty much all the time to make things look cheaper.

They're like the DFS of computers :)

They're making it very hard for me to give them money...

They say anything about price?

No but I actually got a quote on the 2721D which was lower than the speculated £699. The sales rep thought I could order it but then learnt I wasn’t allowed... I’d imagine it’s held back until BF is done as there’s a 15% code on AW gear you could apply. Hoping the prices are as speculated on TFTC

Which discount code is this?

Which discount code is this?

Some Alienware discount for BF tiered based on spend 15 or 20% off i think over 699. Forget what it is but I saw it when browsing and that pretty well generates the discount given on the mistake quote I got give or take.

One of the great things about Dell, aside from their warranty/support, is that they *do* frequently have significant sales on their monitors. So I wouldnt read anything into about the 38" being on sale, aside from it being a good temporary deal.
