Just gat a Time Capsule tomorrow anyway

I already have one but it is full with back up of the old iMac, the best thing is there is a USB connection which I have another HD connected and it has wirelessly backed up to that now.

Really tempting to get a base-spec 27" but my 24" Dell and Shuttle combo are doing a stellar job as a download/media box. But daaaaaamn it's reallllllly tempting

How would you guys do the following:

1 - output the iMac to my TV via receiver
2 - play music externally through receiver

Would prefer digitally is possible, what cables do I need?

When it comes to sharing th output to a tv, can't beat Airplay via Atv although its more expensive then a cable

Airplay using Apple TV is the neatest option.

You can get a raspberry pi, put on Rasbmc and use Airplay from that. I did only costs £30 lol. Even put it in a black case to make it look like an apple tv

I have an Apple TV and an amp with AirPlay built in but I can't play little beep, click, YouTube, BBC news, flash video sound out of those.

I'll have a test later if these work for my MBP but why not use the YouTube app built into the ATV?

When I am sitting on my desk I don't want to get up, boot up ATV, go to Youtube, find it and then watch it on the TV...I just like to click new tab in browser and search.

I've ordered a Toshlink cable now, £2 old school solution but it should work

You have the same USB 3 hub, that I have ordered for my replacement iMac if it ever gets here(the imac been in tranzit for 3 days and overdue on delivery..) How you finding it for actual connections? Also does it slip heard many people say it does.

Unlucky on the delay, i guess weekend and New Years Holiday doesn't help.

Apparently the actual USB3 hub slips around the desk due to poor feet?

Also meant the connections on the USB3 hub as apparently it isn't good for external HDDS.

There are 4 USB ports behind the machine, currently:

1 - Superdrive (it has to be for power)
2 - USB hub
3 - 3TB External HD
4 -

And yes, the hub is light and there is no rubber feet so its just hard plastic, not really a problem with sliding as such, more a danger with it being too light (it is hollow) and the cables at the rear pulling it down behind the desk.
