*** New Design 2012 iMac 21.5" & 27" ***

The 27-inch iMac is available with a 2.9 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.6 GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M for a suggested retail price of $1,799 (US); and with a 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.6 GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX for a suggested retail price of $1,999 (US).

Is the $200 or £200 (translated) increase worth the upgrade for the CPU and GFX in this instance?

Also, I was hoping they would have the i7 as an option?

Sounds like the same old debate going from the single core to dual core before all software taking advantage of all the cores?

Not exactly - the i5 and i7's offered are all quad-core so in that sense it's the same. What we don't know yet is which i7 chip Apple are using. I'd expect things to be clearer once the teardown/reviews reveal the chips models.

For most people the i5 will be more than enough. It is only people who are hammering the CPU that will need the i7.

Ok, I have read that article but still don't exactly get it, it mentions HT and what not, and I know i7 is faster IF your work warrants it.

So, what versions are there and what would be the "best" one?

What I use it for however, I guess the general editing doesn't need that "extreme" power. The only time however is when I export photos, currently with my 2.97 Ghz Core 2 Duo it takes about 1 minute to export a single photo....you can imagine how long it takes to export a set of wedding images. I basically lose the computer for the evening if I do that.

So, basically, thinking down the line. Would the i7 be more future proofing?

I know for one thing, I will be getting the Fusion drive and upgrading the Ram myself to 16G or even 32G.

But I guess it seems best to wait to see what i7 they use.

Hyperthreading (HT) increases the number of simultaneous parallels tasks the CPU (per core) can undertake. It's a performance boost that is not available on the i5 chips.

It sounds like if you plan on keeping the iMac for a while then the i7 would be a good upgrade especially as you look to be taking care of the possible memory and disk bottlenecks.

Apple have absolutely killed the base model though, no user upgrade for RAM 5400 drive or pay bonkers prices for the next model up with the Fusion Drive better CPU and more RAM.

I doubt I will buy another iMac again. Mini with IPS monitor looks more attractive now.

I can't believe i am going to say this but i agree with you.

The one thing I can say the Mini doesn't do it for me is the GFX and the Ram capacity.
