*** New Design 2012 iMac 21.5" & 27" ***

Evening all.

I've been pondering on the idea of buying a 21.5 imac for a while now. The only thing that is stopping me at the moment is the thought of Apple bring out a new one anytime soon? :\ Is this likely? Should I wait a while or just get one now?

Wouldn't buy now unless you can get a very good price on it. Best bet is to wait until the Haswell models come out. The current machine is fantastic if you really need it now however.

Oh ok, how long until the haswell refresh? Is it likely to be much more than the current 21.5"? Im stuck between the two models? I'm a huge mac n00b but I'd love to make the jump over from windows.

2.7 GHz
2.9 GHz

Am I as a n00b likely to notice any difference between these 2 models and the haswell refresh? Ideally a grand was around what I wanted to spend, and I'll mainly use it for music, surfing and photography. I'm leaning more towards the 2.9GHz model atm.

Cheers guys, apologies for the lack of knowledge.

I have the 27" 3.4Ghz (turbo boost to 3.9Ghz)
GTX 680 2G
1TB Fusion
32G ram (it came with 8, I upgraded this myself)

So pretty much top spec, except not the 768G SSD.

Side note, I don't know if you know already, the ram in the 21" iMac cannot be upgraded by the end user, there is no back panel like there is in the 27". So if you want more ram in a 21", you will have to pay Apple Ram prices. So think hard and compare how much a 21" iMac with the ram that you want vs the cost of buying a bottom spec 27" and adding the ram yourself cost.

Right, ok. Thanks for that, Ray. I didn't know that but certainly something i'll think about. Personally I'd like to spread the cost over a bit of time rather than pay over a grand in one go, so again I'll have to have a look at a few places, the purple shirt place offer buy now pay later (12 months) which I liked, but they seem to have a lack of stock everywhere.

I think Apple does finance, and if you order through education store (you are a student?), you will get something like 14% discount with free 3 years apple care thrown in for free.

p.s. don't bother getting Apple's Superdrive unless you really want a matching one or slot loaded. An external DVD-RW writer is about £20.

Get a USB 3 hub, 4 ports is never enough and USB 3 is FAST !

Unfortunately not a student :( work full time. I thought about Apple finance but it's the interest that puts me off, I liked the purple shirt store offer of buy now pay later as you can pay lumps off as and when in that 12 months and get no interest.

Decided to plunge for the 27" I hope you're proud Ray! :D Do you or anyone else happen to know of a website or book that can teach me the basics etc? not used a mac to its advantages before so I'm really excited to get to know my way around.

Cheers :)
