New essential Android apps thread

Anyone know if it's possible to back up textra settings and restore them on a new device. I hate when I get a new phone I have to redo every single flipping personalisation for each friend, change notification tone, change notification colour, change text conversation colour etc. The app doesn't do it but surely the settings are stored somewhere.

Also anyone use SwiftKey and browse this forum with it on phone and type. The auto correct doesn't work for me and shows how bad typing on swift key can be with accuracy of hitting the keys.

On a related note, anyone able to recommend another keyboard not Google or SwiftKey. I love SwiftKey features bit tired of correcting a thousand times the randomly placed extra words.

Below will be a post written with SwiftKey.thisbwas written with Google keyboard

Anyone know if the stock android dialler is available separately (for Oreo)?
Found an old MM version but not been updated since 2016
One thing I really miss from my Nexus 6p is the integrated caller identifier and I find truecaller and the like to be overly intrusive and not consistent.

This is what I don't understand from devs. There's one line of code that means the app data for each user of that app would be backed up to their own cloud (Google Drive?). Why would an app not do this? You install again on a new phone and all your data should re-appear. Mind you, it's not perfect. I have it on my apps and I've been able to install without it restoring the data.

Settings -> System -> Backup -> App Data

Is Textra listed?

What do people use to transfer files either from or to their Android devices via wifi? I tend to use Solid Explorer either with SMB or the FTP add on but find both methods are rather slow (unless it's a problem with my SD card). Taking SD card out and using an SD card reader every time is a faff.

That is what I use personally. I find the speeds to be decent (10MB/s)

That is the version a lot of us have been using on the U11+

Only problem is that because it isn't a system app, the caller ID and nearby functions don't seem to work.

Nope nothing shoeing fortextra .perhaps it's time I love to another text app. Anyone recommendations for one that allows individual text tones for each contact and backs up!

Thanks... Unfortunately without those two features working it's pretty pointless using over stock HTC dialler imo.

Biggest benefit for my particular case is not having to worry about the call screen stopping me from what I'm doing. Still have no idea why HTC haven't implemented this basic feature yet.

I've been using Pulse to sync SMS across all my devices and it restored my messages easily when I changed phones. It does save the individual contact colours but I can't see anything for notification tones. Although you do have to pay for the syncing feature. Can't remember the price but think it was low enough for me to use my Google Rewards credit.

Not sure many have back up options for such settings. You could try Google Messages to see
unfortunately google messages doesn't allow the customisation i want. back up of messages i don't care for as google do this automatically any way

i use individual text tones for certain contacts, individual themes for each contact (but i can lose this), and schedule sending so i write a text at midnight to be sent in the morning.

Is there an app that will download my Youtube subscriptions to watch offline? Similar to how Pocketcasts work, where you can tell to keep x amount of episodes :)

And this is the thing, it's quite literally one line of code... android:allowBackup="true"

I don't really know why every dev wouldn't put this in their app?

Surely there must be more to it than that in terms of backing up. Like there must be some extra work to do that devs are too lazy to bother with. Waiting for Google to make certain things like this mandatory.

Hmmmm I think you'll just need to deal with resetting things up at this point. I can't think of anything that would help unless you root and go the Titanium Backup option or you could try Helium with ADB. Someone asked for backup support on Textra's website and got zero response but you could try emailing them.

i've since discovered yaata sms which seems to do all i want, and supposedly backs up the customisation too. boy will i be bugged if not true as it takes longer to customise this app, however the customisation is great on this one.
