New NUC, HD5000, 4x USB 3.0, infrared sensor

It doesn't need a different PSU, but my Intel supplied one (65W) buzzes a little bit, and apparently the one you can buy with the Abel is slightly lower wattage (36W), but still more than enough for the NUC's requirements under load so I thought I'd give it a shot to see if it might be slightly quieter.

Ahh gotcha!

I'm currently looking at the NUC's, the Abel H2 looks very interesting as i want a silent system.

I'm tempted to buy one, it's about time i upgraded from my AS Rock ION 330!

Finally got my video cables today. I think the install of Mint was faster than my old 486 booting into DOS.

Currently updating the OS before installing XBMC, loving my NUC so far though.

I've been through 2 fanless i5 haswell nuc systems, both suffered from electrical noise when the onboard graphics is exercised. Running the windows experience index in a quiet room shows up the problem on the graphics tests (if you want to try it). It was a shame as it would have made a perfect htpc.

My NUC board does have some electrical noise, but I could only hear it when I had the Abel H2 case open to debug my boot issues, which ended up just needing me to re-seat the RAM modules.

I haven't really been able to hear the electrical noise when the case is closed up and playing back videos.

The only issue I'm having is deciding which OS.

Initially put Mint on it, but massive overscan issues over HDMI to my tv made me change to Windows. I tried 8.1 for the first time, worst desktop OS ever, but my tv out is working correctly :/

Here are some photos of my Haswell i5 Intel NUC kit to Abel H2 chassis transplant

Anyone having problems with cir under win 8.1?
I can't get xmbc to do anything with my mce remote under windows but openelec works to apart from turning it on and off. All that required was a couple of lines of text to load the module correctly under openelec iirc but windows is a different matter.
I guess it isn't the remote if it works under openelec.

It's so long since I posted here I had to make a new account!

I managed to get my MCE remote working with XBMC under Windows 8.1 a few days ago.

Check to see if you have any unknown devices in Device Manager.

No I didn't have the last time I looked and the nuvoton and ehome along with a number of hid devices are all installed.
Sometimes I have had a crash reported for the nuvoton device and it says the drivers aren't for win 8.1 but I'm using the newest 8.1 ones from intel's NYC drivers page.

I have noticed others complaining about this now. When I got mine last year I couldn't find anyone reporting anything about 8.1 and cir. I see some people are using intelliremote with varying success and I have seen an intel forum post saying their engineers are working on it!

Picked up one of these recently and had a bit of a play with 'overclocking' (Yes I know this isn't really the correct term given what I'm doing, although you can increase the graphics frequency, but I didn't see much gains from doing so) it by increasing the TDP limits and have made a few quick videos about it.

Saw a 20% graphics improvement, but not sure its worth it for the noise increase personally.

Genuine question - that looked like a lot of artic silver, I'm pretty sure the guidance for my i7 920 was just a small pea size blob spread out. Won't that amount spread out and over onto the board? (Is it conductive?)

It was actually less than what it looks like in the photo, the core on the 4250U is pretty long and this was also the amount in the Abel H2 installation video on YouTube from the manufacturer.

I used Arctic Silver 5 rather than the supplied paste because the specifications are a bit better and I had some lying around so thought that I might as well. It's non-conductive.

Omar, did you notice that the part of the heatsink that touches the PCH is stepped? I left the thermal pad on as otherwise the PCH and the heatsink won't make contact....
