New iPod??

Hey all (Back from Hols :D),

My 160GB Classic was shipped on the 11th so it's a good chance I will have it today (tracking on the TNT showed it was in the local depot).

Expect pics if it turns up.. although I'm heading out so I hope someone signs for it!

my 160gb classic arrived this morning (will try and get pics up later if I can find batteries for the camera)

First impressions (in no real order), bearing in mind I've used a 4g (grayscale) until recently

The size is simply astonishing, its significantly thinner than my 40gb 4g yet has 4 times the storage, I can't quite believe it. Otherwise, still the scratch magnet of old but as mine will end up in a case and I'm unlikely to ever sell it, this is a moot point for me.

The click wheel is less responsive than my 4g, it requires considerably more pressure to work and for scrolling seems to require more movement to scroll the same distance compared to my 4g. I'd also prefer a convex select button rather than the flat one the classic has.

UI is nice and functional, although a bit slower than my 4g but thats to be expected really given the increased complexity. Not really much else to describe really, everything just works like you'd expect on an ipod, simple yet incredibly effective is the phrase I'd use. Coverflow seems a bit of a novelty and quite slow, and personally I can't see myself using it. I do like the search function though.

Packaging doesn't compare with the old 3g/4g which was a work of art in box design, now feels functional at best and personally I'd rather have the mains adapter included and black cables to go with a black ipod.

Sound quality is definitely better than 4g, highs are warmer and the bass tighter, though i've only had a quick listen. There is also no audible static or hard-drive noise which coming from a 4g is wonderful. The background hiss on headphones is also negligble compared to my 4g which was noisy as hell.

It definitely syncs faster than my 4g.

I've not tried any video or photos (got a touch coming for that ;) )

Overall I'm very pleased. I can't fault it as a music player which is what I want it for.

It's hard to explain but you get a moving slideshow of all your albumart if you hover over the "Music" section.

Same thing happens with TV shows, but not podcasts..

Does look good in action, but it can be slow when jumping from menu to menu because the hard disc is being thrashed quite heavily (maybe it's my 80GB+ library!?)

:eek::eek: 80GB+ Libary? Dam EVH how many CD's do you have?

Have you tried the Podcast section on iTunes? There's a few decent ones on.

Make sure your vids are QT, MP4, MPEG format to play... if it doesn't play, e.g. .avi, you might want a converter software.

nope, not flawed testing. The classics use an inferior dac (the touch/iphone use a wolfson), there's still bass rolloff and the treble's amplified by 0.1db, making it sound better.

Well, I previously ripped all my audio at 320kbps AAC and it weighed in at 60GB, so when I went exclusively to lossless a week or so ago that pretty much went up by 30% (re-ripped it obv).

I was going to post pictures anyway, but wasn't sure if anyone would be interested!

But anyway here you go:

It's basically the same thickness as the 30Gb 5G so I haven't posted any side shots.

New menu!

New games, a lot nicer and more detailed than the older games, you can save them now too. Only thing is, I can't seem to get any of the games that I downloaded for my 5G onto it.

It doesn't seem to be laggy at all on my classic, only thing is if you scroll through really fast all the album covers don't show straight away.

Looks awesome thanks!

Gonna get one of them definitely.

Bah the ipod has got a limited volume - it just isnt loud enough (yes after going into settings etc). I just hope the EU volume limiter will be removed soon.

The EU has a volume limit?!

Phew, I hadn't noticed as my 30GB 5G was from America and I'm getting my Touch from the states too. :D

Do any of the new iPods come with remotes anymore? I really find the in-line remote of my 2nd gen iPod useful.

Am I going to have to order one of the FM Remote things at £35 just to use my iPod Touch without digging into my pocket everytime? :(
