New Gaming Rig Advice..

His memory is running at 1333mhz instead of 1600. Not sure how to access memtest?
Activate the xmp - but don't worry about it.

If he/you wants to get his system back up and running just post on this thread - and we can give it a go. There's a chance that loading optimised defaults, setting the xmp and setting to AHCI - then load the OS onot any available HDD. There's every chance it will be back up and running.

It all depends on what he says. If he does want to buy it I'll go Ryzen. If not I'll probably just buy it and stick with what I have for a bit... Maybe.
That's a £70 keyboard that he has there too - why is it in the garage?

He could do the above and sell a fully working system - it will go towards his/your build. ;)

Sorry quoted the wrong thing mate. Just meant to say generally will his parts sell even if they weren't in original packaging.

Setting XMP made the RAM run at 1600 so that's good.

Yes, but obviously not as appealing to buyers.

Look at Gumtree and see if people are buying second hand rigs. What is the rest of the spec? Mainly MB and CPU (will tell you in the BIOS - old school BIOS too).

Yes, if you've saved and exited and got to the BIOS again. Otherwise you've just changed a setting and the BIOS hasn't applied it yet.

If you look at the motherboard closely (maybe around the cpu socket or between PCI slots) you should see a white label or gold/white print with some codes on it.

Write down the S/N and or the MAC number.

That board is now nearly £80 with p&p - they really are selling for premium bucks second hand as they're discontinued :/ (But it was a quality board).

Perhaps we need to widen our search to include z68s...

I would be tempted to install his windows on his conventional drive (if he doesn't need anything off it) and get it up and running - as much for your experience as to test if the system is stable.

And yes, i hoped it would hover just below £80 but that is a great board. As mentioned earlier, we may have to consider z68 too - wouldn't be an issue.

Would cost though wouldn't it mate to buy Windows? Or do you mean just install it and not activate it?

Has he not got windows? But yes you could install and not activate for practice purposes. Always Linux/Ubuntu :)

Is the Z68 a cheaper option?

Would hope - but would expect a top end board to still hit close to the same money unfortunately due to demand. It would at least give you more options to pick from.

He hasn't, I think when he bought it, it was actually an unactivated version of Windows 7.

Is there a chance the SSD is working still? How could I find out? If not I'll download it on his HDD, not sure how many GB it is, doesn't seem to say anywhere on it. Is 7200rpm though.

Where could I find one of them then? The Bay again?

Ideally, you would connect it to another computer and see if it's recognised.

But, you could plug the SSD back into his system (disconnecting all other drives) and run the OS install process and see if it recognises the drive and can access it. (The BIOS may recognise it but doesn't necessarily mean its working - if it does't recognise it the odds are its borked).

(change to the 'bay' - i know we're looking for a second hand board but the mods may get twitchy if we keep mentioning them :))

Yes, we would look in the same place - or you could start posting in the 'General Discussion Forum' and get into a heated debate to build up your post count. You need 1000 posts to access the MM forum :/

Wrong interface unless you have a caddy?

Try hooking it up to his present rig - if the BIOS recognises it try installing a temporary OS. Be sure to delete partitions and reformat before install - if it works...
