New NUC, HD5000, 4x USB 3.0, infrared sensor

The only other IR annoyance is that every time I switch the NUC on the XBox also fires up :-(

I seem to recall there being a setting in the xbox dashboard that chooses which remotes it responds to. Either just xbox remote, or media centre remote as well. There also may be the option to switch off the feature all together...

I had the same problem, but now I get XBMC to do the sleeping and not Win8. I set it to suspend after 30 mins and it's doing exactly that. If I don't set any power options in XBMC and let Win8 control the power, it just never seems to sleep. I'm sure there will be a setting in the OS that needs overriding, but now XBMC does it I've not bothered to look.

Not tried this with xmbc but it should work, from admin cmd prompt:

powercfg /requestoverride <path to xbmc>\xmbc.exe

This should stop xbmc preventing the machine to sleep, but the solution to let xbmc do it itself is just as good.

powercfg /requests also shows what is preventing the machine to sleep (sometimes...)

Hi,

I've just picked up a D34010WYK (Haswell i3) NUC and am having issues getting it to fire up. I bought a 60gb Kingston mSATA SSD and 1x 4gb of Corsair Vengance DDR3-1600 RAM, which didn't work as it's 1.5v and the NUC only supports 1.35v. I then tried RAM from my laptop that I know works, is 1.35v, 1333mhz and very close in spec to that recommended on Intel's site.

The 1.5v RAM gave three flashing lights on startup (indicates memory error) - fair enough. The 1.35v RAM sounds like it's getting further down the chain, the power light doesn't flash and the fan varies speed during what is clearly some sort of start up process. But there's nothing coming from the HDMI output (have tried both into my Dell PC screen and my Samsung TV via a mini HDMI to HDMI adaptor).

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I haven't tried to boot anything yet but was assuming I'd at least see some sort of BIOS screen? Could it be that the initial boot screen is at a resolution that my monitors don't support?

Any thoughts on things to try? CMOS reset? SSD out? Try booting something? Any known issues or could it be DOA?

Cheers!

I'm pretty sure BIOS selection is F2, worth bashing that to try get to it? Otherwise worth trying a display port to HDMI cable?

Also have you thought about plugging it into your TV if it has HDMI? Mine boots BIOS into 1080p no problems. I'm pretty sure it detects the supported resolution.

yup id suggest the same try all video outputs and ports, really does sound like a ram issue. Also remember your tft or tv screen is set to the right video mode, Its easy sometimes to forget you got dvi/vga/hdmi etc

Resetting the cmos worth a shot also. Not really much else you can do

It is a great shame these nucs do not support 1.5v ram modules since they are common and cheaper. Other then that perhaps worth sourcing some ram that is approved and from the intel nuc compatible list, my gut tells me this will fire it up and boot properly.

Some crucial ram from the intel approved list and a hdmi to mini hdmi cable just showed up. Don't have anything mini DP tho. Will report back, thanks.

That sorted it! Looks like these are fussy with memory. 1600 1.35v is no problem but I tried 1.5v 1600 and 1.35v 1333 and neither worked.

Am I the only one using this as their day to day PC or is everyone just using them as media centers?

I must say I am really impressed with how much useabillity is packed into such a tiny size. I would recommend them to everyone who wants a low powered PC for emails/web browsing duties (that cant/wont use a tablet, or who prefers a proper screen and keyboard) if it were not for the price...The celeron seems a little too low powered, especially if you are still stuck on Windows, and the i3 is just slightly too expensive once you buy all the parts to be able to recommend over a low power custom build.

I'll check the bios revision out and let you know. Could well be that causing problems.

When setting my media centre up I noticed how zippy everything was, you really don't need more power for internet/office use.

Was about to order to upgrade my very aged HTPC, then realized my TV only has a single HDMI input which I use for my cable DVR. My old Epia system just uses S-Video.

I'd have to change my DVR to component to plug the NUC in to the HDMI :/

found this nice article with more details on the insides and capabilities of the haswell nuc:

http://forums.legitreviews.com/about45344.html#p221036

Seems to have a custom usb header for more usb ports but its custom size so not like desktop ones. Also has a htpc header which sounds interesting....

Also Gigabyte are going to give intel nucs a bit of competition they have already released their own line up of haswell new models here:

http://www.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/342/images/models.html

Includes a haswell Core i7-4500U 1.8GHz / 3.0GHz version also. Should in theory be similar in power consumption (10watts) but may use bit more on load compared to intels haswell nuc and core i5 cpu but should overall be faster @ 3ghz.

Seen them going for a whopping £480 however so quite a price difference over the £300 intel haswell units, perhaps prices will get better.

I think intel must have a core i7 version in the pipeline they perhaps did not want to release it in case it damages sales of the core i5 version...

Also we should have soon these new mini pcs

A thread is already on this section but its locked? perhaps Ocuk locked the thread not sure but here is the link to the review on Gigabytes new BriX Pro:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7648/gigabyte-brix-pro

Core i7-4770R with a Iris pro HD 5200. 15watts idle is awesome, is a true desktop replacement for anyone that does not wish to loose speed and performance, but can peak to 80watts when pushed to max compared to haswell nucs 30watts when also pushed. I believe it will be about £500-550 when it comes out barebones so much more expensive but also much more powerful. Anandtech will hopefully have a full review once it comes out later on this month.

I love that gigabyte Brix, its the same size as the intel nucs but double thickness....
steam boxes and many others are considering it as a more energy efficient desktop replacement or mini gaming machine.

Zotac also got a similar one coming soon:
http://www.stuff.tv/zotac/zotac-zbox-iq01-plus/review

Good time for mini powerful desktop replacements indeed :)

Looks amazing surprised it can work and operate and have win8 installed on it... only issue is AMD wont sell them hopefully they allow others to develop and take on the intel nucs.

One thing I don't like much about AMD is they have only given there nuc type design to gigabyte but nothing really came about and this was a year ago....

AMD for sure need an nuc counterpart, would most likely cost £100 or more less then intels rip off pricing scheme also.

I think the gigabyte brix pro with a intel 4770R cpu will be 2014s super nuc to get

Well, I am now agonizing over all of these various Mini PC options.

The Intel NUC looks by far the best value imo... the i5 and HD5000 really is the sweet spot in terms of price and performance. Gigabyte seem to be more expensive and lower-specced in general in terms of what you pay for, even with the new line-up.

I just specced the following:

  • Intel NUC Kit D54250WYK w. i5 and HD5000
  • 2x 4GB Kingston HyperX
  • ADATA SSD SX300 128GB (mSATA)
  • Intel 7260 801.11ac card

£421.06 (I am not in the UK and outside of the EU and not subject to the same tax system so pricing may well be cheaper)

Seems pretty reasonable right? I just can't be arsed with true self-builds any more... I want something tiny and nippy that will play 1080p now and 4k in future while allowing me to browse and stream from both net and NAS. There aren't so many other options that compete with this, right?

I will also buy a PS4 at some point and it will surely have DLNA capability in the next months, so hoping that it won't conflict with it so much in terms of functionality.
