New Gaming Rig Advice..

Can't answer that for you definitively - depends largely on the skill of your local shop and how discerning they are.

Plus, you would only be paying for a fault diagnosis; i doubt very much a fix. If we do the test outside the case and it doesn't boot - something is definitely bust - most probably the MB.

They will charge you a minimum of £50 and will cover most of what we've done already - but they will have the advantage of testing with known working components e.g. a different PSU to pinpoint the fault without any ambiguity.

The b*st*rd would be that it's returned to you saying that the motherboard is faulty - and you have an invoice of £50 for the privilege.

Sounds harsh - but that's the reality i'm afraid. I will try my up most to pinpoint the problem with the items we have to hand.

The best case scenario is that we get life outside of the case and we can build from there.

Worst case is that it doesn't work - and we're left wondering what's at fault. But the big money would be on the MB.

Additional: What is the make and model of your PSU?

That's the problem isnt it, getting a fee for something we already kind of know and adding to the money I'll have to pay in the long run which is already enough!

It's a 550W XFX PRO Core Edition 80 Plus Bronze PSU.

I'm looking at your first post - you were very close to buying a Ryzen build. Until I mistakenly advised you otherwise...

For argument sake - lets say your MB is toast. That means you've lost a resale value of approx. £50 - £80.

But if you were to adapt your build to a Ryzen 1600 it would offset the loss - and TBH - that's the CPU I would buy for a gaming build.

You also put memory in that wont run at 3200 - so I'll adapt that and it will save you some more money.

I'm just going to cost up a basket - as you may be able to get a performance wise the same build for games and technically not lose any money...

This is purely to try and lift your spirits a bit...

Thanks Plec really appreciate it.

Thinking of heading in that direction if I can't get it working still tomorrow. Once the new rig would be all set up I'd probably have forgotten about this whole fiasco and very excited that I have a shiny new toy in the Ryzen 1600. We will see anyway.

This would be my build around your mother board

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £499.18
(includes shipping: £12.30)

And this was your build:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £628.18
(includes shipping: £12.30)

That's a £120 difference - you technically wouldn't notice the hit if you did a more balanced gaming build. Plus you could afford a third party cooler and get a decent clock.

I'm serious when I say I, personally, would be buying the 1600 over the 1700.

It would be a waste - and I love doing builds for biggest bang for buck. The 1600 with 6 cores and 12 threads is amazing performance to price ratio - look at reviews - and it will increase in infamy as games become optimised for Ryzen more and more.

The memory you picked would not run at 3200 - very few do - and the one I selected I just hoped you like the look of as well as being compatible and cheap.

That's pretty much right there what I was looking at, didn't we decide it would be better getting the GIGABYTE B350 though? Not sure what sort of re sale value I'd get from my 7970 and 8GB of RAM, not very much at all I expect.

I would personally pick gigabyte - better quality, regular BIOS updates and UK RMA - but the board would be £20 more.

I thought you may have picked MSI as you like the look of it as you've picked a Windowed case.

Yeah I don't do any editing and stuff so you're right that the 1700 would be a waste. The reviews I've seen for Ryzen as well have reported very smooth gameplay so that is what got me excited! A 1600 coupled with my new 1070 should be quite great. I did forget to say that on one of the Power Supply cables the netting round one of the cables is ever so slightly frayed, noticed that the other day. Dunno if that's something to keep any eye on.

To be honest mate I'm really not to bothered what it looks like, as long as it runs flawlessly then I am a very happy man. My PC is tucked away under my desk anyway so it's never there for me to see it.

7970 - people asking for £70

8Gb DDR3 1600 memory approx. £30 - but memory is going up

i5 3570k - £70

Is that with original packaging though? I have the box for the 7970, just not the other two unfortunately (it has been 4 years).

So there is some re sale value in them then, that could come in handy.

Didn't check about packaging - I suspect so with gfx as people are fussy about that for postage as much as anything.

Memory and CPU not so much - especially as so many CPUs are OEM.

Well lets see what happens tomorrow, motherboard battery has been out now since 4ish and will leave it out until the morning, not expecting any change but I'll keep praying. Then I shall be attempting to remove it from the case. One thing this whole experience has given me is a little more understanding of parts and builds so there is that, would feel a lot more confident building my own PC after this.
