New Dell IPS S2721DGF 165hz gaming monitor

There are superior gaming monitors incoming that are 1440p IPS 240hz - no doubt they will be a lot more expensive but also a better gaming panel. Here are at least 2 on the radar!

Alienware 27 Gaming Monitor AW2721D
Acer Predator XB273U GX
All the LG nano IPS panel monitors have great reviews on Rtings and Hardware Unboxed, to the extent that I'd not really recommend any other. However, if you want to get a good round-up, HU has just the video:

agreed the LG nano ips panels are good - that's why I ordered a Dell and still might even get the LG, they are good for the money - that doesn't mean that superior monitors arn't coming soon!
It's just if you wanna pay that extra price premium for them or not.

I like the look of the viewsonic elite xg270qg it has the same panel and some extra bit and bobs but its got a huge price increase over the Dell and LG, if it were the same price I would be getting that.

The problem I see with 200Hz+ monitors is that you really need a top end gpu to stay in the higher range and the response time probably drops when you are well below 200Hz.

Exactly.

And the overdrive modes that are best for the top-end frequencies are often not great when dropping below say 120Hz. So if you can't drive your games consistently at max refresh, and instead want to use VRR, then you can end up in a bit of a pickle.

Also I am horrified of the idea of buying a really expensive monitor, and then needing a really expensive GPU, and still having to turn down the settings in game just to keep the refresh up :p It's like, the worst of all worlds.

I guess the truly competitive eSports types might disagree. I'm a single-player gamer so it just baffles me :p

Ordered one, shipping date is 22 January though. Mine is the A model, the only change apparently is a new firmware with a reduced default brightness to comply with new EU energy regulations.

After going back and forth constantly, I think it might be best to get the LG now since its reasonably priced and readily available, then sell when the Alienware comes out and get that or it's competitors at the time... Although price will for sure be high, if you want the best, you need to shell out. I remember getting my ROG PG279Q 4 years ago! It was £720 then and still is one of the best IPS panels imo, as long as the lottery is with you.

There are some used examples floating about for £300-£350, but when you can get a brand new nano IPS monitor for less, it's a no brainer.

LG is also now out of stock at the Indian place now too ffs lol

PSA: if you receive your monitor, check the service tag on the monitor with the service tag on your invoice.
if they're different, you wont get any warranty service if needed.

i had to return my S2721DGFA because i got the monitor of another customer with an extended warranty (5 yrs) and he got mine.
the only solution, after talking to support, was to send back the monitor and get a refund without no replacement.

Ended up cancelling and getting the LG 27 GL850 yesterday, great monitor, better than I expected! Also on the Ps5 it says the resolution is displaying 2160P so don't know how that works if the monitor is 1440P? Well worth it anyway, wasn't waiting til January.

I expect your ps5 is downsampling from 4k to 1440p, better than upscaling 1080p to 1440p.

I did consider the LG version, but I didnt like the design of it, it was also out of stock, and want the line out.

I don't think the PS5 can down sample to 1440p, I think the monitor can do the down sampling from 4k, this is where the LG has an advantage over the Dell.

I recommend Rtings ICC profile for the 27GL850, as after comparing it with my partner's own SpyderX calibrated profile they're practically identical. It'll give warmer 6500K colour profile and then you can adjust for brightness (within a sensible range). My brightness is about 18-20 if I recall.

does it have better built in scaling then?

I would assume so as the PS5 can only output 1080p or 4k (the xbox can output 1440p)
Both monitor have to use scaling to display an output from the PS5, the Dell will upscale 1080p to 1440p and the LG will downscale 4k to 1440p.

It's a shame the dell can't accept a 4k signal.

That is really interesting. The PS5/PS4 will only output 4k if it believes the display to be 4k compatible, so that might give some reasoning as to why that is happening.

However a capture device is a workaround, I found out by accident when I brought my elgato hd60 s+ I was able to play ps4 pro games rendered at higher resolutions than 1080p. As in that case it sees the capture device as the display. Ff7 remake e.g. the text looked noticeably sharper in game when I switched the ps4 pro to 4k mode using the capture device as intermediate. If anyone does this make sure they get a device that does 4:4:4 passthrough, also this device I believe is limited to 4k60 not 4k120.

Yes the the PS5 can detect if the monitor can accept a 4k signal it doesn't care if that 4k signal will be downscaled.
A capture device is an interesting solution I didn't think of. Once it does not introduce much lag then it may be a good option for some.

Anyone able to get them down more recently? I tried 3 times and each time they said 390 is the best they can do. I can get it down to 350 pounds using a student discount. Im on the Irish website btw. Any tips?

For me there is no noticeable lag, its even playable in the game to play inside OBS, but that gives you subsampling reduction, on the monitor I expect is next to no lag, and is 4:4:4. The pci express version of the product does 4k120.

You won't be able to get lower price. Because, Ireland and UK sites are different and they don't offer the same deals and prices, as I asked few times already this is the answer I got. And their delivery date is 26th of January so I highly doubt you can get any other discount because of shipment being late. Also keep in mind that, Brexit is around the corner so after 1st of January, there will be customs between UK and Ireland. I don't know if and how it will impact the warranty but if you have to return your monitor to UK and get a replacement, it will be a big hassle. As someone will have to deal with the customs process and I doubt that will be Dell. So best you can do is getting it for 390 euro (which is actually 10% student discounted price over the actual 433€) and then hope to get it delivered on time.

Just my 2 cents, I doubt they will manage to deliver it on 26th of January as there is huge backlog of the orders, especially from this site and other deals websites.

I tried today a *lot*. :p No dice. The offer is over.

If you read the HotUkDeals thread, it gives a bit more info.

I think I'll wait now, there are new AUOptronics panels coming which are better than the LG Nano IPS (see Hardware Unboxed latest MSI review).
