New essential Android apps thread

i've since discovered yaata sms which seems to do all i want, and supposedly backs up the customisation too. boy will i be bugged if not true as it takes longer to customise this app, however the customisation is great on this one.

If you've a second phone you could try it out. Back it up and see if it restores when you install it on another device.

Surely there must be more to it than that in terms of backing up. Like there must be some extra work to do that devs are too lazy to bother with. Waiting for Google to make certain things like this mandatory.

Nope, I've done it in my apps. Literally one line of code and it backs up user app data, up to 25MB to the users Google Drive account. That's why I don't understand more apps don't do it.

But if they use the method I mention above, it normally happens overnight. Check settings to see if it's backed up (shown further up in thread)

That's foolish lol.

You can also force the back up to happen via ADB if necessary

Code:
adb shell
bmgr run
bmgr backupnow --all

If a error appears then running this should make it work

Code:
bmgr backupnow appdata

I do it all the time when selling a phone/sending one back

Urgh. Yeah I'm getting this too on forums. So annoying! Fine everywhere else.

Anyone know if it's possible to back up textra settings and restore them on a new device. I hate when I get a new phone I have to redo every single flipping personalisation for each friend, change notification tone, change notification colour, change text conversation colour etc. The app doesn't do it but surely the settings are stored somewhere.

Also anyone use SwiftKey and browse this forum with it on phone and type. The auto correct doesn't work for me and shows how bad typing on swift key can be with accuracy of hitting the keys.

On a related note, anyone able to recommend another keyboard not Google or SwiftKey. I love SwiftKey features bit tired of correcting a thousand times the randomly placed extra words.

Below will be a post written with SwiftKey.thisbwas written with Google keyboard

I've been having the same problem for a while, they've fixed it but it's only available in the Beta app at the moment. I'm using it now and it fixed the issue for me.

Oooh, that's nice, I like that widget from the pixel launcher, but I prefer Nova, will try it on my 2XL....

I do like the idea that this widget lets you control the weather. Too cold for me at the moment, would definitely warm it up a little.

:p

Dumb question but how do you get into the settings for the widget once you've set it up? Can't find it without putting the widget back on the desktop again :confused::confused:
Just open the app in the app drawer :p. If needed, press the 3 dot menu button and tap refresh to properly update it.

What's the recommended app for blocking spam/nuisance calls? I've used TrueCaller in past but I don't like how it and many others require so many permissions. If you don't agree to all 3 permissions the app won't run. Usually I don't answer and then google the number and then block. I answered a call just now thinking it was a recruitment agency for a job I may have applied for but it was one of those pesky accident claim calls. I do get quite a lot of these calls and sometimes do miss genuine calls that then go to voicemail.

On my s8 / Note 8 i love the seperate app sound feature. Allowing me when im in the car connected to bluetooth I can route google maps through the phones speaker. Its just a shame its limited to 1 app though.

Are there any apps which allow me to do this with more than one app on the play store?

Thanks

Does anyone find Spotify kills your battery when streaming music on 4g? 47m of spotify uses 21% battery on my pixel 2.

Similarly Chrome drains the battery at an alarming rate.
