New NUC, HD5000, 4x USB 3.0, infrared sensor

I'm a bit confused, this says "Internal support for 2.5-inch HDD or SSD". I thought this would be mSATA (for boot & OS ) + internal HDD (storage)? Is it just one HDD/SSD SATA connection?

Another firmware upgrade available, v023

New Fixes/Features:
 Fixed issue with random USB loss.
 Fixed issue where the Event count does not match the number of
times the event occurred.
 Reduced POST time.
 Updated help information in Visual BIOS.
 Fixed issue where system won’t boot to Linux Mint.

I've pulled the trigger on an Abel H2 fanless chassis, should arrive this coming week. I can post photos if anyone is interested. The H2 supports 2.5" drives, although I won't be using one to begin with as I have a 240GB mSATA SSD and most of my media is stored on a NAS.

Will do. I think it said a 1-2 day dispatch so they might have stockpiled some in a range of colours rather than just building each one to order.

I went for the black to match the rest of my AV gear, although I did seriously consider the Diamond (gunmetal grey) before deciding that the polished top might be a bit too reflective.

Be interested in temperatures etc. under load and how easy you find the installation. They claim these cases run cooler than the stock fan! Any ideas of whether this voids the warranty? Not worried about noise levels of my NUC, these aren't are bothering me at all, but sounds like a nice little project and reduces the fan dust cleaning maintenance overhead.

I'll definitely be checking the claim about temperatures, I think some of the stuff on the product pages of the Haswell chassis is copied/pasted from the 1st gen NUC cases which did noticeably reduce temperatures vs the stock fan.

I don't believe putting the motherboard into a different case will void the warranty of the board itself, to my knowledge there are no warranty stickers that would be ripped by the process. Obviously if you did have a problem with the board later on, you'd need to put it back together in the original case before sending it to Intel.

I think it was a valid question for those of us that purchased the kit version before both the motherboard-only option and compatible fanless enclosures actually became available. However as I stated before, I believe that we should be fine as long as the board is put back in the Intel enclosure should the need for an RMA arise.

If no void sticker exist you will be fine, intel themselves sell these nucs as barebones so they know and understand you have to open it to install ram/ssd etc, would be pretty funny if they did put a void sticker on it before getting sacked for wasting time and money :)

I haven't read through this post but I just thought I'd let you know that if you OC the NUC you will achieve Intel IRIS graphics from it.

Just an FYI really.

Still no sign of my Abel H2 chassis, but the first review is out now from PCPro, including this section about the temperatures vs the Intel case:

High operating temperatures are always a concern when it comes to passive cooling, but here the Tranquil PC defies expectations. We left both the Core i5-equipped Tranquil PC and the identically specified Intel NUC D54250WYK sitting idle for 30 minutes, after which the Abel H2-5 settled at 36°C and the NUC reached 42°C. We then repeated the test with Prime95 pushing the CPU flat out, and while the tables were turned – the Intel topped out at 79°C; the Abel H2-5 at 82°C – the NUC's cooling fan span up to a constant, intrusive whine. The Abel H2-5's chassis did become noticeably hot to the touch, but the temperature remained stable under load and, crucially, it didn't make a peep.

Why did intel not just do this in first place :)

Was trying to avoid that, but I think it's the best option.

Time to check the sofa for spare change to afford this thing :)
Finally got around to submitting my order.

1 x Intel NUC D54250WYK1 Intel QS77 2 x 204Pin Intel H
1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3
1 x Crucial M500 240GB SATA mSATA Internal Solid State

Plus some required new video cables.

My Abel H2 has been dispatched so hopefully will arrive tomorrow and I'll try to post some photos this weekend.

Well it arrived today, but unfortunately they forgot to include the PSU, VESA mount but more importantly the external WiFi aerial kit and internal SMA connector cable.

The PSU and VESA mount are fine, I can use the original PSU in the meantime, but I'll need to see tomorrow whether there's any point in assembling it without the SMA WiFi connector, or if it's better to wait until they send that out to me, i.e if it needs to be fitted before putting the motherboard into the chassis.
