new car e39

Yes exactly - 500-800 quid! Big bill no?

And once you've pillaged the engine there is still plenty of bits and pieces left on a doner car that you can make money back on.

Don't get me wrong I do know that it is a failing argument - Not many people are going to put that sort of effort in to save a £1,200 car, but the point is engine wise at least they aren't as ridiculously expensive as some people make out.

No bit its a useful indicator of how much the car costs to run, no?

Not really when two parts of the bill were for what I'd consider consumables (Tyres and Shock Absorbers. Neither are likely to suddenly expire). The cooling system bill can be seen nothing but a plus in my eyes, especially seeing as how it is an issue for these cars.

How'd you work that one out? I'm just saying that an old car is an old car, its going to cost money to put right regardless of its manufacturer. May as well get a BMW over a Renault if you have the choice :)

Well no, not really - the e39 is a large, complicated car so costs large, complicated sums of money to maintain. A cheap small hatchback is small and basic, so costs a lot less to maintain....

Even replacing the shocks is a complete pain in the arse. Two new rear shocks sir? Certainly.

That'll be the entire rear interior which requires stripping before you can even begin to remove the shocks...

And remember, those of us in this thread all took our time and bought really well looked after, immaculate examples of these cars which were a lot newer. Do you think the situation will be improved when you buy one in the dark, giving it so little attention you dont even notice what model it is, thats 12 years old?

I suspect what he'll do is run it for a few months on knackered suspension or something, bodge anything that needs doing, move it on to some poor unsuspecting soul and claim triumphantly that his E39 'was well cheap to run'.

Don't really see the problem here - its £1200. What's the worst that'll happen? Chances are it'll be ok for best part of a year and thus provide cheap motoring. If not you could break it and make a lot of that back.

Admittedlty he has form for fail threads but for £1200 you can't go that wrong.

It's DannyW - famed for buying complete disasters. If you'd just bought it this thread would have gone a completely different way. Danny didnt even think to look what model it was so due diligence really isnt his thing.

look at all the beema boys out in force! :D

wouldn't be offended/embarrased that Mr W is now one of your motley crew would you guys? :D

just by the responce alone i hope it lasts you a long time danny :p (it won't, but still...)

I do not know a SINGLE E39 owner who has not had to replace most of the cooling system. Most of us have had to do the whole lot. It's crap. And then even the job of replacing it is a complete pain.

Never had anything done on mine
