** NEW SAMSUNG ODYSSEY G7/G9 MONITORS 27-49" AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER **

Also - on the popping/clicking noises front... I had a serious issue with this on the old CJ89 models and it definitely sounded loud, electrical and scary. On the G9 I've noticed a super quiet plasticky sounding click, obviously this is subjective but I believe this is just the materials adjusting to temperature as you turn it on or change the brightness levels. Theres no excessive heat and I'm not considering it an issue. It's barely noticeable, you have to really listen closely and I think it stops after the temperatures level out. If you adjust the monitor on the stand you get a lot of the same sounding plasticky crackles as the materials flex, IMHO this is very normal and not an issue unless it sounds electrical, you smell burning and it's fairly loud - like a finger snap at least!

I've been through quite a few G9s - the noise volume level has varied. A couple of the earlier builds, the volume of the pops/clicks was quite loud and really noticeable and indeed annoying enough I returned one just for that reason. This latest I have either doesn't do it, or if it does is very quiet and barely noticeable. So in summary, it varies how loud that issue is.

I would argue any noise should not be normal - I never hear my flat panel TVs making any noises like that however quiet. It's a design/manufacturing issue they need to fix on the G9s.

newest nvidia driver is 456.98. It`s on nvidia website not yet on Geforce experience app ( as of yesterday anyway). Is the first driver I`ve used due just
recieving my g9. I can run at 240hz with my 3080 which I understand was an
issue previously.
Its working for you at 240Hz with adaptive sync + gsync enabled?

I made this as a separate thread originally, but, it is probably also useful to post it here too.

First of all, this is NOT meant to be a bad review, it is just advice and help to get the best out of this product. If anything, aside from the small issues that are easily worked around with the info below, this is an amazing monitor that I highly recommend.

So I recently received my new Samsung Odyssey G9 and wanted to share my experience so far and hopefully help some of you out with troubleshooting the issues I have already come across and solved. One of the first things I wanted to do was to make sure I was on the latest firmware, however, updating the firmware is very problematic but, I managed to do it in the end.

So firmware, first of all, the firmware file on the Samsung website is located here:

https://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/odyssey-gaming-monitor-g9-series

Looks simple enough, just click the download button next to where it says Firmware... NO!!!

Clicking the download button downloads the instructions to install the firmware (which are wrong) not the actual firmware. You have to click 'See More' and then click Download next to the latest firmware version, in my case it was:

Upgrade File(USB type)
Version 1006.2

Now you have the firmware, unzip it, pop it on a USB, stick the USB in the service port and go to 'Software Update' under the 'Support' menu option of the screen. It probably won't work, first of all, the instructions tell you to rename the file to a binary file, with a .bin extension. DO NOT DO THIS, leave it as a .img file!!!

Secondly, these screens are very picky about which USB's they will work with, you can't just use any, believe me, I bought 4 all together trying to get this to work so let me save you the pain. It only works with a USB that is 16Gb and formatted as FAT32, any bigger than 16Gb and you won't be able to format it as FAT32. Even then it will only work with some makes of USB, not all, the one I bought that I can confirm as working is per the link below:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SD...USB+Flash+Drive+USB+2.0&qid=1603309250&sr=8-1

SanDisk Cruzer Glide 16 GB USB Flash Drive USB 2.0

Most other USB drives won't work, but this one does. Format the USB as FAT32 and put the .img file on there, from within the downloaded .zip firmware file, ensuring it is the ONLY file on the USB. Now you can follow the rest of the instructions to update the firmware. It's taken me about 8 hours of Samsung phone support and days of research to bring you this info so hopefully, it will help you out.

Next, after a bit of digging about Samsung recommends installing an application of theirs called 'Easy Setting Box' that lets you split your screen into sections to drag and drop multiple windows into predefined locations or screen sections, great for productivity but guess what, it doesn't work!!! At least when I tried it, it didn't. Whenever I dropped an application into a screen section the window just turned completely black and you couldn't even close it, it was just a black box on the screen. You could move it about but it never came back to normal view again, I had to close it from 'Task Manager'.

Luckily, I found a great, FREE, alternative that works an absolute treat and does exactly what the Samsung product is supposed to do, if not even better and easier to use. It's called FancyZones and is part of a suite of small free applications called PowerToys available at the link below:

https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases/tag/v0.23.2

Scroll to the bottom and click on the 'PowerToysSetup-0.23.2-x64.exe' or whichever is the latest version, download and install, it's pretty easy to set up once installed.

Anyway, there you go, that's my help and advice to anyone buying one of these, or has already bought one of these screens. Once all the faf and hassle of sorting this stuff out is done, it really is a beautiful and stunning bit of kit, you won't be disappointed with.

I also have a slight clicking noise on the left side of my monitor.

It's not a big deal if I'm actually listening to something/gaming, but it does bug me slightly. Hopefully it goes away.

tried it both ways and mine held its hz - fps ratio perfectly both way above and below 70 hz. I went right down to 45 and it was behaving smoothly. Are you on a G9 or a G7?

Nice. G9 - it kept jumping around when below 60hz. Let's hope the replacement is better! I see N9s are about. Or maybe it's a firmware bug not showing the doubled rate? Mine was on 1005.4.

if any of you could check your FPS matches your monitor hz with or without hdr on I’d appreciate it. Mine fluctuates wildly.

Absolutely spot on above 60fps - compared with in-game overlays, FRAPS and VRRTest. Maybe slightly laggy (<1s) but stable. This is with HDR off, max set to 240hz but the Nvidia 1060 will only do max 120hz.

Mines a g9. Flicker is not crossing out of the gsync boundary I believe. I’ll try that vrrtest and see what that shows. Though I have already tried the nvidia pendulum demo and that showed the hz of the monitor wildly fluctuating (plus or minus 20hz) even when I fixed the FPS to say 100 in the demo settings.

I should add that I did once see gsync work but it’s almost like some freak combination of resetting the pc, toggling gsync, downgrading firmware etc just made it happen. Haven’t seen it work since even though I’ve tried everything.

Worth a shot, the pendulum demo is a little more unstable overall with its fps than the vrrtest seems to be. What GPU are you running it on? and have you got HDR on?

My G7 has behaved the same on all firmware, never got the weird washed out bug some seemed to get on the latest firmware either, but G9's arent 100% comparable with firmware really. It does look like the N9's are pretty solid so far so fingers crossed.
Hmm, I wonder how much of this is to do with a 1060, I'm on a 2080S but I know these displays, particularly the G9 are technically aimed at the new 30xx cards, although I do feel Samsung should have made the requirements of 240hz 10bit a bit more clear, but then its not like Nvidia tell us the limits of their cards easily either so...

Tried with hdr on and off. My gpu is a 1080ti. I’m thinking some of the issues maybe because it’s an older gpu. So I’ve ordered a 2060 just to test to see if that fixes it (3080 on preorder).

In my experience and tests--- > On 120hz, the VRR has 60-120 range, so in this case, only when lower than 60fps the LFC will kick in... In 240hz, the VRR range is 72-240... LFC will kick in when below 72.

LFC-> Doubles or Triples the frame rate so it will always be higher than the lowest range in VRR. Example: in 120hz mode (VRR 60-120): If ur fps drops to 30.. your hz will be 60. If drops to 25, will be 75, always higher than 60.

Flickering: (in 240hz - VRR 72-240) If your FPS fluctuates between 70 - 75, everytime is bellow 72 and then 73, the HZ will go to 144 or something and 73hz, and because of that, 1 extraframe will be showed, causing the flickering...

Anyone get a weird blue flicker on their G9 while in Warzone/MW? It seems to only happen when I'm in fullscreen. I have HDR on and G-Sync set to Fullscreen and Windowed mode (not sure if that helps, I've never really used any kind of gsync monitor before).

Setting it to fullscreen windowed gets rid of it, but the game tends to run smoother in fullscreen for me.

Anyone got fix for the samsung g9 odyssey 1 long bleep and 3 short bleep error bootup.

When restarting or powering up the computer the bois does not show up and the motherboard gives those 4 beep sounds.

Everything remains black on screen before the login page shows up.

When plugging my old monitor back in the erors are all gone.

Rig

nvidia 3090

One long and three short beeps suggests an issue with the GPU e.g. insufficient power. Have you plugged in the pcie cables and ensured that they are correctly seated?

What PSU are you using?

Hi andrew thansk for your reply.

I don't get this issue with my 34'' monitor but once plugging in the samsung g9 i get the errors and no boise screen.

Also when set this to pip split screen the bootup goes as normal.

I have found temp fix, when i press the power button several times on the samsung monitor the boise screen shows up and enters into windows also.
If i don't do this then i get the 1 long bleep and 3 fast beeps before i get the windows login screen.

Once in windows everything works fine.. gpu card stress testing all works perfect.

i do some very heavy 3d rendering and gpu works a dream

as for my psu it’s Corsair 1200 hxi I got my pc build from website so everything is about week old.

Not sure what to do.

I doubt this is an issue with the monitor, it sounds more like an issue with the BIOS settings, Graphics drivers (unlikely if this is happening on boot) or Graphics Card. The NVIDIA drivers for the new cards are known to be a bit unstable at the mo, make sure you are on the latest firmware for the card and have a play about with the BIOS settings to make they are configured correctly as per the manufacturer recommendations with the graphics card you have. Also look at my earlier post regarding updating the Firmware of the screen and make sure that is also on the latest firmware version.

I've had my G9 for about 5 days and so far I've had no issues at all, no noises, flashing, excessive light bleeding, screen peeling or anything else out the ordinary that you wouldn't expect it to do, apart from the dramas of updating the Firmware but that's sorted now. I've got one from the new batch that's just been released and honestly, I think people are missing a trick by either not exchanging the one's they have for one of the new batches or, not buying one right now if they are considering it.

The previous batch had to be recalled due to QC issues at the factory, not Samsung's fault but, their reputation has taken a battering because of it. Now, for that factory to keep their contract with Samsung, imagine the pressure on them from Samsung right now to ensure every single screen is absolutely perfect, and I have to say, they are. I inspected every single millimetre of my screen and I can't find a single thing wrong with it, everything is neat, well sealed, not a single dead pixel, no unexpected noises, minimum expected light bleed, it is as good as it can be. The current level of scrutiny and QC will right now will be as high as it ever will be for these screens, now is the time to buy and exchange.

Hi,

Yes GPU drivers are on their latest and on clean windows install.

BIOS is currently at the latest version also

Another temp fix that seems to be less hassle, when turning the computer on.. if i press the monitor power button on then the bios loads fine
and no beebs

As stated before it's as if the monitor takes some time to wake up from boot up and pressing button seems to do the trick.

Also have another person with the exact same monitor and board as me having this issue.. so maybe down to the motherboard, who knows.

But for now pressing the power button on the monitor that i can live with.

Thanks for all your help.

As for the monitor i have had 2 of them with dead pixels on the screen, amazon are sending out another one today so hopefully this is the one.

The one i have right now has 2 dead pixels near the centre screen, first one had row of dead pixels near the top left of the monitor.

Sounds like you've been receiving screens from the original batch, hopefully this time you'll get one from the new batch. The only other thing I can think of is to try using a different port on the monitor and change the input type from DVI or HDMI to the other and see if that makes a difference. If you can live with it though I don't suppose it matters, I always turn my screen off at the button anyway and always turn my computer on and let it boot before turning on my screen.

Yeah,

That's what i was thinking.

This is my 2nd monitor though, dealing with dead pixels so i am getting replacement for the 3rd monitor later today.

I will report back if the problemm does persist with the gpu error.

Somone did explain this to me on another forum.

''''
Basically, SOME new monitors send a return signal down Pin 20 of the display cable even when they're switched off just to show their presence and that the monitor is there. The board is set to EXPECT this signal which is incorrect and shouldn't be that way as there's a lot more monitors that don't send this return signal.

When it doesn't receive the signal until the monitor is powered on, the board thinks the monitor isn't connected and throws a GPU error.''''

Thank you all again who have helped me with this.

Update on my flickering and GSync issues. Tried my G9 with a new RTX 2060 instead of my 1080ti and happy to report that the gsync now is completely in sync with the fps of the game, no flicker with SDR material. With HDR a massive improvement in flicker though there is still a very small amount, not all the time even. So it looks like my 1080ti for whatever reason was the cause of the issue - or perhaps the drivers for it aren't receiving quite the care and attention of the newer cards. I'm going to keep the monitor now anyway and wait for my 3080 to arrive. Maybe now i can forget about the issues and just enjoy some gaming! Thanks to you all for your advice etc and i hope this bit of knowledge helps someone else.

I really want one of these or an LG 38GN950-B but I've never been so nervous about buying a panel as I am right now, it just seems like QA is none existent.
