my 160gb classic arrived this morning (will try and get pics up later if I can find batteries for the camera)
First impressions (in no real order), bearing in mind I've used a 4g (grayscale) until recently
The size is simply astonishing, its significantly thinner than my 40gb 4g yet has 4 times the storage, I can't quite believe it. Otherwise, still the scratch magnet of old but as mine will end up in a case and I'm unlikely to ever sell it, this is a moot point for me.
The click wheel is less responsive than my 4g, it requires considerably more pressure to work and for scrolling seems to require more movement to scroll the same distance compared to my 4g. I'd also prefer a convex select button rather than the flat one the classic has.
UI is nice and functional, although a bit slower than my 4g but thats to be expected really given the increased complexity. Not really much else to describe really, everything just works like you'd expect on an ipod, simple yet incredibly effective is the phrase I'd use. Coverflow seems a bit of a novelty and quite slow, and personally I can't see myself using it. I do like the search function though.
Packaging doesn't compare with the old 3g/4g which was a work of art in box design, now feels functional at best and personally I'd rather have the mains adapter included and black cables to go with a black ipod.
Sound quality is definitely better than 4g, highs are warmer and the bass tighter, though i've only had a quick listen. There is also no audible static or hard-drive noise which coming from a 4g is wonderful. The background hiss on headphones is also negligble compared to my 4g which was noisy as hell.
It definitely syncs faster than my 4g.
I've not tried any video or photos (got a touch coming for that
)
Overall I'm very pleased. I can't fault it as a music player which is what I want it for.
