New Star Trek series - 2017

I liked that first ep, like this crew more and more too, seems like a perfect bunch of characters going forwards. Also Discovery jumping will never get old although the best jumps of all time will remain Galactica and the Empire ships in Foundation for sheer visual coolness.

It feels like early days Next Generation, where the chip went exploring the galaxy finding news life and the adventures that followed them along the way whilst chucking in some trials and tribulations.

Anyone caught a glimpse of it through some evil pirates window yet? Is it as bad as I suspect it is? Does nothing happen apart from patting each other on backs for the first half? Does Tilly look like a beached whale? Toxic white male?

Yeah she actually looks fatter than ever. It's ridiculous and contradictory that there's a human that fat in the future.

The whole crew is either Black or LGBTQ+ and mostly women, not a single white straight male, it's ******* hilarious.

Yeah. That's the problem with the series. It's not the lousy writing and plotting. It's the lack of white straight males.

Oh, there is definitely some seriously shoddy writing.

Most of the acting is somewhat naff too, the guy playing Dr Culber seems relatively decent & the guy playing Saru does a really good job, a lot of the rest of the cast however seem to play things overly camp & it comes across really fake.

Sometimes I feel I'm watching an amateur dramatics panto.

Exactly this LOL, my earlier comment is about they made damn sure that everyone is either gay, black, or a woman but forgot about everything else, it's a damn shame that good money on great special effects are so wasted on this bunch of talentless hacks when the money spent on 1 episode of this trash could get us the remastered DS9 on Blu-ray.

I almost switched off halfway through, but it ended quite well. The switching back and forth between three different stories did my head in a bit.

Missed opportunity showing the new upcoming startship....if they are restarting the exploration of the federation, what better way than a new Enterprise :p

Its a pretty strong indication that they might be more concerned with their "progressive" agenda than writing a good show no?

Remind me, how many white straight male characters were in, say, the DS9 command crew for much of the series?

A black commander/captain. An alien woman first officer in love with someone from another species. An alien security officer in love with her. An alien woman science officer in love with someone from another species. An alien tactical officer in love with her. An ethnically ambiguous medical officer (played by a Sudanese-born actor, character with an Indian surname).

Oh, and an Irish bloke as the engineer. I'll give you him, though even he had his less-than-straight moments with the medical officer...

The show being crap is nothing to do with the lack of white straight males on the bridge. The show is crap because the writing is crap.

I’m not suggesting it is the reason for it being crap. Star Trek has always been very progressive and supposed to be a vision of our “best” future.

In the current climate, have a large number of niche groups as the lead characters is 100% an indication that the show places more focus on these traits than the shows storytelling. Pointing at historical shows doesn’t change that.

The reason it’s crap is because the writing is crap, the characters are crap and the story is weak. That doesn’t mean their focus on ticking all the current “boxes” isn’t an indication that this was likely to be the case.

Is it even worth contaminating my ssd and downloading this?

The previous series was a time filler for me. Something watchable rather than something I wanted to watch.

I liked the earlier series. It just seems too.. I dunno. Naf

Not even sure if it's worth "acquiring" this series. Seems like netflix thought the same.

I think the only way to watch this now is to skip the large chunks of filler and bits where they cry and say how great they are, also the swear too. You are then left with about 5 mins of storyline which is almost palatable but still makes you gag somewhat.

You mean just the special effects :D

It's quite telling I know all the names of the characters from the other Star Trek series but I haven't a clue about the ones in discovery. I know Michael and Tilly that's about it.....oh saru. That's three, although I couldn't give a monkeys about any of them.

We're on season 4 ffs. In any other of the series we'd have formed a bond with the crew by now.

Can you name any of the standout episodes?

Datalore
Yesterday's Enterprise
Best of both worlds

Ds9 way of the warrior

Voyager had futures end by season 4 which I thought was great

Wasn't that just the 'current' century's voyager being refit?
