New headset : Pimax Crystal

It's beginning to arrive in the hands of some western beta testers...

It is sounding rather good. Though for nearly 2k I would expect so!

Not too sure about having to wear a full grey bodysuit just for VR

I think it's safe to say the Crystal has the best display in a consumer hmd. He's pinned a comment on his vid saying he later cured the low fps he was getting.

102 fov  look at the size of the thing, come on Pimax! I assume the lenses are massive?

Bigscreen gets murdered for it's low fov, but that's 93 so not that much smaller considering the weight/size difference

Looks like you can change the FOV, it suggests the 42ppi is 102, and I think the 35 is 110?

Not sure to be honest, there's very little technical info in these youtube review videos. It makes me wonder if both pimax and bigscreen are telling them what they can't say which makes sense as neither are final products.

Still can't get Darshan to answer a few things on the secret discord channel, which makes me wonder if they don't yet know themselves. For instance, some of the bigscreen units are running steam render res at 1:1 ratio which if true would be pretty amazing....whereas pimax are the other way around in having a huge overhead.

I'm not sure anyone has said....I'm running these lenses on crystal which gives 42ppd and I've measured the fov in testhmd to get this result.

Finally.

listening back to seba's podcast, he mentioned a production unit was coming his way. Now they're rolling it out to backers, hopefully retailing isn't more than a few months away.

For me the make or break will be the results of the wider FoV lenses, getting DFR working well along with the cost of all the extras. I recall HTC asking almost £400 for the Vive Pro antenna, that's not ok as an upgrade for example.

Total including VAT and shipping is €1,778.56 (including a deduction for the preorder price and a $50 shipping coupon).

I was order 60 something on day 1
i pre-ordered on day 3, swaying between buying it or not, your feedback will be greatly appreciated!
my price will be the same as yours minus $400 as i have a $300 off coupon and a current pimaxian $100 discount :p

Well I guess it should be here within about 2 weeks, will definitely post my impressions!

Fingers crossed, it’s definitely a bit of a punt but that makes it more exciting lol.

My biggest concern is valve suddenly comes out and announces the deckard tbh!

Yeah I’m not expecting anything to release that’ll make me particularly regret the crystal within the next year or two.

I’m wondering if the size and bulk of the crystal might mean I continue with a 2 headset approach (pico 4, perhaps upgrading to something like the HTC XR elite) for general VR and keep the crystal for seated sim games. Will have to see how the crystal ends up feeling in use.

It’ll also be interesting once they get that MR faceplate out, I do like a good pass through.

Given the specs, the only reason you'll regret the crystal is if it simply doesn't do things as well as promised. If it delivers, it's a hell of a headset.

I think one of my biggest reservations remains the size and bulk rather than the spec.

When you look at what the Beyond achieves, and then compare that to the crystal, it makes the formfactor laughable (not helped by them using the same housing as the 12k will use, so even with their design the crystal doesn't need to be as big as it is).

I agree that pure specs wise it's unlikely to get trounced anytime soon (although those emagin 4kx4k uOLEDs are going to go somewhere eventually!) but I think the rest of the industry is definitely moving towards lighter and smaller form factors, so I could see deckard for example giving at least what the crystal does but in a much better formfactor that makes me wearing a huge hammerhead shark mask look a bit old fashioned. In addition I use a motion rig, so the inertia of the headset will have an actual impact when things get bumpy, so it's more than just comfort/looks.
